Why can't we all just get along? :-)

I've noticed more than the normal amount of friction lately on the forum. I would love to see everyone be a bit more tolerant of one another's opinions and ideas.

None of us are 100% correct or incorrect all of the time. It takes a rounded base of talent (experience and knowledge) to really make a successful forum that offers free assistance to a wide range of 'customers'. I think that this is a great forum and it makes getting help easy for many GardenWeb users. Sometimes the best tool for helpers is the ability to listen to what our poster is asking and interpreting what that really means :-) It's also harder than actually resolving the issue.

We all have very different styles in the way we assist and because of that each of us may develop a 'following' of posters who want a specific helper to answer the question. Sure, it may delay the resolution if that person isn't monitoring the forum, but that is the poster's prerogative. Most of us have full lives outside of the internet and just can't get here every day.

Finally, although we may all have different styles, I would love to see less antagonism toward each other and our posters. I was brought up to believe that if you can't say something nice (or at least neutral) maybe you should resist the urge to hit the submit button.

An interesting observation.

Though an occasional visitor only, one of the reasons I return to this forum (and other Gardenweb forums) is the general upscale level of maturity on it, likely combined with intelligent moderation. There are the usual veteran members who post good advice and try to help folks out.

I used to frequent many, many forums only to watch then descend into complete (insert negative connotation here) matches, and then gave up completely because of what a pointless exercise it had become.

I think that (besides the state of the world in general), the whole computer demographic has changed somewhat with the computer becoming much more of an "appliance". Therefore expectations are somewhat changed from what they used to be. (I can make that statement based on what I'm seeing as a service tech on the job.)

Fortunately I work with some very qualified people who are much more likely to explain why they will or will not agree with you, rather than get into a yelling match. Hopefully this concept will prevail here and the trend you mention is only a minor aberration.

Hummers can get along! Wish I was smart enough to post a picture of the 21 birds on 2 feeders that I took a few years ago. I was lying on my back and took the pic straight up. Could only get 2 feeders in the pic from that distance, but had another 5 or so feeders that looked the same. Nineteen of the birds were sitting on the feeders taking turns and 2 were hovering. I believe there were 8 ports on each feeder. One would dip into a port and when he (She - all females or first year birds -no red)came up for air, one sitting beside her would take her turn. Only tried this once, but could have gotten more birds in the pic if I had tried harder. Females seem to be more tolerant and less easily agitated, but I have never seen them as less fierce when it comes to guarding a feeder. Saw a female this morning turn completely around with her feet looking away from the feeder to let an annoying bird know she wasn't leaving the feeder. Never seen this trick done before, although it was simple. Sat out for about 10 minutes this morning, but it is already too hot here in S. AR to even play golf.

Thank you everyone! We are really excited..this will be the last one here for a long time so hoping I get my grandaughter this time around. My youngest son is in no way ready to have kids! LOL....he still live at home! This will be it for us until he has some. A boy will fit in quite nicely in this family so it's ok too. But you all know I am wishing for that girl so keep thinking PINK for me! She goes to the doctor this afternoon and we will have a due date then. Thanks again!

Ang, most likely it isn't the rollover lines but the phone system itself. My office phones are powered by a PBX board, an old one that I put in the office the day I opened it in 1989. For me to get caller ID requires that I add on to the board, to the tune of $1100 per line (6 lines) so that isn't going to happen anytime soon! (you indecent little hussy, you!)

How I Loooooove these cat stories!! I couldn't help getting a few tears in my eyes but so many more laughs!!! At 73, I can't say I ever remember a time I didn't have at least one weaving in and out of my legs, tail up, meowing either for attention or food. A few even tried to use me as a scratching post !lol My bff in IL takes in rescues, and at the moment has 21 or 22. The 100 yo historic home she bought 9 years ago came with 2 separate garages, one housing the majority of the kitties, the other is used for storage, but she always keeps the big door open a foot at the bottom, and knows *other* critters take part in the 'vittles' also. Sthe has either 4 or 5 in the house, one being a mama cat w/7 kittens, the very start of her rescue 'mission'. She gave away 2 of those kittens(after neutering!),and never stopped regretting it. They have all found a forever home with her. Her vet/food costs are insane, and when I visited in the summer we found worms in one of the litter pans, and in a two day period, took every cat into the vet to be dewormed. That was $400. It's neverending work! Whenever I call she's scooping, feeding, or rocking one of them in the old rocking chair that was moved out to the garage. She also donates to almost every animal organization known to man, even if it's only $5. She's a one-woman rescue shelter, and I wish I were closer to help. We always say we like animals more than people because animals can't help their situatuon, but people usually can.

Exactly.

To simply disagree with another person's opinion isn't a personal attack. It's too bad, some here don't understand that. Giving reasons for a disagreement is enlightening for all, including the "giver", who might learn that his/her assumptions or info is wrong.

Sorry for repeating what I'd said in another post, but I believe asking a specific person to respond to a forum question is considered quite rude. Gardenweb provides a means for people to send emails. A public forum is for public conversations, email can be used if a private conversation is desired.

I discourage anyone from using the private email when seeking help.

There are two reasons for that, first is that lurkers are then denied the chance to perhaps learn something.

Second you then only get one opinion. Asking for help in an open forum offers the opportunity for more than one line of thought on the issue. Particularly when you read some of the very vague questions asked which are often not backed up with relevant details of the computer or program for which help is sought.

There is a tremendous difference between an exchange of ideas with their differences of opinion versus acting all-knowing and superior, or being condesending, rude, sarcastic, and mean spirited.

If all posters will stick strictly to the question(s) posed by OPs without any editorializing, there would be few, if any, problems.
