Downloading songs from YouTube?

Is there a way to download just the music from a video on YouTube, not the video itself?

"Audacity" will do that. I believe there is a recently updated version now. You may have to download the manual to set it up the way you want it.

If you happen to use Firefox, this extension is kinda nice.

It adds a dialog like this:

I'm sure there are other addons and methods that work. I just somehow stumbled onto this one, it worked, so I stuck with it.

It should work for you as long as you haven't joined the YouTube HTML5 trial.

Vinyl may be the only way to go. If you have a turn table, it's easy enough and cheap enough to hook up to your computer. The cables can be found at most any electronics store. Then it's just a matter of using your recording software. That's what I've been thinking of doing. I have ~150 albums that aren't being used. And I do prefer the analog sound over the digital sound. Even though the recording bitrate is good, I still can tell the difference between cd's and albums. Albums to me, at least, provide a fuller and richer sound than a cd does. Though albums degrade faster, with the appropiate software, I can record the albums to my computer and then use software to remove any pops and/or whistles that the album may have incurred.

That is called 'buffering'. It may be that your internet connection is too slow and the video is loading, playing, loading, playing etc. etc. The simplest fix is to pause the video and allow it to buffer/load completely before playing. You can also get software to download the videos and then they will play without interruption .. but That is a whole nuther topic! 8)

I wouldn't use the word "transfer" to describe the process, but the answer to your question is Yes. Using MP3tag (which is quite easy), you either direct the program to the sound file folder, or drag the sound file from an Explore window to the MP3tag window. The tag fields will be visible, complete the fields (or add new ones) as you wish, then save. The updated info will be in the sound file, the sound file doesn't move anywhere. When you then open the sound file with whatever player software you use, the tag data will be visible. Normally, the tag data is already completed when you buy music from places like itunes store or Amazon, or the information gets filled in when a CD is ripped. Most of the ripping software, and indeed MP3tag, have look up features, meaning, when you rip a CD, it can identify what album it is coming from and automatically get complete tag info for each track from any of several internet sources. When dealing with individual tracks, I know of no look up approach to use. Although, maybe Music Brainz could help?

Download the small program I've put below.... Install after downloading by clicking on the file that downloaded. (It will be an .exe file) After it installs, run the program. If you go to Youtube, you can right click the address of the file which is playing, and Vdownload will download it...and also ask you first, what folder you want to put it in. If it misses the download, you can simply paste the address in it's address bar and click "Download". I use this program quite often. Youtubedownload works great for downloading and then converting to MP3. I also use the Firefox extension for downloading the videos.

Okay, Jean, I downloaded your link and went to try it, but forgot so many videos now have ads before them. How can I skip the ad or edit it out? Also, when I want to convert it, it asks which file. There are so many to choose from, which one do I need?

Thanks everyone, I will try all of them out to see which is easiest, this was the first try.

I don't think you can remove just the ads unless you would use an audio editor.

When it asks what file you want to convert, browse by clicking on the folder just to the right of where it says "Select the video file". I like using the youtubedownloader to convert, because I can download all the videos and convert later at my leisure. For the most part, I do use the Firefox add-on to download. Just easier when you are on the youtube page to click "download".

Tickman suggested Audacity. Have you tried it. You don't have to download the video. Just play it and record the sound with Audacity. Then you can edit out any part you don't want before exporting it as an mp3.
