I have that problem every once in a while, except only for the Volume, the Safely Add/Remove is always there. I Googled and found the solution Mikie mentioned, for the Volume. It works, for a while, then the V button is gone again. System Restore always said no changes had been made. I've found that rather than going through the Options, a cold reboot will usually work. About the Safely A/R button: does anyone ever use it? DA, I remember from 'way back when there was a thread about that Invisible line. I think I found it then, but never have since then. donnas ... Virus program you might want to make sure the program itself is upgraded to latest version. And then keep the virus definitions updated daily.. should be ok for a while.. how long of a while would be strictly a wild guess. edit; Here is a list of anti-virus programs and their estimated end of life dates with xp .. at MajorGeeks site Personally if I had an XP computer, I don't think I would feel comfortable with online banking or bill paying or anything that might affect monies in the future. hald ... you can manually download and install 8.1-update1. Might save you from downloading it twice,,, once on each computer. See the link below. You need to make sure you have KB2919442 installed first.. before installing the about 700mb KB2919355, after that's installed run windows update again and it will offer about a 200mb custom version of the 355 to finish it off with all the other kb's built in it. zep516..I went to MY COMPUTER and the USB Flash Drive was not listed .....so.....I inserted the USB Flash Drive into my laptop and then I went to MY COMPUTER and it was listed so I clicked eject and then I removed the Flash drive.......I think that did the trick. The games you have to do to fix a silly problem. It was annoying hear that ta da ta da....Thank you so very much for the info......everyone .....

yes it will only stop the sp3 from showing up till the time period of the sp3 blocker runs out then it will likely show up again, the blocker only last for a certain amount of time. All other updates will appear as normal and the icon will appear to inform you. You can always go to the windows update website and see what you have blocked and unblock them from there too. You can block IE 7 from there also if not wanting it prior to getting sp3.
