PC making a lot of noise tonite?

I have an HP PC...seems to be making more than the usual whirring noise that it usually makes...like when I leave a CD in. I know that I probably need to do a cleaning but could that be all that is causing that. I checked and there is no CD in it.

I'd get a can of air and blast all the dust away from the fans. I'm sure other with more experience than I do will chime in to help.

Sorry Casi I am a little in the dark here. Is it the system internally that is making the noise or the drive? I am guessing it is the system, but I want to be sure.

Regardless, do your intended cleaning and then proceed if necessary. There are several possibilities as to the unwanted noise, but starting with the simplest task first I think would be direction to go.

Hello again nice people, I have a question. Since Zep has led me through so many steps and has helped me clean up some of the junk on my computer my question is this. What will the results be if I can find no way to get Java downloaded? Is it absolutely necessary that Java be on the computer for things to work right. I see no results from NOT having it, other than not being to play some games, I play most any game I want without any trouble, most of them very graphic. I still need to delete the Firefox Beta version and keep the right version, but I've got to straightened out the shortcut Icons on my desktop, they're both intertwined. Other than that I don't seem to be having any problems. I don't know if there is something else on the Hijack list that needs to be addressed, Zep didn't say so I assume that there is not. I did get the problem with Incredimail straightened out. That also was a register error. After today I am headed for hopefully a wonderful trip to Yellowstone National Park. I will check on this thread as soon as I get back to see what you think about leaving well enough alone. Thanks again for your time and sharing your knowledge.

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.

Hi, Audrey - I have a PC8500. Make sure the needle is not too large (I usually use an 11 for embroidery). Also, take it all apart in the bobbin area and clean it, and take the cover off the left side where the thread tension is and clean there - even tiny little bits of thread or fuzz can mess it up. I also tend to have trouble with designs where part stitches on top of something already stitched. It makes a lot of noise and tends to break the thread when it's punching through the first embroidery. Usually fine thread and a fine needle help. Also, make sure you don't have your design "over-stabilized". I was doing some free standing lace ornament covers and using the 2 layers of WSS they recommended in the instructions, and discovered that one layer is plenty and the machine didn't have to work nearly so hard.

I rent an apartment that is heated/air conditioned by a Mitsubishi wall mounted unit with two pumps installed on the outside wall of my bedroom. Last year, I didn't seem to recall having any problems, but since winter set in, this year, there have been periods of excessive humming noise and vibration so that I could not sleep. Then a couple of weeks ago, during a snowstorm, water came through the ceiling unit in my living room. It ceased rather quickly once I shut down the unit. Interestingly enough, the outside noise and vibration seemed to have quietened down until a week or so ago. My landlord checked and confirmed that he heard the noise outside my window, and called a service technician, who came today. Low and behold, nice and quiet, no issues. I told him it was intermittent, but the company doesn't really deal with Mitsubishi so the representative couldn't offer an explanation, just suggested to tape record it when the noise happens again. I am not crazy or oversensitive. As a matter of fact, I have severe hearing impairment in one ear and cannot hear the alarm go off if I am lying on that side. Yet, for nights and days and weeks, the noise and vibration was so intense I couldn't sleep or concentrate on any activity. Has anyone else had this problem?

Also try putting a CD in the drawer to see if noise levels change at all.

Newer computers do not seem to have activity lights anymore sadly. If you does have 2 LED lights one should be constant (the power light) the other should flicker, this is the hard drive activity light. Does this flickering coincide with the noises? If this is a laptop there may be an additional light when charging the battery.

Desktop or laptop? If a desktop has it been moved or banged recently?

Without hearing your computer, it is very difficult to pin down your specific problem. You are in the best position to locate the source of the noise. However, I can make a good guess by your description. My guess is is a fan with a dry bearing. Possible locations of fans:
1. on the processor
2. in the power supply
3. Cabinet intake fan
3. Cabinet exhaust fan.

In a pinch, I have sucessfully relubbed these fans to get a few more hours out of them and give me time to get replacements. However, if you are not comfortable with prying up labels and re-applying these.,best to not bother with lubrication and simply replace the fan.

If it is the processor fan, replace it right away.

If the noise is coming from a hard drive (and it did make this noise before) shut down and get another drive right away. Increased noise from a hard drive most often signals a failure is developing. Do not confuse the noise from a spinning disk with the noise a read/write head makes when it is hard at work jumping from track to track.
