Hi, RC,

I have just finished looking over the WOT you recommended. It sounds wonderful, and apparently will even work on my Mac! If I ever get my poor, sick PC home from the hospital I will definitely be adding that. I assume it is compatable with all the other anti-malware you recommend--MWB, Spywareblaster, AVG. What about Avast, which is on my husband's PC?

Only one antivirus program per computer, which includes, Avast, AVG, Norton, Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee.etc.and you must ensure that all remanants of any previous AV program are completely uninstalled before installing any new one ..Malware programs which include, MWB, SuperAntispyware you can have as many as you want..

You can now run ubuntu right in windows with the use of wubi so you can run it as if it were a program in windows. However the particular distro you are asking me about in that link is NOT ubuntu per say, it is a distro that someone has created using ubunutu core, they have altered it to their linking and added some additional programs and removed some of the original ones. I know nothing of that particular distro at all never even heard of it so not sure how long lived it will be and be supported. Now to the real ubuntu it is widely used and many like it. I have used it in the past it is not my fave distro of linux. I personally use Mepis Linux to me it is one of the easiest to get set up and running and for people used to windows since it uses the KDE desktop manager rather than Gnome like ubuntu, however you can get Kubuntu which is ubuntu using the KDE desktop instead of the Gnome. I know that is sounding like a bunch of strange talk but it does make a difference. If you wanted to try ubuntu I would highly suggest this book it is the one that got me started and it is an excellent resource especially for ubuntu. Ubuntu for Non-Geeks I think his latest edition is 4, you would definitely want which ever is the latest one. I picked mine up at Barnes and Noble locally. The thing with ubuntu is they update the versions frequently so it is likely that what ever the book is for will not be the latest version of ubuntu. To understand that you can look at this wiki to see the various versions of ubuntu List of Ubuntu releases What I personally would suggest is that you get yourself a linux live cd what ever you prefer in distro, and simply just put in the cd and boot your pc from that cd and it will allow you to run linux strictly from that cd and never touch your windows at all, that way you can test drive it and see what you think then when you are wanting to go back to windows just remove the cd and reboot the pc back as normal to windows. That is the preferred way to do any banking these days because what ever you do while using the live cd is not saved to the hard drive and is much like working in a safe box. Hi albert, Thank-you for the compliment. I have learned from experience. Here are 2 more things to think about; My son decided that he was going to sign up on-line for free groceries. He used my phone #. Well, after clicking whatever looked interesting to him in the ads that led him to the initial regeristering for the free groceries, they had sent payment requests as 3rd party billings to Verizon. I learned fast about 3rd party blocks. And, several years ago, maybe 15, I had recieved my phone bill. It had a charge on there for the amount of over $800. I called the phone company, and they told me that I was responsible, because someone had used the phone from my house to call some Entertainment Hotline! The call was placed at 04:30!!? No one at this time would have been awake at my house. All the teenagers were elsewhere at the time,also. I had them redirect the bill back to where it came from, to get it off my bill, which they did. I never did recieve the bill from whoever it was returned to. But, a few months later, I found out from the TV Program 20/20 that people were capable of obtaining your home phone through a dial-up system on their computer that would dial your number at random, connect when you answered, and copy the number to be used at a later time for their personal enjoyment. you can also go to the application or program on your pc and hit the update button on the application which will either get the update for you or will take you to the download page for the update. Now one thing to be cautious of on any of the updates is you do not want to get any of the extra junk that so many try to pass off to you in the download, so read carefully and get only what you are asking for you do not want any extra toolbars or anything. For example for Java there is an icon for Java in control panel, you open that and go to the update button and have it do the update. With Java you do want to make sure that once you have the latest update (take note of the number) then go to Add Remove Programs and remove all the older versions of Java listed leaving only that latest one. You definitely do need those updates all of them have some pretty serious holes in them that can open you up to attacks.

Wot is ok with all your programs, it is added to the browser and will notify you when you are attempting to go to a suspect site you can read the reasons why the site was rated as it was. When doing a Google search you would see red circles on the ones that have a bad rating so you know to avoid them.
That may have prevented you from going to that site in your search that you got the infection from.
It is one more addition to a layered security approach.

No sorry I haven't.

DA , jump on in, my guess is she called me out is because on her other post I suggested she look into adding WOT since she encountered a drive by infection when she went to an unknown site from a Google search.

I never saw it, I can not imagine why that happened. I know I found your contributions very valuable. I had been helping on the thread she had going on KT, as I said I assume that is why I was personally addressed.

I definitely want to hear from others about their thoughts on programs and services, etc. And that certainly includes you DA.

Um...I posted a flippant (but harmless, honest!) remark to DA on that thread. I suspect it may have been misinterpreted by the OP who asked for it to be removed. Maybe.

Certainly unintentional if it offended anyone.

I took your post as you intended, and my response was the same.

RC,

I do not think it was erased randomly as the GW world is way to big for that. I can only guess that a member took it upon him or herself to become the censor of the forum by reporting it. I say this as previously we have had members openly report they have been in contact with GW over one thing or another.

I hope the intention was well-meant rather than busy-bodyish. Historically the forum itself handles things unless they are vulgar, threatening or mean-spirited. It has always been better to jointly address or jointly ignore issues rather than to bring a monitor in.

Censorship is a live breathing concept which by its nature is arbitrary and capricious. An abuse of its power and we all lose.
