Java SE Runtime Enviroment 6 U 12

Hi,

Have W MS XP

I was going to download this 6U12 version when I got stuck on the option of selecting platform. I didn't know which one of these I should select: Windows, Windows Intel Itanium or Windows x64. Any advice or help appreciated. It also states that this version only works with 64 bit browser plug-in. I don't know if I have 32 or 64, how would I find out what I have? I use Firefox 3.05, IE 7 and Opera 9.23 and that says 32 but the other browser I don't know. So not even sure this newer Java version is for me is it? Sorry so confused and trying with your help to educate myself. Also, once I download this should I then go into Add/Remove and remove the two items there first and then install the Java SE Runtime Enviroment 6u12? The two times there are: Java 2 Runtime Enviroment Standard Edition v1.31 and Java (TM) 6 Update. I also notice on the Control Panel that these two items are listed. If I do (at your suggestion) remove them from Add/Remove will they also go away from the Control Panel? Thank you.

These are the instructions I give to avoid confusion

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from link below and save it to your desktop.

Â Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 12.

Â Click the Download button to the right.

Â Select your Platform: "Windows".

Â Select your Language: "Multi-language".

Â Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".

Â Click ]Continue and the page will refresh.

Â Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.

Â Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.

Â Check (highlight)any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

Â Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.

Â Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

Â Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Â Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.[/color]

-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.

The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter

click Ok and reboot your computer.

I would recommend you follow these steps above:

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

I am having problems with FF and found this thread - I am completely out of the news loop so had heard nothing about Java problems so...hope you can help. I have a mac running 10.6.8. In the middle of watching netflix last night I got an error message saying that Java plug in was disabled and to enable it and restart FF. I checked everything and it was enabled, I disabled my ghostery, etc. Nothing made a difference. Today I tried an update to java and downloaded that (found by check for updates on my mac menu). still didn't fix it. So I found this thread and decided I would uninstall the whole thing. I found directions on FF about how to uninststall Java. But when I seach my mac for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin I get nothing, nowhere. If I just search for Java, I get dozens of hits, but none of them for the applet plugin. I went back and disabled it, but am wondering what to do now. How can I uninstall it if I can't find it? the confusing thing with about:blank is it can be a legit response to having your homepage set to blank that instance if perfectly fine, then there is a nasty malware that incorporates an about:blank instance, that one is often very hard to get rid of, and it now appears this one you have found is yet another variable which may not be part of that nasty malware (coolwebsearch) but is some kind of ad link. It is pretty confusing. about:blank = the URL interpreted by most web browsers as the command to display a blank HTML document I think if it were me I would just avoid weather.com for now. If you are showing clean with all your scans I think you are ok. Just in case your IE is not set up this way you might want to check and make sure. This is for IE 6.0. For other browsers, check microsoft or your browsers developer. # Go to tools --> Internet Options and select Advanced tab. UN-check "Enable Install On Demand" and "Allow Software To Run or Install". That is UN-check! # Go to security tab --> Internet --> Custom Level. Set " Download Unsigned Controls ' and " Initialize and Script Active-X controls not marked as safe " to Disable. Set ' Download Signed Controls ' to Prompt. If you are not experiencing your actual homepage being hijacked and changed to about:com then I don't think you have the coolwebseach variant.

Well - I think I must have done something very wrong. I searched for updates, downloaded the windows binary zip file, extracted the files, ran javara. I first selected to download 2 files (one was optional) - jdk-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe jdk-6u7-windows-i586-p-lft Then I hit the button for remove older versions. Now when I went to my control panel, and add/remove programs to make sure the older versions were removed, I don't think there were any versions there at all. All I find is the Sun download manager. It says I downloaded those 2 files above. Do I need to reboot to finish installation? Does the fact that there are no other java programs listed suggest that I made have successfully removed older programs? (I'm going to start another thread for my McAfee question - because I think that will be more helpful for people who are searching for certain topics). Thanks for the Dr.Web anti-virus link checker. Since downloading firefox is on my soon-to-do list. Lynn.

I should know better and have checked here before downloading the update last week. I am having problems since the update. I keeping getting a warning from ZA the Java Quick Start is trying to reach the internet. I keep 'allowing' and it keeps popping up. I also didn't read anything when I downloaded so have no idea which version (64 or 32 bit) I wound up with.

Would you recommend I uninstall and start over? The pop-up is driving me crazy. It's obviously not running right.

Did you do that above.

As far as I know there is no separate version for 64 & 32 bit Java is just letting you know this version is compatible w/64bit.

And there she is another useless installed service running on the pc.

I have a related question. Several days ago I installed Open Office 3, the latest version. Included was Java 6 Update 7. I already had Java 6 Update 11. Then I got the notification to update to Java 6 Update 12. This installed and removed Update 11. My question is this: If I remove Update 7 will it affect the operation of Open Office since it was included with the latest version of that program?

That's what nice about the new installer it removes the old version now.

If you already have Java installed there is no need to download the OpenOffice.org installer with Java.

If you choose not to download OpenOffice.org with Java (or just forgot about it) you can easily install Java afterwards to get the missing functionality to work.

Thanks, Joe. I figured if I had the latest Java, it wouldn't make any sense to keep the older version even if it was included in the OO download.

I was not a 100% sure either so I Google "Open office Java"
