Roku question

My parents bought a Roku but are having to go through a lot of steps to find programs. Is there a main search that will scan everything (Amazon, BBC, etc) for the programs they are looking for? I don't have a Roku and live far from them to see if I can work it myself?

I've had a Roku box for about 4 years and use it mainly to access my Netflix queue. It's not like having a cable box where everything is in one place to search. You use it as an access point or gateway for a number of services. I know if no built-in, universal search. The best suggestions I can make are:
1) They should contact Roku tech support to ask specific questions about what it is they want to do exactly.
2) Go to the web site www.clicker.com which has a search function and universal queue that works across platforms.

I have a Roku box ordered. It should get here any day now.
When I get it set up and start using it I should be
able to help with this problem. I only have Netflix, tho.

dedtired- Some new, flat panel tvs already have the electronics built-in to stream without needing to get an accessory box like Roku. If you do get a flat panel tv that doesn't have this capability, then you buy a Roku box. The Roku box is just one more device hooked up to the tv: think of it as a DVD player, except it streams the movies rather than plays them from a disc. Basically, what it does is pick up a signal from your Internet router and streams a movie from the router to your tv. On the back of the tv are a number of inputs, so you have a cable that goes from the Roku box to one of these inputs. When you are watching regular cable tv, you use your regular remote; when you want to watch a movie with the Roku box, you switch your tv over to the appropriate input source and then use the Roku remote to navigate, select a movie, and to start and stop it. The Roku remote is very basic. When you are done with the Roku movie, you use your regular remote to select the input that puts you back on regular cable. Does that answer your questions?

If I'm understanding this correctly you have a TV made by TCL (which is apparently a large Chinese television manufacturer) that has Roku technology built it. This is not a separate Roku box, correct? I'd suspect that TCL's support folks would have mentioned this but are there any firmware updates for the unit? So the kind folks at TCL would like you to send their defective TV back at your expense? Any chance you bought the TV with a credit card, which may offer you additional protection?

When I switch from antenna to HDMI I get a menu displayed from the Roku. The menu lists Amazon, Pandora Hulu, Netflix, Plex, and about 10 other streaming services. I use primarily Amazon (free with Prime), where many shows and movies are free, while others require payment. The Roku has similar buttons to a VCR remote, so you can stop, start, and pause any show or movie you select. I also just set up a Plex server on one of my PCs, and was able to access it from my Roku. Since my son has made a digital copy on the PC of many of our DVDs (ripped), to take on a laptop when we travel, I am now experimenting with accessing my movies using Plex from my Roku. Overall the setup seems fairly simple, although I have to leave my PC on to act as a server. Plex also allows streaming of music, but I haven't tried loading anything from my own CDs yet. Bruce

Can watching TV mess up your laptop? No. As previously suggested, your Internet connection may not be fast enough but that shouldn't cause "all hell to break loose," but rather just slow the connection. Think of the your Internet connection as a water pipe. If you're taking a shower and someone starting using the water in another part of the house (like filling the washing machine). The pressure in the shower drops. Same thing kind of happens with your Internet, and if the "pressure" drops too far you'll get messages from your browser like "can't connect," "waited too long for a response," etc. The solution is to up your connection speed. If you don't have a contract with AT&T or are long into it, you can probably work out a deal for more speed at little or no cost. Heck, in some cases it can actually cost less. Makes no sense to me but that's how these companies work.

I meant to say: "I know of no built-in, universal source."

Having cleaned up that typo, I have one other reference for you. Below is an article and short video that lays out pretty well where and how you can go to get what. Again, it doesn't solve your basic issue of not having a built-in search for everything, but at least it's a road map to where the content is and explains what streaming devices like Roku can do.

Looks like you can search each channel, but not all at once.
I can search the Netflix channel by clicking the Home button
on the remote (top right) then clicking on the Netflix channel,
then on the remote click the down arrow to highlight the search,
and then search the entire streaming Netflix library from there.

After you get the first screen when you bring Roku up tab over to channel store and they will give you all the channels that are currently available via Roku.
