DVD data disks missing data after burning

I have been plagued with this problem.

I use Roxio 6 on XP home.

I create a data DVD in Easy CD and DVD Creater,

I burn it to disk, yet not all files end up on the disk.

I'm always carefull to stay inside the total disk size.

I thought the problem was with my DVD burner,

so I went out and bought a new LG DVD+/-R/RW CDR drive

The listing on the left is the source files.

The listing on the left is the data DVD.

Notice the difference in the size of that one folder.

Over half the files in the folder didn't go on the disk.

I have tried using Maxell DVD+R disks, and Verbatim DVD+R disks.

I burn at 4x, the only speed it will let me choose.

The disks are 8x and 16x blank disks.

This time it was only one folder. I have had most of the

files destined for the disk not show up after the burn.

What could be causing this. And how can I fix it.

This is where editing a post would be very helpful.
That should have read:

The listing on the left is the source files.
The listing on the right is the data DVD.

Or top then bottom as I see them on my screen.

One possible issue

When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost. This may occur if one or both of the following conditions exist:

A file is added to the disc, and the name of the file is the same as the name of a folder that was already on the disk.

-or-
A folder is added to the disc, and the name of the folder is the same as the name of a file that was already on the disk.

CDs are used for storage but executable files can be ran from them - all you programs are loaded via the CD/DVD. Yes, all files burned to CD become read only and if you copy any back to your hard drive you will need to change the name if you intend to modify the file. I know nothing about re-writable CDs but I would suggest you erase everything when wiping it. Do not apologise for asking seemingly basic questions, asking is learning.

I think you're wasting your time burning dvds. They're physically unstable, slow, bulky, and prone to failure when inserted into a drive. I just took a quick look on New Egg. A 128 gig Patriot thumb drive (a decent brand) is $48. You can have your pick of 500 gig USB drives (Toshiba, Seagate or WD) for under $60. Get one of one, one of the other, and know that you have plenty of capacity and security for many years into the future. You want another free backup copy? Maybe you've already done this, but if you have more than one PC in the house, put a copy of your stuff on the other one's hard drive. Most people have unused space on their hard drives. Edit to add PS: If you want to join the ranks of the backup paranoid (like me), never have more than one back up copy plugged in or actively being used at the same time. One power surge could take out all copies of the entire collection. Where I live, we almost never have lightning and few real power surges. Still, I don't take any chances. I am going out of what's left of my mind... Rechecked the connections all is OK on that front. Tried to install drivers from miniCD that came with enclosure, but they were for Windows 98 only. Light does come on for enclosure when powered up. My computer sees a USB mass storage unit attached as it tells me this device would run better with a USB 2.00 port.(I have l.0, I guess) Device Mgr.says this device is there and working properly but it will not show up on "My Computer" to be accessed. I even went into DOS prompt and at random typed in various drive letters and after G:(CDRW) nothing clicked in..and I got up to the letter R:!! Just got bright idea...I am going to Nexstar website for clues...thanks for your input...keep it coming...bye for now.

You may need a codec pk. which allows playback in diff codes..here's a free one

The disks I am starting with are new and blank.

I may look for an updated driver.
The drive came with some disks but
I just let Windows install a driver for it.

PB, my friend,

Get the free application Isobuster. I have used it several times to locate "hidden" or "lost" files on a disk, and repair a bad disk. It is a little complex so a practice run or two with a non-important disc is suggested. Even after previous use I still declare myself a novice with it.

I solved this problem by switching to Nero Burning Rom.
I contacted my local computer shop where I bought the new
DVD drive and asked him about it. He had included some disks
with the drive and one of them was Nero.

This solved this problem and the problem with screen resolution.

Version 6 is a very old version of Roxio, and it sounds as if it just isn't up to the task. I don't know the latest version, but I found version 9 for a very cheap price.

However, you are lucky to have the Nero Burning program, which I understand is very good. I'd just get rid of the old Roxio program.
