Laptop will not boot

When I boot my Windows 7 laptop, I see a screen that says, "To interrupt normal Windows startup, press enter". When I don't press enter, it goes to a blank screen with a cursor in the upper left corner - nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. What to do????

If mine, as soon as I saw the first signs of live on the display I would push and hold in the power button for maybe 5 seconds - which will cause a hardware reset.

Then if still no go... I would be tapping the F8 key to try to get to the special Startup menu... Then choose startup repair.

If you cant get to the startup menu you need to know how to boot from DVD, which a few ways on mine.. One is maybe F2 or F10, or F11.. I forget quickly after power up. Another way is Ctrl + C or Ctrl + D quickly after power on. To boot off a Windows7 repair disc, or windows 7 install disc DVD, to get to its StartUp repair function.

If you don't have a win7 install dvd or startup repair dvd disc, you can make a StartUp Repair disc/DVD/CD off of another win7 computer with same matching bits. . x64 or 32 bit.

Thank you for the response Mikie. Holding the power button didn't work. However, hitting the enter key took me to the Safe Mode option page. I chose open Windows Normally, and Windows fixed itself.

With out knowing the history of the computer we would all be guessing at what may be wrong it could be anything and probably needs major repair more then likely that's why it was left behind.. You could take the battery out & only use the ac adapter if you have it and see what happens, this thing may have been dropped it is really hard to give you any sort of direction here...

yes and it is often very easy to turn it off by mistake. on my netbook it is a little slider button at the very front edge right where I often grab it and in doing so slide it to off. Look for the little symbol that looks like a satelite dish sort of. Also depending on how old it is it may not have a wireless connection card in it which you can take care of easily. Tell us the model of the laptop. Have you hooked it up to your connection using a wire to make sure you can connect that way and it is not some other problem? If not do that right away. and give us more info on the type of connections you have and the specs on the laptop including the OS.

I had a similar problem with that update, it caused one of my PCs to freeze up and then not reboot correctly. It happens from time to time that an update can cause a hiccup. I don't know enough about it to know why. In my case, it just needed a "kick" - a safe mode reboot. I made no update setting changes, the PC proceeded with the update install and all is well. You might try doing that, and more than once if necessary, the problem should pass.

That's a good question. I was using a Dell Inspiron 4000 w/ windows 2000 professional and before that a Compaq latitude (I think) also with Win2000 professional. The compaq had a lot of the typical corporate stuff on it, like outlook, office, etc. Both of these computers took at least 3 minutes to get up and running, despite turning off apps from start-up, periodically running antivirus, ad-aware, etc., and also defragging and running disc-clean-up. Based on all this, and also through conversations with strangers on their laptops (in places like Panera, starbucks, etc.) I thought that a couple minutes was typical. If I could get the Inspiron to boot in less than a minute I would keep it. But right now it's too aggravating to use. Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated.
