computer shutting down

I have a new computer using Windows 7. I need to change settings so it doesn't shut down with out me being aware of it. What do I need to change? Many thanks.

I think you mean the computer is going to "Sleep".

If you set Hybrid Sleep to Ã¢ÂÂoffÃ¢ÂÂ then your computer will not sleep. To set it off do the following.
1. Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings
  2. Click on Ã¢ÂÂChange Advanced Power SettingsÃ¢ÂÂ
  3. Expand Sleep
  4. Under Ã¢ÂÂAllow Hybrid SleepÃ¢ÂÂ ensure that the settings is set to Ã¢ÂÂOffÃ¢ÂÂ
  Now your computer will be on all the time

Thanks owbist for the browser suggestions. chemocurl, I did open both of the blogs that you posted. I even looked around a bit on both to see if my problem happened again. (Loved both of them, too, since I love to garden.) Neither made my computer shut down. Not sure if I didn't 'visit' them long enough or not for it to happen. No, I don't have anything on blogspot myself. We haven't noticed the 'shut downs' happening with anything else. Do you have any suggestions as to what may be causing this? Thanks for your help!

Perhaps the update and the concern are unrelated. However, a prudent person could conclude they are. Since this is a post-update concern have you thought about removing the focus update if you can? If you can get in Safe Mode, open Windows Update and then its history. The information for uninstalling an update will be available there. Not all updates can be removed. Not focusing on Amity, but for the benefit of those reading the thread, this is an example of why users are alerted against updating audio and video drivers when the system is operating properly without the update. In other words, please consider leaving well enough alone. Make note of what's available, what the change log is, and where it is located. Also, often hardware manufacturer drivers released through Microsoft are already obsolete due to lag time. If something needs to be updated a visit to the manufacturer's website first is advisable. Basically he has built you a new computer and I think that is great that he can do that. Does he know about the problem and is unsure of a fix or would you prefer to find the answer without his knowledge and not embarrass him? Either way from the little we have I suspect that perhaps the power supply is not big enough or the cooling fan over the heatsink on the CPU is not up to the job. Was this originally a factory built computer? If so provide the make and model please so we can see what parts are left from the original computer. If you are comfortable it would help if you removed the left side panel (likely held on by 2 screws needing a screwdriver) we need the make and model of the power supply and the output watts listed, that is the big metal box at the top rear of the cabinet with all the wires sticking out of it. While the side is off do you have a small fan that you could place on the desk blowing inwards while the computer runs? This will be temporary to see if this is heat related, if it is cutting out frequently it should not take too long to check the heat issue if it is there. Any chance you know the make and model of the new motherboard? It will be stamped on the board if you do take the side off.

Thanks dcarch. I know the insides are dusty, though we had a workshop deep cleaning not long ago. The new card is working fine. Not sure if there's a heatsink inside as I try to avoid getting in the way looking inside the box when the techie is working (lol). (I had a big heatsink on my amateur radio equipment when I was active, not that it helps my computer though.) I'll be getting an upgrade in November which will include reformatting the drives and more memory so another cleaning will be included. I'll also be adding a tips and tricks section to the last tutorial before I finish. Thank you for your comments. :-) SharonCb

I googled >computer shuts off by itself got "About 5,740,000 results (0.21 seconds)" :-)

Lotsa reasons. Most common theme seemed to be overheating.

What brand is this computer? Is it still under manufacturer's warranty?

Under Power Options in the control panel, besides sleep, are several choices. One is when to turn the computer off. Have you checked your settings?

Perhaps the heatsink fan has quit, then computer will indeed shut down to protect the processor (CPU)

If a desktop remove the side panel to see if the fan is spinning up, if a laptop feel the outlet for the air it will be on the side, back or bottom.

Or if the computer stays running long enough download Speccy from Filehippo and run it to see your temps. Stay with the free version.

Does the computer run for seconds, minutes or longer before shutting down?

I will check the settings. I think Windows shut it down after completing some updates. This is what I want to stop. I never want it to shutdown without my knowledge.

Short of editing the registry which may not be a good idea, I'm not sure you can prevent auto-reboot to complete updates.

You could of course turn off "Automatic Updates". Set it to download them but let you decide when to install them.
