You might be able to find what you want from a third party, but my understanding is that MICROSOFT WILL NOT HELP YOU. That is the very definition of an OLD UNSUPPORTED OS. What you are asking is like trying to get Ford Motor Company to sell you a new engine for a 72 Pinto...THEY WON'T DO IT. I'm sure this is not what you want to hear, but it is what it is.

Not knowing why you choose to maintain old computers with an old OS, I can only say this: if you intend to use them for anything other than pure recreation, you are making a mistake. They cannot be made secure and you are exposing yourself to significant risk if you use them for things like online banking or shopping.

Oh, no, I don't use them for anything other than old games and such.
My old laptop is only used if I need to show someone something
where a computer is not handy. Usually, a document
of some sort, or blueprints and drawings and such. I would put
some version of linux on it but there is not a video driver available for it.

I only use my main computer (fully updated XP) for banking and online shopping.

I know MS made CDs available for a while that had all the updates on them for XP. I was hoping maybe MS still made updates available for other older OSs on CD.

It was worth a try.

There are lots of ways for Windows to become "corrupted" that have absolutely nothing to do with a virus or other malware. That's not to say that you didn't a some kind of infection and it's important to use software to protect your system. You also need to realize that tech support's solution to almost everything is to reinstall the operating system. Level 1 techs don't have the time or possibly the skill to diagnose every problem. So the pat answer is a fresh install. That's why it is so important to make regular backups of critical data. Invest in an external hard drive or use one of the online services like Mozy or Carbonite. If you are going to use an external device don't forget about multiple backups and offsite storage. All the backups in the world won't do you a bit of good if they are sitting next to the computer when the house burns down or a tornado strikes.

Thanks everyone. I already did the Word update bc. I realized that my daughter would be continuing to bring work back and forth from school. I'm pleasantly surprised that an older version of Microsoft Word is update-able - without being asked to pay for an upgrade. Bob - thanks for explaining what that update is doing. Now I'll know what .docx documents are. I have an older Word myself and all the files are .doc - but it explains the trouble I've had in an organization where we send each other word documents - some must have the newer word and some the old. I will get the Windows Media Player 11. That's a program she uses. One of the reasons I asked here is bc. googling often gets me descriptions/info I don't understand. This is what I found on the update for root certificate: "This item updates the list of root certificates on your computer to the list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables you to use Extended Validation (EV) certificates in Internet Explorer 7, a greater range of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and security enhanced code delivery. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed." I have no idea what that means and whether I should get it. What I found when I googled Update for Windows XP (KB971513) sounded either scary (maybe it would mess up the computer's functioning) - or at least not clear as to it's value - so I'll skip it unless somebody hear knows differently. mudlady- You're sort of comparing apples to oranges. A Kindle Fire OS is much simpler and more limited in function than a PC's OS. You should simply buy the newest Kindle Fire and not worry. I suspect the device will fail physically before you have to worry about the OS being a problem. Amazon wants the Kindle Fire to work well for years to come: they don't want to alienate their ebook-buying customer base by introducing incompatibilities with new models. Finally, in all fairness to Microsoft, their ending of support for XP was no secret. They did maintain it for 12 years and warned people years before about the fact that support would be ending, and they even had three successor systems in release before they did end XP support. I have an old tablet that came with the latest OS available at the time -- XP -- and it's still functional. Just because support ended for that OS doesn't mean the software quits working. The best strategy is to buy current technology with the most current OS and use it. You may want something new in 10 years, but I don't think there is cause for alarm that an HDX 7 will suddenly turn into a lemon.

Last time I ran into this scenario (quite some time ago) I found that installing the most current version of IE for the o/s allowed me to retrieve the updates.

As azinoh pointed out, security is compromised even if this is successful, due to the fact your o/s is no longer supported.

I have no idea if this method still works, but the time involved trying it is minimal.
