Susan, you have to pay for some of the apps? I am really surprised. The whole point of Firefox is that it is "open source." It's a cooperative thing. Many developers work together. I don't use anything but Ad Block Plus, and then some of the "skins"...not sure what they call it (personas?), but you can change the display themes. I have a lady bug theme up right now. Thanks for the link; I'll check it out later. How are the free e-journals progressing? Are the editorial standards as vigorous as for the top-flight print journals? Springer also offers a sort of "best of..." service, in my case I chose Crop Science, articles garnered from an array of their journals. Unfortunately, the notification is monthly and fewer than a dozen articles are posted to me with each email. I had better response from BioMedNet and other similar sites. At one point I received email notifications of a half dozen journals from Springer and could access abstracts. Too often abstracts were not available so I could only access the first line or two of the papers at best. Not very useful or enlightening.

Thanks again, I did pull the HDD, and it was a big job... go figure. It was under the floppy inside a metal cage and with I/O cards blocking the way out, it even had hold down screws from both sides (a real battleship) that required me pulling the CD/RW too. I then connected it as an external storage device to one of my XP computers, and thus to my home network. So I copied all the files I needed (I think) to my wife's current desktop. Then I wondered if I could put it all back together, and did with few problems/reworks. That done I turned it on to see if it worked, in its non-complete way, and it did. So I tried again (now that I wasn't worried about data loss) to install SuSE, my oldest Linux Live CD (Installation) and it failed again, but I noticed that during the timed decision time it offered an F2 key option for "text only" - I figured I'd hit that and see where it went. That was enough, away the installation went which automatically partitioned the HDD and moved W98 into its own partition.. and took about 1.5 GBytes for Linux. The installation automatically handled W98 and created a dual boot startup page. The installation drug on for a long time, maybe an hour and I had to check back from time-to-time to give my decision on some items. When it was done it asked if I wanted the graphic interface, KDE, I input "yes" and I ended up with the graphical desktop. I guess the [F2 = text only] referred only to the input device for the installation. During installation the mouse didn't work, so I had to tab and hit the return to interact. It seems the CPU requirement for "cmov" came after SuSE 8.0. I looked in the SuSE user manual, paper back book, for commands and found the list of very familiar Unix commands, like ls (List) and grep (search), I though they were DOS commands, they are not. Anyway, as the graphic interface works I don't need the Unix commands, but did note Linux will handle DOS commands too, just put an "m" in front, e.g., dir becomes mdir. I haven't tried to transfer data out of the windows area to the USB, but I can look at files in the Windows area, and doing that I'm sure I an copy and paste to an external device. bob414 the KDE desktop has an icon for the W98 file system and I will connect a "thumb drive" to a USB and see how it shows up... it may offer the drag and drop you mention for the Ubuntu.

I'm hoping I did this right. First I think I should mention: After I clicked install I had a message pop up that said "HJT appears to have been started from a temp folder. Since temp. folders tend to be emptied regularly it's wise to copy HJT.exe to a folder of its own, for instance C:Program Files\HiJackThis This way, any back ups tht will be made of fixed items won't be lost. Please quite HJT & copy it to a separate folder 1st before fixing any items." I didn't know how to do this..so I just clicked ok. I then clicked System Scan & save logfile button.... then received a message that said.. "For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HJT may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. to do this, click start, run & type: notepad C:\Windows\Systems32\drivers\etc\hosts & press enter. find the line(s) hjt reports & delete them. Save the files as 'hosts' (w/ quotes), & reboot. For Vista (which is what I have) Simply, exit HJT, right click on the HJT icon, choose 'run as administrator'. Wasn't sure what that was all about either so I clicked ok and then it scanned. The scan literally only took seconds. Is this normal? I didn't do anything else.
