pc sleeps, wont wake well, has to be restarted. intermittent

Might anyone have any idea what is going on? We have a laptop that runs windows 7. Mostly it works perfectly, but every now and then it sleeps. Then when you jiggle the mouse to wake it, it wakes then immediately goes back to sleep. This repeats until the mouse pointer is moved to restart. Once the pc is restarted from the restart button, all is well until the next time. This is an intermittent problem. The pc may also be restarted by using the on/off button.

I would try disabling all power saver and sleep modes to see if that stops it.

maybe Run a command prompt elevated with administrator rights and type in:
PowerCfg /Energy

Pay attention to the name and where the html output file is saved. Copy that file to your desktop then open it. It will give you hints about sleep mode problems. Maybe you spot whats wrong.

go to control panel Power Options in the settings area change the settings to never for all the power saver options never hibernate never sleep etc. save the settings. Restart the pc see if that helps. Also since you have a new power cord and are not using any type of power strip try plugging it into a totally different outlet one that preferably is not on the same circuit that the other outlet was on. Also you need to do a sequenced power down and power up. to do that shut down your pc, unplug the power from the router and the modem, leave it off for at least 5 minutes. Then power up in this sequence. Power up the modem let it get fully lit up, power up the router let it get fully lit up, then last power up the pc. often times a full sequence of power up and down will flush it out and refresh so that things work better. You probably know this but the power buttons are usually "programmable" so to speak. They can either be set to "Put to sleep" or "Power off" when pressed. I've seen it where they're set to "Put to sleep", and I've thought the computer was off, but it was actually in Sleep mode, and came right out of sleep when pressed again. I have to remember to hold the Pwr button down for 4 seconds to make it actually power off. That the monitor won't come out of sleep is a little mysterious but somehow telling - but of what I'm not totally sure. It needs to get a signal from the mobo, but the mobo needs to get power from the PSU. So which one is causing the problem ? Hard to say. What if you use the Linux live cd, and choose "Restart" - will it then restart ? But that would only rule out some kind of problem with your Windows OS, and we're not thinking that's the problem anyway. The thing about putting a drive in a new computer, is that the mass storage drivers are loaded very early on, and that's what a "universal restore" feature is made to handle. All the other hardware will probably be identified in the boot process, and if the necessary drivers are not found, you can install them later. But there's usually no easy way to do that for the mass storage drivers as it just won't boot to the point that you would have an option to supply the correct ones. If you want to install Win7 on a different machine, there is a tricky way to capture all the Win7 install boot info necessary, even though it's an OEM install for that particular machine. I can give you the links if you're interested. I had to do it, although it was on the same machine I think, but a fresh install. It was a situation where I had a laptop with no install disks, and had to use a generic Windows install disk. Yeh, the live Linux distros are fun. I just made a little bootable MicroSD flash gizmo with Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint, Pupply, and Knoppix, plus a whole bunch of other utility cds using a multiboot builder called Sardu. It really works well - boots anything on the MicroSD easily. Sardu Multiboot Creator Very handy, and gave one to my nephew as well.

Every once in a while my computer will just close down and restart? Do you ever see the hint of a flashing blue screen? Some computers are set to automatically restart after a blue screen. The blue screen can fly by without seeing it. There is an option to disable auto restart on system crash (Blue screen) so you can read the blue screen, but I think it's a lot easier to just run Whocrashed We should verify if it's blue screening first by running a simple program called whocrashed. Lets see if we can see what's causing the [color=blue]Blue Screen[/color] Download Whocrashed from here-> http://www.resplendence.com/downloads This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash.... Click on the file you just downloaded and run it. 1 Put a tick in [b]Accept[/b] then click on next. 2 Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next. 3 Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon. Then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish. 4 Click Analyze. It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes. WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it. Copy and paste it into your next reply. Also Windows logs most events, so you may look in you event log for other clues. Sueb20 - I hear ya girlfriend! This hormonal rollercoaster is not for sissies. On a good night I was sleeping maybe 4 broken up hours. I never nap during the day. I have always been an insomniac, but could sleep five hours straight before, now since menopause (5 years) I am plagued by hot flashes that give me sweats then chills. I use BI hormones and these help to a degree but do not completely alleviate. I don't know if my flashes and chills are worse than others but I do know, if I don't use BI, I literally cannot go out in public. Sweat pours off my face and I actually passed out at the office once. So... Then before the holidays I started to have a real problem period sleeping and tried all the OTC remedies and my usual melatonin/valerian cocktail and was getting no where. I cannot take script meds. Then I decided to move to the guestroom because I was waking my DH with my tossing/turning, up to BR etc. For a month I guess I went through a sort of sleep detox and reset my patterns- I've had to do this before. Went a couple nights where I got may be two hours sleep but now am where I can sleep maybe four hours, then wake for a flash but don't need to get up for a BR visit, then can go back to sleep for a couple more hours. This is revolutionary for me. I believe my DH was keeping me (he snores) from actually getting into a sound REM and I would get up, wake completely read and have to restart the process and never get more than 3-4 broken hours. We talked about it yesterday and he thinks he is sleeping better too without me there. So he's getting 9 hours of undisturbed sleep instead of 8...I hate him ;) So my recommendation get an hormonal evaluation have them check your cortisol levels (saliva test) too. Get on some hormones. Lack of sleep is worse for your health than taking hormones. The devise that helps me the most for cooling during sleep is a small vinyl covered pad I bought in a heating pad combo that is used for icing an injury. I just keep it next to my pillow and when I have a flash I pull it over to lay my face and neck on. It is cool enough without refrigeration to do the trick. I turn it over a time or two to a cool spot till the flash passes. I have cooling pillows and jammies etc but this one little thing has helped me the most. That and moving out of the bedroom... Also Arianna Huffington has a sleep book out - has any one checked to see what she's come up with?

I find that giving the space bar a tap before running the mouse in a slow circle wakes things up faster.

As mentioned, go into Control Panel (power settings) using the dropdown arrows beside each setting...change all the full power settings to read NEVER...Battery settings should be somewhat more limited because you don't want the battery to completely drain

Power management is passe. Since the arrival of XP, and having CRT monitors go the way of the dinosaur it is not anything special. Screen burn has been resolved, and the monetary savings are negligible.

Never has long been the recommendation.

Windows 8 defaults to everything sleep , meaning the power button, 30 minutes of inactivity, close lid on laptops. If sleep is 180 minutes it switches to hibernate.
Even when you use the win8 ShutDown click, default is a hybrid hibernate. Actually hard to turn off the power for a full shutdown.

They required new windows computers to be certified windows ready to fully wake from sleep in less than 2 seconds. My laptop was win7 and since I installed the win8 upgrade.. wake from sleep is instant. I love the sleep mode. No waiting to see the desktop, no waiting 2 minutes once the desktop is painted for all the processes to finish loading, no waiting for the hard drive to quit spinning - everything is ready ready to go with a mouse wiggle and the couple blinks to spin up the hard drive the first time it needs to read or write.

I'd be unhappy without a sleep mode if I had to wait to use my computer when I wanted to search something quickly, like how to tell when to flip a pancake.

DA, I thought you were a law enforcement guy? Enabling monitor off and a switch to standby or hibernate following some short period of inactivity (and then requiring a password to get back on) is a standard security practice in the workplace. This prevent unauthorized access or use. It's similarly a good idea for personally owned PCs if you use your laptop out in public.

Enabling display off after a few minutes of non-use, for a laptop running on batteries, can significantly extend the length of a battery-only session.

Me??? Think what you may as I cannot speak to it.

On this thread no one has brought up the concept of work environment so that perspective was not addressed.

My home system is on 24/7. It has a collage of pictures of my grandchildren as a screen saver for my pleasure. For no other reason. No type of power management is used.

In the past, the consensus of members here was they only use power management in the hopes of protecting the system to make it last longer.

During my entire attendance at work my system is engaged even when not attended. It is the secured database portals which time me out after inactivity unless I do it manually.

I have never seen anyone leave a laptop unattended in public. My recollection is they are actively being used, directly monitored, or shut down and stored. In any of these cases power management is not necessary.

Finally, there are only two schools of thought that are certain for all; death and that politicians waste taxpayer money.
