Yes it is true that someone sells PCs with Win 7 and if you were to google...windows 7 for sale...you would get many answers including the link below. However, since you've already bought a Win 8 laptop I suggest you google this instead....make win 8 like win 7........and you just might be able to solve your problem instead of buying another computer.

I believe the better known add-on to give W8 a retro look is "Classic Shell" (the name similarity is not unintentional, the second one to come to the scene chose a name to enable being confused with the first). I can't comment if one is better than the other but both are from sources wholly independent of Microsoft.

Classic shell is nice and not from ms either the link I provided is reccomended by microsoft, yes indeed it is...classic shell ask's for donations this one does not. Your choice both are fine.

wait until after the 2nd tuesday of april and run & install all the windows updates... you might find you have some changes more to your liking. win8.1 update 1 comes out then.

I tried several searches for the Microsoft site and came up dry. Could you provide a link to the page on the Microsoft website where the company (not someone in a forum) recommends these two add-ons?

It would surprise me to see Microsoft pushing users to a third party approach when they themselves are putting one out. But, could be.

Sooner or later you will have to figure out how to use Win8...or something even more advanced. Just because it is a new operating system that you are not used to doesn't mean you can't understand it. Invest $15 in a Windows8 for Dummies book, and you won't have to jump through hoops to get your new machine working fine for you. This is exactly what I've done in the past, and there is no shame in using this approach.

Well, kudzu9, I hear you. I have been also contemplating switching from w8 to another o/s like an android or apple tablet/pc. After all, if I am going to go thru this relearning hassle, why not try apple for example? It does not have MS Office but maybe Office files can be made to run in an apple environment. Ditto for Android.

I doubt I will do the Classic Start W8 but thanks. I simply cannot do anything or find anything on W8 so this will not cut it. I am not sure how to even turn off the PC; have not been able to find the Games (Solitaire, etc) that there used to be; the programs list; there is no Explorer anymore; man, I cannot even turn off programs once I start them; cannot find a favorites in IE; the list is long; I basically press the power button on the pc now to "turn off" programs; then I power back up and log back on to continue. If this is what MS wanted to do, it works but is not what they claimed would be an easy change with everything working so differently.

I hear you...but have you actually tried reading anything, or are you just moving around intuitively hoping to find what you're looking for? Yes, you're frustrated, but you're thinking of abandoning a new computer, and/or learning to use a different operating system because you are frustrated that you don't understand a newer version of a Windows OS? What makes you think that you will be happier with a totally different OS or that it will be easier to learn? It sounds to me like 15 minutes with a manual, like one of the Dummies books, would solve all of the problems finding stuff that you just described.

Luis, it is possible to buy a new computer with Windows 7. I just did so a month ago. I ordered directly from the HP Home and Home and Office Store. I don't know if they still have such available. You might also try Dell.

At the HP site, click on "Desktops and Laptops". It shows at least one desktop model with Windows 8 OR other operating system.

What I did my last computer was buy one of their "Combo deals", added an SSD, wireless keyboard/mouse, my own amp/speakers, my 42" Sony Bravia, installed LInux Lite, and am really happy with it. Cheap(incrementally) and runs circles around my old boxes. I'm certainly not saying you'd want to go that route, just illustrating that there are other routes. :)

No, I am not suggesting you erase the hard drive and install Win 7. If you ever bother to read the link you might learn that there are things you can do to make Win 8 look and function like Win 7.

Beyond that though, anyone who has to turn the computer off because they can't be bothered to learn how to close a program is just wasting their time venting their frustration on an internet forum. If you HAVE TO use a computer, I suggest you employ a computer tech and pay them to set it up for you. Alternatively, you could pay someone to fix your XP machine since it seems you were happy with it. If you are so eager to run out and pay money for something else, I predict you will be just as unhappy as you are now.

Luis, I understand your problem, the thing I don't understand is why you dismiss Classic Shell. When I bought my Acer W 8 laptop/tablet convertible, I had to Google just to find out how to turn the thing off. I had heard about Classic Shell in this forum and I downloaded it right away it was enough like W 7 that I did not have a problem with anything. I bought my first PC in 1996 and bought a new one every time a new system came out, just to learn it and be up to date. I don't like W8 and there is no crime in not liking it or not using it as long as there is another way. I don't think MS is exactly happy with it either. After I downloaded and installed CS I could easily find my way around. The only thing I don't like is the msconfig start up menu, but I can live with that.

As a senior citizen I don't like change at all so last year when I needed to get a new laptop I went to a local computer store in my area and they were able to build me a new one with W7. Yes some things were a challenge and I'm still learning to get around, but I do like it now after several months. Well I also needed a new desktop to do photo work on so I talked to the techs at Office Max and was able to bring home a W8.1. They installed the update for me and set it up to go directly to a "desktop" with icons and no login!! Still have to use the "Pane View" to locate programs and services, but atleast when I turn it on it looks familiar. I hit an arrow and I'm back to the normal desktop!
Still lots to get use to, but I'm loving the 24" screen to work on photos and I was able to install all my older photo programs too. If an Old Lady can figure it out anyone can ;o)

Good for you msm84, I don't usually mind most changes, to me it is a challenge which I enjoy and I love the feeling I get when I accomplish my goal. W 7 was the hardest OS to adjust to (before W 8), but when I got it set up, I found it was as good as XP if not better. As an example..... I really missed the quick launch bar and did not like the one I was told I could make. I kept googling until I found a way to make my own quick launch with folders. I went to documents, made a folder for my game shortcuts and one for my tools then added them to the task bar by left clicking on the TB, then new tool bars and follow the path to my 2 folders and added them to the task bar.

I am an old lady puter guru to many, many in senior chat rooms, and I have installed classic shell for a few on their W8 PC's and they love it! yes, they still screw up and get into trouble, and then I fix it again, I do remotes and work for Free, I have 5 PC's online in my home 3W7's/ 1 W8 and 1 android tablet, takes me about 5mins to figure out a new OS, but even I installed a classic 8 on my new W8. and as advised by other PC techs including mine from HP, I will not be upgrading to 8.1 it is not advised.

To turn off a program in W8, press the 5th button from the left (the "X" in the box) in the top row of keys.

When you press the "power" button to shut your machine off, that is just a short term power off. To get to the controls for longer shutdown, press the Windows window button (3rd button from left in bottom key row) and the letter "c" at the same time. Then click on the "Settings" icon, click the "Power" icon, and click the kind of closedown you want.

The right panel you get up when you do the above can also help you to do many other things; just play with it a bit. The "Search" space at the very top can help you find just about anything regarding your computer that you want, if you can remember the name for it.

There is a sort of traditional Start page (minus Start button) you can get by using the X I mentioned above. You should find the Explorer "e" on there somewhere.

There is probably a W8 manual online somewhere; the documentation that comes with the new computers has almost nothing.

I didn't like all the memory-draining videos that seem unavoidable when being directed to the Microsoft home page, so I went to Google and downloaded their Chrome browser, which is what I am using right now.

Good luck--it is quite an adjustment, but the changes make sense, sort of, after you get used to them.
