change the look of the files in documents, etc?

skimmed thru my dummies book for W7, didn't really see anything that might just let me put my file folders like they used to be in XP, In other words, flat, as opposed to laying on their sides and spilling out. Does this bother anyone else besides me? I find it upsetting, cuz I used to put a picture on the folder of what was perhaps inside, and now can't do that, nor can I get used to seeing the files looking like they are spilling out of the folder.
Anyone got a clue on how to remedy this, or do I grit my teeth and go with it?

You would like your folders to look like the top half of that picture instead of like those in the bottom half. Is that right?

Actually you can flip back and forth between the two layouts as often as you please. Notice on the pale blue header it says Organise - Share with - and over to New folder? Continue looking to the right along that line and you see a small square with a tiny down arrow. Click that down arrow to change your view to however you want the page. Play with various settings so you can see what is available. I sometimes use the 'Extra large icons' to locate pics then change back to my usual view of 'Details'.

Owbist, have checked your info, and found the icons, etc., but what I was hoping for was the old time folders XP type icons, to contain the files, the tan colored part of the folder is just flat like a piece of paper. I don't think that can be changed, but what you have showed me are other options that I probably will have to learn to use. Not that I like them, mind you, just that I will have to use them. Terrible how we get so wrapped up in what we like, and hard to get into new mode.

Thanks Mikie. I have Dell560 Desktop/IE10/ Win7. I can't find what you suggested. Sorry I'm so computer dumb. The only "Computer" is on the left above the "Start" icon on my desktop. Clicking it will tell me how much space is used on "C" and that I have a "D" drive installed. I'm unsure where the run line might be. The only browser address bar I know of is either on the Internet or my email site. I don't have a Folder Options in my Control Panel icons and, therefore, no View Tab. Back on XP Windows Explorer would give me everything. Now it's just icons saying Libraries, Documents, Etc. Thanks, Gene

Ok. I guessed wrong on IE. I should have noticed that the directory name was slightly different. I just tried it using Chorme and the directory is a web page saved in Chrome, not IE. Chrome saves the files in snopes.com Microsoft AOL Giveaway.htm_files IE saves them in C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Green\My Documents\snopes_com Microsoft-AOL Giveaway_files If you didn't save the web page, somebody else did. What's the date/time stamp on it? Maybe it was long enough ago that you forgot doing it.

Hi, fruitjar...I never get that far because after I click the down arrow on the attachment to download it takes me directly to Word to save it as a document instead of displaying it on the screen so I can do a Ctrl P. :) azinoh - FF has worked fine for years for this task (I'll look again at their settings) but I may need to use Adobe Reader as you suggest. I'm trying to avoid the extra steps of saving it somewhere else before I print. See above note to fruitjar re: Word...I was thinking there may be a setting I could change there to have the choice to print rather than to save it to the hard drive first.

Another 2 cent contribution: The overall looks of the Tutorial appears to me to have the margins equal, rather than all of the text justified. If all of the lines of text were center-justified both the left and right sides of the page would have jagged edges since all of the words on a line have a different combined number of letters. A simple example: The word two is of course 3 letters whereas the word three has 5. If each of these was on a different line and center-justified, both sides would be jagged so long as the margins were equal. But in order to get nearly every line of equal length, you would have to resort to hyphenating some words at the end of a line that did not exactly match the margins that have been set -- as is done with some newspaper editing. Not all of their lines are exact but come within reason, choosing to hyphenate only the longer words. The Tutorial example "Adding Flush Space" is an illustration of the process used by the newspapers.

Shaddy, I installed something called Classic Shell on my Windows 7 computer that gives the start menu and other things the older, classic look. I don't remember if it changes the look of folders, however, but you might want to take a look at it and even install it. If you don't like, you can always uninstall.

My husband hates, hates the folders on Win 7. The only thing he has in folders are pictures, and he likes the old flat type you describe. He hates the folders view so much he refuses to use the laptop....which is fine with me.
