When is an uninstall not an uninstall?

Yesterday I did several updates on my Vista box (1 for MSE thru Windows Update, new versions of Firefox & Thunderbird). I thought everything went okay, but there was clearly a problem when I booted Vista today. It looked like it was starting in safe mode when it wasn't. To make a long story short, the system restore was successful but I am hesitant to download that MSE update again.

After I got Vista sorted out, I found that Malwarebytes-Firefox-Thunderbird all failed to launch. It was necessary to download MB and also uninstall FF-TB and download those also. When I started the new install of FF I fully expected all my bookmarks to be gone...but they were still there. When I started the new install of TB I expected to have to completely re-do my account settings for mail & news...but I didn't need to....and all my old mail was still there.

Not that I'm complaining but...why wasn't it all lost?

BTW, today I was very happy to have my seldom used and completely uncorrupted Opera browser ready to take up the slack when Firefox was inoperable.

IE9 is my browser of choice.. I need activeX for some network servers & IE9 surely loads in a blink.

Firefox upgrade, about 6mb, v11 to 12 failed here ... failed but graciously offered a full download. Uninstalled the FireFox11 manually in control panel before installing new Firefox12. Seemed fine. It offers remove personal settings or not.. I always do remove personal ... because I seldom use it

MS Security essentials upgraded the beta 4 version without a hitch here thru microsoft automatic updates.

It was like a wake up call to uninstall reinstall IE9 along with flash & java's... when I suddenly had errors .. page not responding ... and this is a new laptop, maybe 10 days old.
Came with one error in the admin error log... i fixed that easy, a win7sp1 known error. Something that upgraded very recent hurt IE9 somehow.

It is my experience during an uninstall in FF if you give permission to remove personal settings you will remove bookmarks and add-ons as well. In other words a fresh start. If you deny the request all this information will be retained for the install.

The upgrade through the FF channel is about 7.1 MB while a full download of v12 is over 15 MB.

Revo uninstaller is sort of a combined way to uninstall programs and clean up the registry for that programs left overs and some of the left over files/folders it might leave. It's not always 100% effective but its better than windows uninstall - which is really just running the programmers uninstaller. You can try to use revo... I always run it on its most aggressive scan. . To me it sounds like you might need to reinstall AVG 12 the older version..... disable it.... uninstall it maybe with Revo first... then follow up with the AVG uninstall tool .. most want you to run that tool from safe mode. I use revo all the time on other peoples computers as well as mine. With the advanced mode ticked almost always unless its one of the program having common ties to other programs like maybe an adobe reader unistall would with other adobe products. Only maybe twice in gosh.. maybe over 100 uses it caused a problem. That kind of problem mostly would be registry and easily fixed it you have a recent restore point to use. Hunter mode is for items that don't have an uninstaller .. I've only had to use the Hunter mode on the magic little virus's that are in doc/ user download folders and some magic little unknown icon in the system tray by clock. But even in the advanced mode you're likely to find left overs in doc/user/applications and maybe in the /program files/ folder. And also in the registry hklm hku software tree. Gotta admint,,, I dont worry much about problems. Most every problem has a fix.

Malwarebytes is supposed to not like it. Probably will remove it from starting. Do a Full Scan ? Quick websearch says it does plugins in browsers so look at those and disable it or remove if and when you find it. Look for the uninstaller C:\Program Files\Wajam\uninstall.exe or (x86) !!!! I dunno, I'd try this again and follow it to the letter. Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool: - Double click the MCPR.exe - A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. - Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear. - After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup. - Observe the installation, which could take several minutes.
