connecting laptop to TV

I have a HP Pavilion dv9910us and a Panasonic DVD recorder.

I am wanting to hook my laptop to the TV through the DVD player.

I have some home videos on my laptop and am needing to get them off of the laptop and onto DVDs.

I need to know how to hook the 2 together so that the picture will appear on the TV and the videos may be transferred from my computer to my DVD recorder.

How do I do this?

Assuming your laptop has an S-Video output, you can purchase a cable from any electronics store that has an 1/8" plug on one end (headphone jack) and Red/White Composite cables on the other end. That will be your sound, and the S-Video cable will carry the picture.

Simply tune your DVD recorder to the appropriate input (Line 1, Line 2, AUX, Front, Back, etc) and you should be good to go.

Are you saying that you have a DVD recorder in the laptop? Or that you have a standalone DVD recorder?

Some laptops have connectors for the TV (usually either S video or RCA plugs). If you don't have one of those, you should be able to find a device to convert VGA to TV for under $100.

Make sure your browser and adobe flash player are up to date, and check to see if you have a video add-on for your browser and you should be ready to go. A search for the video is often faster than going to a show's website. When you find the video you can click on it and it will begin to play. Depending on the kind of connection you are using (broadband, dsl, etc.) you might have buffering where the video is interrupted while the stream downloads to your computer. This happens a lot in public hot spots and in hotels and similar places; the wi-fi isn't fast enough to handle video; if you are on satellite like a friend of mine is, expect some long waits. If your laptop can't display hd it's ok. Most video is available in lower resolution. Lastly, your cable tv service probably has a page on this topic if you are wanting to stream the program from tv to your laptop. I set it up on my desktop but didn't like it because the video only displays inside a frame box, not full screen like on a tv or on the web. So I prefer getting video off the web. Hope that helps.

zep et. al.: Sorry I didn't get back sooner but with my limited experience, I was a little leary of doing the uninstall of network adapter. However I finally realized that at worst it would only mess up the laptop and not the other devices that are connected and working on the secured network. So: I just uninstalled and rebooted. The adapter did reinstall but I am still not getting a proper connection although things have slightly changed. The secured network got connected, but did not even ask for the security password and simply went to 'validating identity' and simply hung. It didn't even time out. I checked firefox to see if it was expecting a password there, as was the initial case to get connected to the Guest Network (where I am again now), but it couldn't find the server. You may recall, that previously the issue was that the secured net would ask for the password, but find it unacceptable and give 'limited or no connectivity. Is there a way to force the network to ask for the password?? Any other ideas? Eventually, I will probably find a way to get a knowledgeable person out to my house where they could diagnose this. FYI, I am creating another post about security updates that may tangentially be connected to this thread. I apparently successfully installed sp3 but 'security update' keeps wanting to install it AGAIN! I was worried I might not be able to shut down to reload the adapter, but I was able to cancel the update.

depends on what type of connections the tv has and also the laptop, if both for example have an HDMI connection you can simply run the HDMI cable from the laptop to the tv. Some of the newer tv's come with wifi enabled so that they can pick up a signal from your home wireless router so the laptop is not needed for a direct connection. There are various options depending on the connection types available. What do you have?

I have a seperate TV, laptop and dvd recorder.
I have got an S-Video cable and a audio cable. I can get sound now, but no picture. How do I get both?
I have tried every input on the TV but it won't work. Any ideas??

I found specs for that laptop and it does seem to have an S-video connector, so you should be in good shape.

There's probably a key combination that is needed to switch display from the laptop built in display to the S-video. On one laptop I have, it's Fn-F8. On another, it's Fn-F3 (both of these are Dells).

There may be a key that has a picture of a monitor or something that will control this. I'll see if I can find any information about the key needed for your laptop.

I found the manual for your laptop, and you need to press the fn key and the F4 key to switch display. You may need to hit it a few times to get the right display selected.
