Question about Dell Support Center

I have a message alert in my system tray that says Dell Support Center 2.0 is no longer available. It prompts me to upgrade.

I did not even know there was a Dell Support Center. I haven't used it to my knowledge - although it looks like it has some useful tools there (like learning how to scan the system for hardware issues, getting help with sounds issues, etc).

Does anyone know what Dell Support Center is? Is it something I should have and upgrade? or is it bloatware? or none of the above?

I have 2 Dells. On the XP box (which is almost 4 yrs old now) the Dell Support Center failed the upgrade process so I uninstalled it. I never used it much and it was always more grief than it was worth. I think the computer boots faster without it.

On the Vista box (3 yrs old) the upgrade was successful, but I haven't done much with it and don't imagine I will unless there is a problem.

IMHO, the DSC is worth keeping ONLY if your machine is still under warranty and you still have the possibility of obtaining services from Dell that you have paid for. If I needed out-of-warranty service, I certainly wouldn't go back to Dell. YMMV

I do have a Warranty until Jan. 2012. So does this mean I should upgrade? (My computer boots so slowly - perhaps a project for another time to figure out why.)

So do I need the Dell Support center upgraded in case I need service under warranty?

I agree I would never choose to go back to Dell for service out of warranty.

wizard, I just wanted to say I have a 6 year old Dell, and though I can no longer extend the warranty (could only get it for 5 years), the last 2 years I had what was called Gold Support. I'm not sure if I paid extra for that over wwhat it would have normally cost for years 4 and 5, but with the Gold Support, my repair call was to be answered in 5 minutes....and it always was. Additionally, other than the initial repair call to tech support which was overseas (India I think) all the later calls were to US tech folks. LMK if you ever want me to check for a US repair # for you. My one and only call to India was a disaster and drove me nuts. Additionally, since having the Gold Warranty for years 4 and 5, I am entitled to tech support for the life of the computer.

Okay, long post. First, Im sending a great big hug to you. Second I definitely agree that for the safety and sanity of your family get him out of your life. You donÂt need his drama and neither do your little ones. They may not realize what is going on but they know when somethingÂs wrong. I think it would be a good idea to have Rhiannon talk to someone. ItÂs better to have someone impartial for her to talk to. My sister has been getting counseling for her and my 5 year-old niece after her relationship ended. Her husband was an alcoholic abuser; he wasnÂt abusive when he wasnÂt drinking and his abuse was mostly psychological, but she found out through the counseling that my niece was more aware of what was going than she thought. She was also very matter of fact when she would talk to the counselorÂjust "this is what happens whenÂ". My storyÂwhen I was 13 my uncle tried to rape me while I was staying at my grandmotherÂs. I didnÂt tell anyone and tried to block it from my mind. All I could do was make sure he was never around my younger sisters. I closed myself off from everyone and pretended everything was "normal", but was terrified of any close relationship. Luckily he didnÂt come around much for family get-togethers and if he did I stayed where my grandma or my mother were. Years went by and one day out of the blue, my grandma asked if something had happened with him. All I could do was nod and start crying. I had thought for all those years that everyone would be mad at me and I would be shunned. Instead she hugged me close and told me "heÂs my son and I love him, but I could kill him", which made me feel so much better. She was my most favorite person in the world. I wasnÂt alone with this anymore. I could breathe again. I got married, had two kids, got divorced, and life went on. I had told my husband before we got married, but still didnÂt talk about it unless I had to. I have two wonderful friends who helped me get through my divorce who I had told about what had happened. When my oldest was in middle school, one of her close friends told her she was being molested and my daughter told her stepmother who then reported it. My daughter was asked to give a statement about what she had been told and I decided that as much as I hated talking about what had happened to me, this was more important. I had my friends with me but still couldnÂt talk about it without getting teary. 20+ years after it happened, my sister made a reference to him and I admitted it to my mother. Every time I talked about it, no matter how hard it was, it felt a little better inside. I still have trust issues and probably always will, but thatÂs getting better too and I was able to write this without tears. I've just seen the last of my friends off into the snowy night. Thanks for the helpful responses. I did a little research and discovered that the cabinets are from 1980 and the company is Haas. I'm surprised what good shape they are in b/c they sure don't get good reports. These are partial overlay with 3 to 4 inch stiles, so much space will be wasted if I DIY retrofit rollouts. I have taken a 48"L, 12"D, 36" H cabinet in my laundry room and cut it horizontally to form a bench with cubbies for boots and used the other half for cubbies above the coat hooks. I kept the stile and framed it out. I used an Ikea butcher block for the bench seat and counter top for the intact cabinet next to it. The back is quite thin but the frame and sides are oak as are the entirely over done raised, raised, raised again panel doors. One plan is to replace and butt the doors taking out the stiles, also replace the hinges and pulls, retrofit them, and paint everything. I'd rearrange them but also add a custom island w/drawers and serving/storage wall area as I enlarge the kitchen space to take advantage of poorly used space in my great room. Another plan would be to replace the pulls, retrofit them, and rearrange them. Again enlarging the kitchen but painting or using light wood for the new pieces. In each plan the carpet (icky) is replaced with hardwood, new plumbing done, new counter tops, and ventilation improved. The duct work was done several months ago when the roof was replaced. I'm quite handy and have a handyman who is willing to teach and work along side me. Which plan would you do? I'm on a limited budget but I also am into sustainability so keeping and modifying the cabinets seems practical. The uppers are ALL glass and in great shape. I'd replace the glass with seeded or something not so clear. This leaves more money for good (read Miele oven and DW) appliances as some of mine are as old as the cabinets. I am a simple but good cook while DD2 is a domestic diva so this isn't a show kitchen. I'm not a pack rat and I'm quite organized. I could make it work with the stiles but... well, they aren't pretty!! I'd appreciate your suggestions.

@barbja99 I don't think that not opening past 90 should be an issue. Its not like you're putting platters in there or anything. I think that they can be installed with the hinges on the right or left. I would install it with the hinges on the right. Then you have more of the door "supported" by the wall; people won't try to wrench the door past where it should go and dent it. The handle should project past the wall. We simulated this with our fridge which also has a close by side wall & we have to say that the restraint build-into the fridge door i.e. doesn't go flying open past 90* hopefully will also be build into the Subzero. The perfect alternative is 24" fridge drawers, but that would be a $1600 wall mistake. Or more! Ugh! If you're really worried about your door, you could have the piece of granite replaced with one that is deeper to pull the whole thing out to the edge of the left wall, or perhaps just slightly beyond it; just enough to make the door face project just beyond the wall. I think that is what I would do (what I'd really want to do is get drawers, then settle on fixing the granite). This would be a construction project: rebuilding & extending the granite support & finding the granite piece to match. I see $1K+ budgeting here. Is that trim piece supposed to stay there with the fridge in place? If this were a desk, it would be right but if that is intended to be there with the fridge, isn't it going to look weird? Not to me. Most people have a wood encasement around it for a tight flush fit. We decided to have a gap which is created by the baseboard trim Aren't these things designed to have the counter basically right on top of them? I guess, some people will have a wood enclosure build tightly enough for the BC to slide into, we chose to be more flexible.

Yes, I think you do need to upgrade the DSC. When the day comes that you need warranty help, the first thing I expect Dell to say is "please follow the instructions as listed in the DSC".

Oh my...MY Dell is 7 years old now and I've never used Dell Support Center. I had full extended warranty for 5 years and had some phone support help, usually helping me reformat. Also, since I paid for the 5 year warranty, I have phone tech support for the life of the computer.

You should focus on dealing with the slow booting. It's often common as things get loaded on your computer and you're not aware of what's running in the background (or know how to disable the non-essential ones). Since you're still under warranty, and you sound like your tech skills may be minimal, call Dell and see what they can do to speed boot-up. Maybe they will have you upgrade the Dell Support Center...but so what? You already have the old version on your computer, so having a newer one is not going to harm anything, and may help.

I have 5 Dell computers and one of the first things I do is uninstall is Dell Support or anything else from Dell. You don't need it, they have never asked about it, I have had a few serious issues and it was never mentioned by Dell support.

I did the same with my HP computer. I don't know why manufacturers continue to bog down computers with all this useless junk.

Thanks everyone. I think I will go with uninstalling it. I have used Dell tech support - and they never asked about it.

Kudzu - my tech skills are limited - but when I have called Dell support I find their skills limited as well - always from a script and a frustrating waste of time. I would not be inclined to use their support to speed up my computer. (Interestingly, when I updated some other programs yesterday and restarted, the restart was fairly quick.) I have found the help on this forum much more useful. At some point, I will tackle looking into what runs at startup - and try disabling what I don't need (maybe after taxes - although I'd much prefer the start up issues to taxes and inevitable Turbo Tax software difficulties).
