Blocking unwanted emails

I'm getting hundreds of unwanted and porn emails at one time and have tried deleting them, but they keep coming back. How can I block these emails?

You fail to say whether this is your email account provided by the internet provider or a throw away space based account.

If you have your account set to preview emails then change it so only he headers are on show. That way the email is not opened and you simply highlight and delete.

For you to know it is porn perhaps you are opening them? NEVER open anything from anyone you do not know, opening it often sends back a message that they have reached a valid address. Hence the large volume of unwanted mail

If this is a space based throw away account then create a new account, notify your contacts and abandon the old accont which will die after a given time frame.

You should have at least 1 or 2 "junk" email accounts to use for anything that you do not want to clutter up your primary email with. Yahoo-GMail-Hotmail are all good for this purpose. Avoid giving out your primary email to all but your most important and trusted contacts.

Andy, I think there are a few email services that operate the way I believe you'd like. Bluebottle.com is one. PrivacyHarbor.com is another. The latter has something they call "SnapGuard." When someone signs up for the service (which has free and premium options), ALL new main will end up in SnapGuard. The user chooses whether to accept or discard the individual emails or, thirdly, to mark them as Spam. Once you accept an email (address), that person's emails go directly into your inbox from then on. If you discard it, the individual email is discarded, but the next email from that person will again end up in SnapGuard until it (the person's email address) is either Accepted or marked as Spam. Once a message is marked Spam, that sender's emails are automatically sent to the spam folder and marked as 'read' so you will never be bothered with them again. And from Bluebottle's site: Bluebottle Spam-Free Email is easy to use. When Bluebottle receives a message from an email address or domain not on your "Allowed" list, it emails the sender a "verification request". This asks the sender to verify themselves by clicking on a link. Once verified, the system automatically adds the sender's email address to your "Allowed" list and the message is sent through. Future messages are automatically let through until you remove the senders email address from your "Allowed" list. These two services -- and there are surely others -- work by being suspicious of everyone's emails coming to you and only allowing through to your inbox the ones you specifically designate as safe. :-)

It is indeed unfortunate when a user's e-mail address is hijacked. Fortunately it doesn't happen too often. I agree with Owbist's thinking that you are being spammed by an e-mail generator. To be on the safe side, if this just recently started I would recommend that you do a full scan with all your security applications to insure that you haven't contracted a bug of some type. Be sure all your definitions are current. If you do verify that it has been hijacked pretty much all you can do is create a new e-mail account and notify only those of necessity. DA

WOT does give a not-to-be-taken lightly warning: Maybe it's because of the type of software involved? Maybe the warnings were written by frustrated teens? Maybe it really is malware? I admit, I entertained the idea of spammer too. Clicked your name blackhorse to see when you joined. Got no info. Clicked your (My Page). Got no info. Assumed I must have been correct and your account had already been deleted. Sorry about that. Either something is up with gardenweb or... you'd maybe better not let that gardenweb cookie expire. Edit: Hehe, you beat me shaxhome. but I'll still make my post. :) Truthfully though: "Remember nothing replaces good of fashioned common sense and parental monitoring." is the key. Software would not have stopped me when I was a teen(or near teen), if there had been personal computers back then that is.

I use Outlook Express, and was wondering what kind of a message, if any, does a sender get when I have put their email address on the "Blocked Sender" list? If you would like to do a test, you could block me, and I could try emailing you and then post here if I get an email from the 'postmaster' or whatever saying my email was undeliverable. Just post here, or drop me an email, if you would like for me to do a test with you. I would then email you privately, and not via GW as sometimes GW email is not reliable. I'd post here once I had emailed you, and also post if/when I got an email saying it was undeliverable....or not LMK...Sue

First off don't just delete them instead with out opening them send them to the junk mail folder that is how your email program learns what you think is junk, by simply deleting them it is not teaching that this is to be considered junk mail.
Definitely if you have your email set so you have a preview pane visible you need to change that, in the settings, it is dangerous to use this.
Do you get and send emails with lists of people's email addresses showing? If so you just answered why you get tons of spam mail. Each of those emails with all those addresses get harvested by the spanner, and they know it is an active email address, so they sell it to other spammers.

What email are you using? Hotmail? Yahoo Other?

If using Hotmail, it has a nice "Sweep feature that both deletes spam emails without opening them and also blocks them.
