Monitor problem

I have an old Dell AS 501 monitor and use it with my new HP tower and WIndows 7. All was well until today. I used the computer this morning, then turned off the monitor and let the tower power down. This afternoon I returned to the computer and turned on the monitor and "woke" the tower. Since that time all the monitor does is display this message:

DELL
1: Analog Input
Self Test Feature Check

followed by red, green, blue and white bars.
I have changed batteries in my Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard and don't know what else to do. The info box moves slowly arounf the screen and I can't make it go away. I have turned off and restarted both the computer and monitor. I am now using my netbook and my network appears to be working correctly.

Please, does anyone have suggestions to get me out of this problem?

Silly! But make sure It's plugged in. Stuff Happens :)

This MESSAGE box also appears during normal system operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.

Yes it appears as though the signal cable is not properly connected to either the computer or the monitor.

Laura1, I have very bad eye sight even with glasses and contacts, so I know how to make fonts larger! First off, if your screen isn't filling the entire screen, look at the upper right corner where you see a minus, double squares, and an X. Click the double squares and it will restore the screen to full size. Then look on the tool bar for "page" and then select "font" and then click "largest". My DH also put a "zoom" on our bottom tool bar so I can just click on it to make the words even bigger. These things all make reading Garden Web so much easier! Linda Leaf

Posting this as a follow up just for informational purposes. The problem seemed to be that for some reason there are two video adapters and two monitors (both identical) that show up in the device manager. Why? I have no idea. If I uninstall the "extra" set, they just re-appear. If I simply disable them, they stay disabled and I do not experience the blurry display. I spent months trying to track down the problem as I just had a gut feeling that the problem was not with the LCD display itself- I upgraded drivers, downgraded drivers, etc. I am not sure what made me notice the two entries in the Device Manager, but I think I have solved my problem.

No mike, I just pressed on it and the system failed. I have tried all in the manual owbist sent me a link for. All without success. I'm taking it back to where I bought it so they can sort it out. The screen was getting darker and darker and both brightness and contrast were on the max 100 so maybe I have a dud for it not quite 6 months old. Thank to you and owbist for your assistance. Thanks for your suggestion, Joe, but when I go to step 3 to right-click on Windows Internet Explorer, it's not there on the list. I've searched the web about this and others have had the same problem. I have searched my computer and can't find it anywhere. It's like they (Microsoft) have found a secret hidey-hole to store it in. Even my son looked around and couldn't find it. (He's a lot more computer savvy than I am.) Believe me I have spent mega time on this. I went to the Microsoft website and tried the fix-it link and nothing happened, either.
