Wondering if someone could help explain what has happened to my Thunderbird account. When I tried to open my e-mail page a couple weeks ago a prompt came up for me to open a new account. I've had an account for years with them so where did mine go and why won't it come up?

If I put the information they want in and open a new account will it take me back to all my saved messages from my old account or are they gone forever?

And a dumb question...I can't find my incoming and outgoing server info, where exactly do I find it? I've found it before but for some reason I can't now. TIA.

Hi kathsgrdn,

Those settings should be as listed below. That's for the out going server. The incoming should also be in the area too.

To access Thunderbird's list of SMTP server, go to Tools > Account Settings, and select Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left pane of the Account Settings dialog.

Now even I had to look up an acronym - SIL. ;-) Ok, so you have MS Works XLR & WPS files. The problems you are having - or going to have - is that Works is old, and the Office XP Pro your SIL gave you is also old, being actually Office 2002, version 10 of Office. If you don't have too many files, I think your best bet is to try an online file converter. Zamzar claims to be able to open and convert Works files. http://www.zamzar.com/ Save : XLR (spreadsheet) files to xlsx WPS (word) files to docx If you don't want to buy a new version of MS Office, try installing LibreOffice - the newer version of OpenOffice - and it will open xlsx and docx files [ If you want to stick with your SIL's MS Office XP Pro, then convert those files to xls & doc files, respectively. That version of Office is very old though. ] There are other ways of handling this, but probably if you you're going to try anything else, your best bet would be buy MS Works off Ebay or Amazon for $10 or so, open and convert all the files. Btw, you can't even open a .doc file in Office XP Pro ?? That's not a good sign - probably a sign of corruption. Btw #2 - When you say you can't open files, I take it they are on your current hard drive, and not within some compressed backup folder. That is, not within a zip file or the like. Re your backup cds : Can you load one of them, then rummage around in their files and tell us what you find ? (as in, names of files and extensions ?) Most likely they are proprietary formats, but if we know what they are, we could perhaps tell you how to retrieve them. Last, anyway you can get the hard drive back from the repair service ? Probably not, but it would be a second source of backup files. Let us know how it all works out.

The first problem is the scanner no longer has the prompt to scan any longer on my start page. The only way I can print is by using my File drop down at the top of the page now. I can't figure out how to scan pictures because there is nowhere to scan anything from now. I'm confused (most of they time anyway). Are you wanting to scan or print. I do see that if I go Start>My Computer>And right click on my Dell printer, there will be an option to scan. From there I see a choice of Abby reader, or Scanner and camera wizard. What do you see? Last week Dell and I emptied mine, so I too am trying to get everything put back on it. They just did the Operating System with me. There is also a scan button on the printer itself. Is your Dell out of warranty? If not, they should be able to help you with any settings necessary. Sue

Two experiences - a friend started forwarding to me copies of (what to me was) extreme religious stuff that he's active with. After a few weeks of annoyance, I started replying to his emails with questions for him- saying stuff like "Do you really believe this baloney", or "Don't you find this argument silly", or "This contradicts xxxx", or whatever. Pretty ironical, I think he got tired of getting my emails, so he stopped sending the junk to me. Another person, who I think subscribes to every dumb joke email list that exists, started forwarding stuff to me. After a few days, I emailed him simply saying that I get too many daily emails to deal with, could he please take me off the mailing list. I don't think either person was hurt and the unwanted emails stopped. Maybe this is a male/female thing, I prefer to take an active approach to solve issues rather than a passive one.

No, Ravencajun. I just don't understand what happened or where to look for the servers. It comes up and for some reason it still has a list of my contacts but that's it.

If you go to tools > account settings and no accounts are listed I would just start a new account. Just go to tools > account settings and click on account options and add a new account. Put in your name and email address and Thunderbird will find the servers. I get 4 email accounts in Thunderbird and all I had to do to set any of them up was to enter my name and email address.

It's asking for a host name and will not let me not put it in.

Have you tried restarting the computer? If not do so. It's beginning to sound like a corrupted profile in thunderbird.

Since Thunderbird is an e-mail portal and not a provider who is your e-mail through? Hotmail? Yahoo? An ISP?

Did you by chance recently upgrade TB?

Damccoy, my e-mail is through AT&T. I upgraded either Thunderbird or Firefox recently, can't remember which, though. I think it was Firefox because I was having trouble pulling up the internet using it and someone said maybe I needed to upgrade it.

It seems that the mail you had in Thunderbird is gone so at this point I would open your address book in Thunderbird and use the tools > option choice to export your address book. I would then use the Revo Uninstaller (free if you don't have it) at it's highest setting and unintall Thunderbird then download the newest version and install it and set up your account again. You could then import your address book from the file you saved. If you go to att.net and check your mail there you may find that much of it is still there. It depends on your settings in Thunderbird.
