The hacking thread and adobe

I am posting this after reading about the IE hack and the info about adobe in another thread. I thought it would better addressed in a new thread.

I have adobe in my control panel but I can't find it anywhere on my PC. I did a start search and I looked through the program files and found nothing. When I first installed Avast it's software updater kept telling me it needed to be updated. When I tried it just looped me around the site. I finally turned the updater off. Can anyone explain this to me? I have W 7, use FF.

Open a new tab in FF and type ..about:plugins .. and hit enter. That should show you what you have and there should be a link at the top of the page to tell you what needs to be updated.

Thank you it did download along with a Mcafee security tool???

I've had minor problems with the last/current version of Flash Player locking up the browsers and stopping internet for a few moments when on certain webpages. I assume it will be fixed soon as I've notice several others having seemingly identical issues. Its supposed to be more safe than previous versions.. they update it mostly for protecting us from newer threats. If you think you need it .. install it. If you don't miss it.. don't install it. This is just one reason I seldom use Firefox. Seems they've had lots of problems lately with add-ons, apps, and other necessities. I mostly have used Chrome and just do not have these sorts of problems.

I can't help with finding that thread, but I've seen some lovely "adobe" colors on this website. I tried many paint samples in our last house trying to get that color. I ended up with LA 'Spice' which worked for that house, but our new house needed something more earthy. I saw this color in a model home while we were house-hunting and asked for its name. I got a sample, and have used it in my new house. Here's a pic of the tub niche in our master bath. I also used it in the Powder room and laundry room and great room ceiling, but pics in those rooms don't come out true to color. This is the best one I can get that I feel represents it (on my monitor, anyway). The color is an old Duron color called 'Basque Brown'. A lovely person on this forum found a Duron paint chip for me and mailed it to me (how cool is that?!); I had the color mixed up at Sherwin-Williams.

Krebs is a journalist and he writes a blog. That means he repeats what he's told and what he garners from public sources. Why pay attention to a site like that, most people don't. Why? Because most PC users have neither the knowledge nor the insight to understand the nature of threats nor program updates that software companies release. Unless Krebs has work experience as a software developer, he likely doesn't fully understand these matters either. The two best tools to use to avoid problems with your PC are your own prudence (about what websites you go to and the sources of files you try to open or download) and the consistent use of a high rated security program. My suggestion is to set programs to update automatically and allow the software companies to do the worrying for you. I'm a firm disbeliever in the myriad of utilities and alternative programs some people clutter their PCs with. They're mostly unnecessary.

I choose not to use anything from McAfee and will uninstall anything from them...but that's just an opinion. If you find it useful then keep it. Probably not harmful but it may pester you with offers to upgrade to something you have to pay for.

Emma next update watch the screens closely, you were offered the chance to not have McAfee installed. Having to scrutinise every window is a pain but a necessary one these days sadly.

I was not offered the chance to not have it. It had to have been hidden until the installation began. Then I couldn't stop it without stopping the adobe. If it had been visible I would have seen it. When I saw install MF, I remembered I had tried that before and tried to find it without and could not.

What about the other things in the list. I cannot find them on my PC. Does that mean I don't need them or they are not on the pc, just left overs from something else.

Emma, that same thing happened to me when I tried to update flash on my own. It did not give an option to not install McAfee. I stopped the install. When my Avast software updater installed the Adobe flash update, it did not install the McAfee security tool. I have searched 'McAfee' and nothing shows up.

The McAfee security tool is (I believe) a plug-in that gets installed in your browser. In Firefox, open a tab and enter .. about:plugins ..to find it. In IE go to TOOLS >> Manage Add-Ons.

I don't understand, when I go to the Adobe Flash page I see this. Do you see something different?

Ah ha...I see what the problem is on my husbands computer. The box with the check in it doesn't show up. When I put the mouse pointer in that area, the little hand shows up to click there. He had me fix FF so he doesn't see all the graphics on a page...

Jean that is probably the reason I didn't see it. I block pictures on any site I use a lot. I tried several sites to download without it without MF and finally gave up. My Avast software updater could not download it at all.
