Apps for 'talking' map/directions?

Hi
I would like an app for either my Samsung Galaxy Exhibit or Ipad that 'talks' as you follow directions.
I am uncomfortable driving and having to look at the map.
Seems my phone used to talk, but if I have used my 2GB, I slow down to 2G speed, which is not fast enough I think to 'talk'.
Free would be very nice...

To each his own view, but I think smartphones make poor GPS devices for regular use. They're great in a pinch when you wanted to bring your GPS device but forgot it or when you thought you didn't need it but you get lost. On droid phones, Google maps seems to be viewed as the best performing tool and it's free.

Amazon has several models of both Garmin and TomTom GPS devices for under $100. I think using a purpose-built device is the best approach.

I couldn't agree more. I am new to a smart phone and my phone came with 3 GPS type things loaded on it that I have no clue about but the phone company won't let you remove them. I was just on a 6hr trip and I can't imagine if I used my phone how much data it would suck up as I don't have unlimited data on my phone. I much prefer a hand held garmen I mount on the winshield.

I had a basic one for the longest time that got me from point A to B and last summer I had to drive my son from NY to Maryland by myself so went and bought a better one for $200 and boy I can't live without it now. I especially love the lane assist and how I can search where the nearest gas station or fast food place is.

I just got a new car and I made sure to get the GPS built in and I absolutely love it and have already used it on a few long trips and it also has the lane assist and search functions. When our van dies the next car my husband gets I am going to insit he get it built in also. Mary

Thanks Caroline I brought my iPod over to the laptop so I can add some non-games that I use. Utilities Apzilla 2 has all sorts of different utilities, most of them are worthwhile. Some you might never use. Even though Apzilla has it I also have MyLite (a flashlight) and a Free Level program. (a level for hanging pictures straight)and Free Space, a program that tells you how much room is left on your iPod and battery info. Capacity is another program that does this. Free Wi-Fi tells you when you travel where there is free wi-fi you can log into. 5-0 Radio Pro is a fun Police and Fire scanner so you can listen for any calls that come out in your city or even places in your country. My hearing isn't the best and sometimes the talking isn't too clear for me but it is fun listening to the information. It can run in the background. Shopwise is a program that tells you certain deals. I have World Atlas and Google Earth. Book Crawler is a program that lets you keep track of all of your books. iPlant is a gardening book that is quite good. For notes I use Awesome Notes. MyStuff2 is a neat inventory program I haven't used yet. I use IOwn and Iconic Notes, but I don't think either of those are available now. Someday I will transfer everything over. Ian's Laces as Caroline mentioned is fun but there also is a program called Tie a Scarf for women' scarves. Holiday List is also a great Christmas gift planner. AppSniper and AppShopper are two programs I use occasionally. They tell you the new programs that are out. A lot of programs are free for a short time before they start to charge and these programs as well as others will let you know this. I have a lot of medical programs and photography programs as well but this thread is getting long.

Have you though about contacting your local County Agricultural agent? I now there are systems available to give precise measurement of a field as the big farmers use it for plowing, planting and harvesting. My guess is that you are looking for more precision and accuracy than is needed for the job you are trying to do. Yes when you plant a tree, you are talking of about a 2' circle. However the tree at maturity will require a circle about 30 feet in diameter, and a bush depending on what it is, 4' to 10'. Because of this you only need cover your yard with grid with 10' squares and locate each tree and bush with in that grid. If you plant a Maple and a rose bush in the same grid, it will be easy to tell the rose bush from the maple. You could increase the accuracy of the location, by designating the southwest quarter of grid box 10. This would be similar to the Township/Section system surveyors uses to designate property. If you are not familiar with the method of surveying, there are many documents describing the system, as it was codified in the 1780's, and all property in US deeds today are still described by the same system.

hahaha mushcreek. I can relate as I used to do paper sculpture. I suppose I could do a scaled model of my house. Hmm, maybe I should? Nah! Lindsy, I did use my computer program (photoshop) to sketch up what I wanted at first. I didn't work with an architect which is probably why it took me so long. I worked with a draftsman. Big Mistake! If I had it to do over, I would have brought my ideas to an architect. This is the very first sketch I brought the draftsman. Notice I didn't really concern myself with actual sizes etc but only with an overall general feel of which rooms I wanted where. For example, I knew the garage had to be where it was and I was required to have the front door on the other street (it's a corner lot). I also knew I wanted a "courtyard feel to my back yard and I wanted my kitchen near my garage. I also knew I wanted the master, DH's study (labeled den) and the great room to open to the yard. The problem was as some here alluded to, was that he then got stuck on the idea of the stairway where I had it, etc. He couldn't visualize anything on his own. I have a design background, so wound up designing it completely by myself WITH the help of the folks and especially with the help of the architects on this forum. And this is what we wound up with:

I always give directions using street names, and that's how I navigate as well. I hate it when someone gives me directions using landmarks, as those landmarks are rather meaningless to me, and I usually do not spot them. I've read that women tend to give directions using landmarks and that men give directions using street names and NSEW, which is what I do, but that is probably an over-generalization. I remember asking a woman whether a certain business was north or south of Saticoy Street in the Van Nuys (it was only a few blocks away), and she gave me the exact opposite direction of where it really was, but she admitted not knowing north from south. We were in the Valley, however, and so that explains a lot. In Costa Rica we had trouble finding our last B&B because it was outside of town, and there were no street signs in the town, and so I went to a bar to ask directions. No one knew of the place where I wanted to go, and so I called the hotel to have the owner talk to the bartender, thinking they could figure out how to get from the bar to the hotel, but as it turned out, the hotel owner was Swiss, and his Spanish was not that good, and so they did not communicate that well. I could communicate with the hotel owner in German and the bartender in Spanish, but I could not get any kind of directions coordinated between them. They kept saying things like, turn left or right at the drug store, but there were drug stores on every other corner in that part of town. We drove all over town before we ever found our way to that B&B. The car had GPS, but the hotel's address was off the GPS grid, and GPS sent us to the wrong address. My best friend in Mexico City would hire taxis to lead her to places that she could not find when she was driving. She would pay them to go where she wanted to go, and then she would drive behind them.

I have Yelp on my phone. If I search for a place (restaurant, shopping), then I click on 'Directions' it will start the GPS with voice. I use it all the time and its free. Just download YELP.

I think it would be fine for short trips but longer ones would use a ton of data. I have unlumited internet on my phone but still prefer garmin as I like to see the map and the lane assist when it comes up. I see they are making a 7 inch garmin now. My friend is thinking of ordering it. Mary

I have used both system types with near-like success. However, if I was traveling, out in rural areas, or if exactness and time savings are crucial I would use the TomTom/Garmin system.

Thanks for the input. I am also limoted to 2.5 of data on my phone. I used that in about 10 days.

Yeah I normally get 500mb before they slow me down but this month I was going to be traveling a bit so upped it to unlimited just for this month but normally I don't even use all the 500mb. It might be cost effective to invest in a window mounted unit if you are going to need it a lot.

My husband bought me a new car for our 24th anniversary a few months ago and now I am spoiled having it built in with a nice big screen. That and the heated seats for winter. I don't know how I went all these years without those luxury's, he he. Mary
