It does not seem to be a network adapter issue either, as both wireless and direct connection are problematic. The next step to see if a program typically Anti Virus is causing issue. So lets boot the computer to safe mode with Networking and see if you can connect that way, lets just concentrate using a direct connection. Restart the computer, keep tapping the F8 Key, the computer will boot to the advanced boot options menu black screen with white letter. From the list presented to you, use the arrow key to select Safe Mode With Networking once selected hit enter on the keyboard. Now try to connect to only Google.com. Let us know if you can connect that way. Do not surf the internet in this mode. Please be sure to try another browser too maybe before doing all this above in case this is a silly internet explorer issue.. Joe

Thank you zep and ravencajun. I'm writing through a friend because now I can't log in to GW! Same old stupid thing of page had been cancelled, no connection blah blah. What I did before writing in the first time was run disc clean, defragmentation, ad ware SE Personal and yes I had rebooted. Since then I have run the ATF cleaner, run the complete scan on superantispyware, unplugged every wire in the back of the tower, replugged. Apprently IE is down also because I clicked on the e and got the same message of not being able to display this page. However this page did give me a place to click on diagnose. It said "Windows could not detect any wired or wireless network cards cards on your machine. If you are connecting to the Internet through a phone line using a dial up connection you will need to contact your ISP. Otherwise please make your your network card drivers are installed properly." Why would they suddenly disappear? I don't think I deleted any programs. Answers for zep: Mozilla says page load error, Firefox can't find the server .The browser could not find the host server for the provided address. IE sigh, I want to say I upgraded to 7 but don't know where I would find the info except on the now defunct IE page. It is an elderly Dell computer, I have Windows XP. Thanks for your help, Kabby

It's the phone company, a human always answers the phone (when you get to the end of the automated directory tree that all companies have). I've always had excellent tech support response from ATT and its predecessor Pac Bell for terrestrial service. The few times I've needed a technician to come out, I don't think the phone-in call took more than a few minutes. They first run automated diagnostics and failing any useful info from that, they immediately tell you what time slots are open in their schedule. As with any tech support call on any matter, to save yourself time, you need to quickly assess whether the person on the call is the proverbial school nurse, or instead someone who has the knowledge to address the issue. BS is BS, no matter what the subject matter. Maybe the service isn't so hot in other parts of the country.
