Windows Repair Trojan

My Vista Ultimate laptop got hit with this last nite while the grandson was on the Dungeons and Dragons website doing some research...anywho, I was not aware of this trojan til after he left and I did some updating...when the system was reloading after a boot, this quasi-legitimate looking popup was front and center on my screen doing a phony scan and reporting things like" 35 sectors of the hard drive damaged and unrecoverable, memory usage dangerously high, 18 infections etc etc..also, more than half of my desktop icons/shortcuts were missing..luckily the start button was still showing and was able to find my Malwarebytes(which was thankfully updated yesterday)...did a quick scan and it found 8 trojans..Got rid of the popup (which you cannot delete by x'ing out and the shortcut which was lodged in the taskbar and also the shortcut it placed on the desktop..so all was well except that most of my shortcuts and icons on the desktop were missing..found out that part of the nasty stuff this trojan does is to hide these...so went to folder options in the Control Panel and unchecked the box in the View tab ( Do not show hidden files, folders) near the bottom of the list. Sorry for the long post but hope it helps somebody from a NASTY.
P.S. My laptop was completely up to date as well with Virus and Spywareblaster definitions when this happened..
P.S.2..Oh yeah, grandson is no longer welcome to use my laptops for that gaming site...lol..its his desktop or nothing..lol

Thanks for sharing this experience. Seems no matter how careful we may be, there is always some way for unwelcome "visitors" to access our comps. Yes, a careless relative or friend can hasten the process. Glad you got things straightened out.

Sounds like you were letting grandson use your account with administrator privileges....not a good idea. You could create a limited-user account and maybe head off future problems.

RE: Windows Repair Trojan

I never let anyone use my computers with the admin account, they only have access to a limited user guest account, not doing so is just asking for trouble.

I would urge you to go to LzD and have them assist you in running some much more detailed scans because that type of infection is rarely ever all removed with any of the programs used, the special scans are run with the assistance of a help forum specialist.
