As this seems new to you have you recently installed Quicktime?

Quicktime like so many other programs decided you needed to run qttask at start up but it is not necessary. You can safely remove that from your startup list and Quicktime will still be available when you need it.

I have not installed Quicktime. Could it have installed itself somehow?

Apple Quicktime would not install itself. However, it is possible you visited a site with some video you wanted to see and they invited you to install the files needed to view the video.

You have 2 choices really, apart from doing nothing of course. You could either check your Add/Remove programs list and remove Quicktime altogether. Or you could use the search feature, look for qttask.exe and rename it qttask.old or whatever you wish so it does not bother you again. That appears to have no effect on the program itself and will not return. Simply removing it from the Startup file is only good till the next time you use Quicktime, then it gets re-instated.

I use Windows Defender to disable most Run at start items, have a couple goodies there on Vista. Easy to put back that way, simple checkbox, simple program.
