Flash Drive?

My daughter just got a new laptop, but wants to save all her pictures and music from her old laptop. There is over 10GB of 'stuff' according to my computer guy. Is a flash drive the best way to do this? I'm sure she shouldn't put all this stuff on her new computer, but she would like access to it somehow.

What do you think of the drive in the link?

That is one way to do it with a flash drive or burn it to DVD. Any name brand flash drive should be fine, I generally go with Kingston, have personally never used Verbatim but they are a well known brand.

Be sure she scans all of that stuff well with an updated antivirus program and malwarebytes prior to moving to a new pc so she knows everything is clean and safe.

The least expensive way to do with is to simply connect both computers to the same home network, share the folder(s) that contain the files she wants to keep, and simply copy the files from the old machine to the new.

Certainly you could use a flash drive as well. You don't need a >10 GB drive to copy the data unless it's one big file. Just copy the first 100 files, then the second 100, etc. A 4 GB drive should be under $10 and 8 GB under $15. For occasional use, it really doesn't matter what drive you buy.

Insert flash drive in USB port. Open Windows Explorer by right clicking on the Start button and click Windows Explore. If Win8 the folder shows on the taskbar when in the desktop. Drill down the left side for the flash drive, click the plus sign or triangle depending on which windows to drop down the menu or if only the movie files just click to highlight and the files appear on the right side. Right click on each file and click to rename in the pop up menu then simply add 10, 02 to 20 to the beginning of each video in the required order, clicking OK each time and you should be good to go. That sounds good, as it would mean only one click was necessary to display the contents of the thumb drive. But how can I set WE to a default that represents the thumb drive? It won't show a thumb drive at all--much less its contents--unless there is actually a thumb drive in a USB port. The problem is probably that I don't understand how to set WE to start with the "C: root directory." My WE always comes up with a listing to the left that starts with Favorites, Libraries, etc., and C: is a bit down the list. I never used WE (from the Start button) much and have just realized that it is apparently the same thing as "My Computer," which I have been double-clicking on for a connection to the thumb drive. If I click on WE, which I do have pinned to the taskbar, and then one more click on the name of the thumb drive, that's two clicks to see the contents of the drive. One less click than if I click on the My Computer icon on my desktop. So thanks to you, I now only have to make two clicks, instead of three. Perhaps that is the fewest clicks I can hope for. Granted, the old autorun way only required one click, so I would only be saving one click anyway; but hubby and I are translators who both work on the same job, so we are constantly swapping thumb drives back and forth, and it gets old going through a series of clicks every time. If I had never known the convenience of autorun, I would be taking things in their stride and not be complaining.

Hi Bob, thanks for the quick response..more questions. I have 65 File Folders, some only have one photo, other's have 4-12. Must I add all 65 folders to come up with an accurate number of MB's. I can't find any place that gives me a total of My Photo's. Steve

I vote for azinoh's approach. Using Windows Explorer, select the unwanted files and push the delete button. Reformatting a drive simply to remove files isn't a good idea, it's like going fishing with a depth charge. Reason being - there could be firmware or other software files that a reformat could remove and make the drive inoperable. Why take the unnecessary risk?

Regardless of your choice of media since you apparently consider thi data important you should consider a double backup on different media. All media has a projected life-cycle, but that is what it is exactly, projected. No one knows for sure and all media have some history of failure. I personally like the idea of drive and DVD in cases like this.

There are several online storage sites, most give 50gigs. free, I have loads of photo's, videos etc. at dropbox.com you simply go there, login and see your storage box, and you get a dropbox on your desktop too...

Nothing wrong with on-line storage if that is what a user wants. However, if the data is important to the user I have to repeat a double backup is advisable.

If a .com pulls the plug one day or it is shut down by a creditor or governmental entity, what would the user do?

Let me clarify.. in addition to other back up methods, I use many, I also use online storage... drop box is doing well, will be around a long time, I figure? and there are others also.
