Wireless Router Recommendations

Comcast tech replaced our modem and indicated that our Belkin router is likely causing some of our problems. The router is old and he suggested getting a new wireless router. We have two computers (one MAC and one PC) in the same room and all we use them for is email and surfing the net. He said Linksy, Cisco and NetGear are all good brands.

I went to Best Buy to check on what they had and the ones the salesperson recommended have terrible reviews on line.

I'd be grateful for any advice/help from you folks as I've never been steered wrong.

I had a Cisco router that never would work right with all of our Apple devices. I updated firmware, and that still didn't help. Had to power cycle it all the time to get everything working.

Finally gave up and bought a Belkin and everything works great. Belkin N450. Got it at WalMart for $50.

I agree wuith iowagirl regarding Cisco router - we had one that was absolutely worthless. Love the Netgear WNDR 3400 - works with the MacBook Pro, a Windows XP netbook, and a desktop Windows 7 pc.

This is one of those situations where there is a lot of compatibility of equipment even when they use different standards. Basically, here are the main things to know: 1) You need one, and only one, wireless router. An N router is probably the best choice for you, and would typically be backwards compatible with older technologies. It will handle your computer connections, printer connections, and other wireless systems, if you have any, like game players, or streaming video boxes like Roku players. 2) If you want the old Dell to connect wirelessly, it would likely need to have a wireless card added to one of the slots...not very expensive. Or you could continue to have it connected with an Ethernet cable to the new router. 3) You will need one computer hooked up by Ethernet cable to the new router to set up your system. Then it can be disconnected and used wirelessly afterwards if you want. 4) Your printer should be compatible with your router, and that varies among printers. If you have an N router, it would also likely interface fine with a b/g standard as well as N printer.

owbist and genes: I'll give both of your suggestions a try and provide some feedback later. damccoy: Most of my scheduled tasks are set to run around 3am, but occasionally I'm logged on when something is being updated and things do run a bit sluggish because of that. The stuff I'm describing is quite a bit different in that it's more than just slower; I actually have to close out and start over. IE is the only browser I use. And I think the answer to your third question is no, if only because I don't understand what that is and therefore probably don't have it. Of course, I consider myself one of the "technically-challenged". Thanks to all for your help!

We recently finished our basement and made it into both a family room/playroom and an office down there for dh, who works full time from home. We had room for a closet under the basement steps, so we wired the closet with a full out network panel, cable, phone, etc then we hardwired network jacks throughout the basement. Now the modem/router/printer/fax sit in the closet and all the PC's (hubby has several, plus the kids have them in the playroom and oh yeah, our Tivo is hooked up to the network as well) are hardwired to network jacks throughout the basement. Any pc's we need upstairs (my laptop for instance) can print or access the network via wireless. It's not a practical solution if you're working with an existing room (I LOVE allison's - that's brilliant!!!) but if you're remodeling or installing wiring, the "command center closet" is definitely the way to go.

Higgins: I'm glad you like CCCleaner. I feel better about using it than IOBIT, as I used it more than once several years ago. It has probably changed in the meantime, but will probably feel somewhat familiar. Yes, I understand that I can only stop things from starting up when I uncheck them in msconfig. There are times when that is necessary--from my point of view, if not that of the developers. Bugspop: Hopefully, hubby and I will not be dealing with Windows 10 until it is unavoidable in 2020, but knowing the evil day will inevitably come (I hate the colors and prefer icons to the rectangles in the "metro" look. [I realize they are not calling it that anymore, but don't know what adjective to use.]); so I have been collecting hints and articles on managing Win10. Your hint will be useful. Thanks!

I have used Linksys, Netgear and Dlink with good results.

As you appear to have nothing wireless now I would urge you to make sure it is an 'n' designation which is the most current I believe. Don't let them talk you into a 'g' because it might be cheaper. That way you are prepared when you decide to go with anything that needs a wi-fi connection.

I've used various models of Linksys and Belkin over the years and both have been fine. If you get one from Costco, return will be easy if you have a problem. Alternatively, just go with something on Amazon that gets mainly positive reviews.

I added a Linksys E1200 Wireless-N Router 7 months ago, the first router I've ever had. The installation was unbelievably easy.

It's probably available in your local stores at $50-55, or you can get it from Amazon for $30. There are over 1000 reviews of it on Amazon, a large majority of them positive.

Thanks all. I really appreciate your input.

I'm leaning towards the Belkin N600 Wireless Dual Band router. I currently own a Belkin and have never had any trouble with it, so figure I'll stick with what I'm happy with.

The downside is all of the reviews without fail mention how bad tech support is no matter what brand you get. I wonder when companies are going to wise up and realize that is one reason folks don't buy their equipment.
