Very slow Ubuntu

Hi Folks,
I fully realize I should ask this question on a Ubuntu Forum, however, they are waaay too technical for me. Hopefully you folks can muster up more patients then other sites. Here goes:
I use DSL, my Ping is 13.48 Mbp down and 1.93 up. The old machine has 2 Gb memory. It has a AMD 64 3500 processor, Ubuntu 1204 LTS 32 bit Operating System, With Fire Fox 28.0 Browser, T-Bird Mail 24.4.0. 68 GB HD with Windows Vista on another partition approx. the same size.
If I have the desktop pulled up and click on the Icon for Fire Fox, it takes 8-9 seconds before Google will load....other programs load as slowly.
Anyone have any ideas what I can do to speed this machine up?

I run Ubuntu based Linux but I'm far from an expert, just muddle through, so keep that in mind.

If Firefox load times were your only problem, I'd ask you if you run Adblock Plus, and if so, how many subscriptions are you subscribed to? I believe loading several thousands of filter rules before you even get a glimpse of your homepage can slow things down quite a bit. 8 or 9 seconds? Could be worse.

I don't know about "other programs" though. If I remember correctly, the first time I installed/upgraded to the new "Unity" desktop my older machine wasn't happy with it, and truthfully, neither was I, so I reverted to something closer to the old gnome desktop I was familiar with.

Another lightweight desktop environment is xfce. I'm using that right now, looks something like this:

On top of checking if add-ons are the concern here, I would also point out that ram/video card may be an issue here. While I realize that if we really wanted to Ubuntu (32 bit) only really needs 128-256 mb of memory to work. However, to make it run efficiently with firefox and so forth more is needed. Accordingly, one way to increase performance would be to increase ram. Slap another 2 gigs ( I dunno if companies make 2gigs any more) in there and it should work better. Furthermore, there is also a program called zram that has done wonders with other machines ( I would try this first). Beyond that all I can really say is double check for any viruses and maybe disable IPv6 if you haven't done so already.

Lastly, viruses are theoretically possible on linux based OS's just very, very unlikely. In fact it is more likely you have a virus on your windows partition that is effecting memory consumption.

How are you paying them? Hopefully through a bank and not upfront. Sounds like a lot of problems for you, but just because they are slow doesn't mean they aren't good. You say they are doing a great job but then hope they won't so you can say "enough". I don't want to sound rude but do you want it quick or right (of course I would want both! LOL) As far as working on 5 things at once, that's common. Sometimes material isn't there or has been received unusable for some reason. Would you want them to stop and wait for the usable material so they could finish one thing at a time? Our GC ordered trusses well ahead of time but they were 3 weeks late in arriving. That wasn't GC's fault but now our timeline is a over a month behind schedule. As far as being slobs, what do you define as a slob? Left over food and trash? Or, pieces of wood cuttings and shavings? We're building on a Scenic Byway, so DH told GC upfront that the job site would be kept clean, still 8 months into our build and DH has to remind GC ever so often. If you are paying your GC as work is completed you can easily tell him there will be a penality for any job cleanup you need to have done in the future. He may quit on you but it sounds like that might be ok. Good luck!

Happy to report that yesterday I drove the Jeep for the first time. Easy peasy. Going out again for the next three days - grocery shopping at Walmart, two dr's appts. the next two days. A friend is going w/me today, but after today, I'll be solo flying. Hip is soooooo much better, but the old back is the problem, which never gets better - just worse. Still thanking God for my quick healing - just three months ago, I didn't think I'd be this far along. Thanks for y'all's prayers and concerns. Keep up the good work, mosaicists - you're still the best.

The basil is not quite as picky, but the peppers and tomato plants need space or they will stunt and delay growth, which can affect your harvest. Transplanting will not hurt them, leaving them two to three plants to a pod will harm them far worse. I tend to start potting mine up when they have 2 sets of true leaves. If you can't stand to thin them down to 1 per pod, you can try to tease them apart when you transplant, keeping in mind that you run the risk of breaking or fatally damaging the plants. But they really do need more space , ideally one plant per container. I use solo cups as my next size up from peat pods, just make sure to poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage. When you repot the tomato plants, you can bury the stem deep (gently break off the seed leaves and repot above where they were, maybe even higher) which encourages more root growth. Tomatoes like to be planted deep every time you replant them. You want thicker, stronger stems that can withstand wind, not leggy plants. Also make sure to take the mesh netting off the outside of the peat pods before you repot. Daylight is good, read a little about hardening off, but they will still need supplemental light indoors. The more the better up to 16 to 18 hours per day.

actually ... if you start at a tip ... and study the bark back toward the trunk ... you should be able to see the different years of growth ... it changes as it ages ... it might be minor.. and you may not notice.. but if you look closely.. you can usually see it ... it will fill out.. when its darn well ready to.. lol ... keep in mind.. roots are said to be twice the tree you see above ground... and it will be fully established .... when it grows those roots ... and in the mean time ... well .. we cant see it.. so we cant prdict much at all .. frankly.. the tree looks great .. perhaps its only problem.. is your expectations ... ken ps: is the only water its gotten since planting.. from that weep hose??? .. or whatever it is ... to properly water a tree of that size.. you would have to drown the other plants ... to get the water down into the root zone .... it shows no lack of proper watering.. but perhaps it could have used some more DEEP watering .... who knows.. patience grasshopper ....

There are some things that might be running that can slow your system to a crawl. And they might be loading themselves at startup.

Restart the machine, and open the "System Monitor" .... take a screen grab of it and then log onto the Internet, go to Google and see what each thing does.

Search for Ubuntu and the name of the process and see what it says about it.

I forget what they were, but I had to kill off and uninstall some things that Ubuntu or Gnome or KDE thought were fabulous utilities ... finding various tech forums all griping about it.
