"no signal" on monitor

Hello...

When I turned my computer on this morning, I discovered that it was not "communicating" with either the keyboard or the monitor.

PC is a Win XP Pro which has been working fine--up-to-date on virus protection etc. Not sure what additional info to include.

The monitor is getting power. It gives a "no signal" warning when turned off, then back on. Not sure about the keyboard--none of its lights are on. Since the monitor is out, IÃ¯Â¿Â½m not even sure the PC turned on when I pressed the power button, but I do have the light that tells me itÃ¯Â¿Â½s on.

I have traced all the cords and they are secure.

IÃ¯Â¿Â½m wondering if thereÃ¯Â¿Â½s anything else I can check before hauling it into the shop?

Thanks for any suggestions (I know XP is old and should be replaced. I'd rather keep it for a while if this issue is fixable.)

While is booting up do you get anything at all on the screen? Like those self tests that BIOS does? Or Windows "trying" to load?

Do you hear any beeps? Does the CD/DVD attempt to read a disk while booting? LED flashes, whirling sounds?

You say the power light is on. How about an HDD activity LED flashing? Is there an amber LED in the back by the Ethernet cable flashing slowly on and off?

Do you have any sort of boot-able CD you could try to boot to and see if you have a display then? Something like a Linux live disk maybe?

Sorry, I really don't have the expertise, I'm not a tech, just asking questions out of curiosity, but questions that might help someone else help you.

Answering Chuggerguy's questions will give us all a better idea.

However if you cannot fix it yourself be very wary about taking it anywhere to fix. XP has only days before updates stop and the machine is obviously quite old.

Spending money seems futile when new computers are so reasonably priced these day and their capabilities are far superior to those of an XP computer.

Chuggerguy ask about the BIOS beep, very important to know. that. also do you hear the fan/s spin up. The fact that the video and the keyboard are both acting up might suggest the power supply has quit.

Add the make and model of the computer to the questions asked above too.

The monitor has it's own power plug so will work independent of the computer.

My thermometers have to be in full shade during a sunny day, or they give me 150+ degree readings. That's convenient that you live within the broadcast range of the thermometer. Never mind. When I went to shut down the computer in Safe Mode I hit Restart by mistake and now it works fine.

Your symptoms seem to indicate an 'open'safety capacitor/diode or an open lead on the capacitor/diode. This would be one of the capacitors/diodes connected to the collector of the horizontal output transistor. These capacitors/diodes control the peak-peak voltage to the horizontal output transformer. If not controlled, the high voltage will be too high, resulting in a large picture and/or power supply shutdown. hth

Do a search for "avia home theater." You should be able to find at online retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon, Buy.com, etc. IIRC, it's a bit expensive for a DVD. $35, $39, something like that. 4:3 is a standard "square" television picture, not wide-screen. "Full-screen" in DVD jargon (meaning the picture fills a regular TV screen). LCDs and plasmas typically have one or more display modes that s-t-r-e-t-c-h the square picture to fill the wide 16:9 ratio screen and eliminate the blank sidebars. It makes people, buildings, objects look fat and squatty. Many viewers don't like the sidebars and would rather have a distorted picture that fills the entire screen. The only legitimate reason to do that is as protection against burn-in, but burn-in isn't as big a problem as it's made out to be ... and there are other ways to reduce the risk that don't involve a goofy-looking picture.

Borrow a monitor from someone, and you will be able to tell if the problem is the monitor, or the computer.

Hi, all, and thanks for the great advice.

I finally just decided to crash the PC and try re-starting it. Guess what, the monitor came on just fine, as did the computer. It wasn't all that happy about being crashed, but did that diagnostic thing and was OK. I have no idea why the monitor didn't come on and then did, but its older than my PC, was used when I bought it. I have bought a new one and will be using new cables.

The keyboard problem apparently was due to a switch on the surge protector being thrown. when I corrected that, the keyboard worked fine.
