Blue Screen every 10 to 15 minutes

Hello,

I've been all over the web looking for some type of solution.
Then late last night I remembered Garden Web's Computer Help section and knew I'd find an answer here or be giving links where to turn.

I don't have a backup computer to use nor do I have the funds for a new computer so I am hoping I don't end up without a computer soon....thus, I'm here, hoping to get some help.

HP Pavilion a1710
Windows Vista Home Premium
Running Explorer 9 and Firefox
Running off son's router in another room - Verizon Fios

Almost two weeks ago I got a message that stated I needed to backup my computer.
I clicked 'Yes' and got a message that backup would go to D Recovery Disk.

About 10 minutes (maybe less) I received a message that I was almost out of memory.

I know that my C disk has almost 75% memory left on it so I checked my D.
It showed a red line all the way across the bar.
I decided I best not do a backup and changed the settings so that I wouldn't be backing up anything on D.

I shut down computer, restarted, thought everything was fine. It wasn't. That's when I started getting the Blue Screen.
The Blue Screen doesn't last long enough for me to read anything.

Decided maybe the computer needed a good cleaning, inside and out.
Defrag, cleared cache, removed unnecessary files, removed over 1500 photos (I don't put music on my computer so that wasn't a space-taker) and ran two virus/malware full scans: AVG (my permanent anti-virus) and a MalwareBytes x2 (after updating MalwareBytes).
Both came up negative for anything at all.
I tried to do a Restore but that's when I found there are no restore dates!

It just seems to me, something happened when I thought I was doing a good thing by backing up my files on the D Recovery that was suggested.
Last time I ever do that!

Then I took cover off the tower and cleaned inside, blew the dust, made sure everything was running smooth/quiet as it always has, etc.

I've looked everywhere online for a troubleshooting guide for this problem but the closest I come is to tweak the Regedit and I'm not about to go playing around in here.

Now that I look for my D Recovery under 'computer', it no longer shows up in my 'Computer' area.

Please, does anyone have any help, opinions, suggestions to help me with this problem?
I don't want to be computerless. :(

You should never write anything to your recovery partition. Normally this is created just big enough to hold the original files in case you need to return the computer to factory defaults.

You said the hard drive was 75% filled (this is not memory) but was that before you did the clean up or afterwards?

Click Start
click My computer (or just Computer, not sure with Vista)
You should now see the C and D drives listed
Right click on C then click Properties at the bottom of the new window and you you see a pie chart showing you how much of the drive is used and how much free or empty. You need a minimum of 25% free space for the volatile swap file to work efficiently. What do you have?

Do you see your D drive listed there too. Asking as you noted it had disappeared.

At any time after buying the computer did you buy or create a set of recovery disks?

What happens once the blue screen vanishes? Does the computer freeze or continue to boot normally?

You are correct, it is not adviseable to play with Regedit, it courts disaster.

When you removed the side panel and blew out the dust bunnies you said you checked 'everything was running smooth/quiet'. Did you think to check that the fan on the processor was working correctly? This is the fan on the motherboard sitting on aluminum fins (the heatsink). I ask in case it is failing and causing the blue screen but if it was then the computer would shut down at that point.

'Nuff to start on, let us know the answers....................

Oh owbist,
Thank you soooo very much for responding so quickly!

This computer is all original....exactly as it came from Amazon about 6 years ago.

I have done some Windows Updates.
In fact, a few days before I started having the problems I had done an update. Not for optional but for all the security things.
I didn't think my problems had anything to do with the update as the problems didn't start until a few days later.

Yes, I checked the fan, heat sink, other fan....all were running as they always have.
I shut everything down, got my handy-dandy wrist/shock thing and blew everything out then using a paint brush with soft bristles I removed dust that didn't come out with the blowing.
Everything came back on fine, no loud noises, fan reacted as it always has.

I have never saved or put anything in D Recovery as I know that it contains the information I need in case my computer should go down and I need to start all over with the factory defaults.
I have no idea why all of a sudden I'm told D is short of memory as I've never even bothered with the D.
I know my limitations and messing with something I know nothing about is not going to happen in my lifetime as far as computers go. :)

The last few times with Blue Screen, the computer screen goes dark, looks as if computer shuts down but instead a Chkdsk program starts. I allow that to run. When it's done, the computer will shut down and start back up with the message in the right corner telling me I am short of D memory.

After my first post here, I looked again at the Restore. The date was for April 17, 2013.
I believe that was a day my AVG updated.
I ran the Restore and got my D back.

Here are the numbers I just got from 'Computer':

The dealer wants me to bring it in to their service department but he won't do anything extra to help. I've talked to a couple of dealers and several are suggesting that I do need a new transaxle and the problem is caused by the transaxle fluid thinning once warm. One dealer suggested I try the JD transaxle fluid that isn't low viscosity. I paid $1,200 for the GT235, I hadn't done any real research so I didn't know what a GT235 should be. My Dad bought a used tractor from the same dealer 4 years ago and his hasn't had any problems. Anyone had any experience replacing a transaxle? Is it worth it? The dealer said a new transaxle would be $1,700. Can I get one for less somewhere else?

Some other factors to consider when thinking about hedges would include how much or little water you want to provide, whether it also has to be deer resistant, whether you are dealing with full sun or shade, and are you high enough up in Kensington that you need to worry about freeze tolerance? It can be significantly colder at the highest parts of Kensington that it isn't quite a Sunset zone 16 in a bad winter, with lows down to 20F a real possibility. I work on lots of gardens in the Berkeley/Oakland/Kensington hills areas, and it may be most useful to see what is working well in your neighborhood, and what appeals to you. You may also need to factor in that neighbors may get riled up if you block their distant views, just as you would if someone blocked your views. It may pay to take a more measured approach to creating privacy without planting a future monster. Personally I find many reasons to consider using clumping bamboos for hedging purposes; with the main reason being they don't need pruning to control size if you select the appropriate species for the height desired, they tend to stay narrow yet can grow tall, and pruning is easier when it simply involved removing old culms rather than ladders and pole saws. On the other hand, most bamboo species prefer a good amount of summer irrigation and are constantly shedding leaves and culm sheaths. The Sunset Western Garden Book Encyclopedia has a good section on screening shrubs, listing the various pros and cons. I would also seriously consider that the fastest growing hedges also tend to be the ones that require the most pruning to control size.

Sump Pump running every 3 minutes

Brickeyee, You are correct. I had hose disconnected during the winter. I connected the hose again and now the sump pump runs every 5 to 10 minutes. I also had city come in and inspect the water in my sump pump pit. They tested for chemicals to determine if there was a water leak. It turns out the there is no water leak. When they looked at the city plans to noticed that my house is in an area that had wet lands. So we have clay soil and high water table. These two issues are causing sump pump to run often. I had several water proofing guys come in to see my basement. They all told me that my basement is dry, no water seepage or humidity. They told me that my landscaping is fine too. All of them recommeded a backup sump pump. One of them recommeded replacing my current pump and getting another sump pump pit. My current plan is to keep my current sump pump as it has been working well for 5 years now. I will add another sump pump in the same pit and keep it unplugged. I will also add a water based backup sump pump that runs off the city water. This pump does not go into the sump pump pit. I already have an alarm in the sump pump pit that alerts my security company if the water rises beyond a certain level. Let me know if you have any other suggestions. Thanks

Thanks for asking, Moonie. I think about it a lot, but I don't see myself doing anything about it until next spring at the earliest. I think I mentioned on the KT that I was going to wait until I got my cataract surgery over with, and that hasn't even been scheduled yet (and won't be, as long as I'm being treated for Lyme). Then last month my finances took a big hit from several sides, and the last thing I need is vet bills right now. But another factor is the challenges that winter brings. I'm going to have to figure out how to deal with this issue before I get another dog. My dirt road (and much of the property) is always icy in winter, and after injuring my knee a couple of years ago I am no longer willing to fall every winter. So I can't do any dog walking. Over the years I've had dogs we could let out by themselves, but some of my neighbors up the road ruined that idea when they started letting their large, aggressive dogs run free. My property is their favorite toilet, apparently, and they once attacked Wolfy in my back yard, giving him a serious wound in the throat. I have 31 acres here, but I feel as though I don't dare let a dog out by himself. When I had Angel and Wolfy I dealt with this by letting them out the back door in winter on a 25' horse lunge line, with me keeping watch. I suppose I would do this again. But this winter, with my Raynaud's Syndrome as bad as it is, I'll be somewhat relieved not to have to repeatedly open an outside door and unhook cold metal leash fasteners. Life is complicated. :-/ Glad to read the good advice and support you've received on this thread. PS: As long as I'm here, did you see my mention that I was surprised this week by a childhood friend popping in to visit me at work? Her maiden name was Clark.

Lots of free hard drive space so no worries there.

Go here and scroll down to "How to view Event logs" and follow along. The red error messages are the ones we are interested in.

Also from the link above look below and see how to interpret the findings

Owbist,
I had a wee bit of a problem because I don't think the instructions to get to the Event stuff is made for Vista but I did find the general area (I think?)

Just to make sure I'm in the correct area, I took screen caps of the pages I was on and put them in a PhotoBucket album.
I know I'm asking a lot, but could you please look at the album and make sure I'm where I'm supposed to be?

Hmm, sorry amity I gave you instructions forgetting it was Vista. But you arrived so that is good.

The first photo is the page of interest, however there you have gone back 16 days and likely before your problems arose. You noted there were red errors and I assume these were near the top of the page. did you find any that gave you an indication of a problem? Any repeated fairly often?

Dearest Owbist,

I'm here!!! I'm just having a heck of a time staying online to get things to post, to read mail, to do anything.
What I'm having to do is read mail, shut down computer. Fill out an application, shut down computer. Check for insurance update, shut down computer.
All this just to keep from having the blue screen pop up and shut everything down.
If this posts, please know I am still trying to get through the red x's.
Soon as I figure anything out, I'll be back, hopefully with more pics in the album to show you what I have.
Don't think I've asked for help and then jumped ship!

Start up in... 'Safe mode with networking'
by tapping the F8 key when starting the computer until you reach the optional start menu.

Then you can browse your email or here - most likely.

WhoCrashed .. freeware, small, simple .. might tell you reason for the blue screens.
