First of all, make sure you have no disks or thumbdrives left in the computer dvd tray or in a usb port..if there is nothing there..check this out...

Why do you take the battery out?

I take the battery out sometimes just to preserve it so it lasts a bit longer. My old computer's battery lost it's mojo within 2 years to the point it wouldn't charge more than 5-10%. This laptop gets used all day into the evening for business and personal so it's always on except when I'm sleeping.

genes....I'll look into that. Will that just restore to an earlier restore point keeping the computer intact?

I have had my laptop for 3 or 4 years and the battery has always been in it. I took it out when someone suggested it would be better without it. I didn't like all the little metal contacts uncovered so I put it back in. The battery was the cover.

It has been fine with it in.

I'm open to someone having a different view, but I don't think laptops are really intended to be used on an ongoing basis with the battery out.

I'm going to offer a wild-a_ _ speculation based on absolutely nothing but a hunch: maybe you wouldn't have this problem if you left the battery in. Also, laptops aren't really well suited to be on all day. Most have poor cooling performance and all the components get cooked from the heat. If you're worried about prolonging its life, save it for when you need portability and instead buy a cheap desktop/net top that's better equipped to be left on.

All batteries lose their mojo in time - then you replace them. You're not accomplishing much by taking it out. Other than in extreme cases, replacement OEM laptop batteries aren't all that expensive.

Lenovo & Toshiba laps I've had both recommended leaving the battery in place. Protects it when power failure too when on ac.
The Lenovo has a setting for 50% charge to prolong the life of the battery if on ac always. Replacement batteries are about 100 bucks !

laptop is only 4 months new Warrantied I would assume .. and what you describe matches my oldest Toshiba ... either the power circuit had confusion for some reason, or the power circuit has a problem. If it does it again I certainly would phone the support line. Toshiba told me to send mine in and I didn't thinking it was just one of those rare things that occasionally goof up... until it died completely - after the warrantee ended.

Ps; The cmos battery according to Toshiba, would only gain charge with the battery in place too.

When starting next time listen very carefully to see if the fan spins up. If the fan has failed then the shut down is to protect the processor.

Another thought. Did the computer actually shut down or did the screen remain blank leading you to believe the computer quit. I ask because just last week I had a laptop brought to me with exactly this problem, it was solved by holding the 'Off' button down for 4 seconds. Then after waiting just a few seconds I fired 'er up and away she went. Nothing else wrong.

Owbist, when it shuts off, it completely shuts down. All lights go out, so it's not just a black screen thing.

Ran the Antispy and Malware and got rid of the antispy findings which were just tracking cookies. Ran a sfc /scannow and it found some corrupted files that it couldn't fix. Don't know what they were as I don't know how to find that.

I did shut down earlier today and rebooted 10 minutes later, and it booted up just fine that time.

The fan is so quiet on this machine, it can rarely be heard, but I'll listen next boot up will be in the morning.

On a laptop, it can be very easy to be unsure about the status of the machine, whether it's on hibernate or sleep or off. If the laptop without battery was sleeping/hibernating and the power cord was pulled, all bets are off as to what it would do when reconnected to power and rebooted.

Best bet is to go into the power setting in the control panel and change all the "plugged in" settings to never, ie, when it goes to sleep, when the display turns off...if you are not using it for several hours and feel better if it is turned off, then shut it down via the Start button>shutdown..I just leave most of mine go 24/7..
