Email address hacked

Apparently my email address has been hacked & I'm being inundated w/ messages of mail being returned as undeliverable, mainly from email sent to German addresses, altho a few are from other European countries.

Any way to interrupt this flood, other than blocking & sending to spam?

Microsoft Outlook 2010. Can't change the address; too many other problems if I do:(

These kinds of situations are not easily remedied. What happens is that the phisher gets to your address list and starts sending messages that look like they're from you, advertising their stuff. Once they get it, there's little you or anyone can do, short of closing down the email account. Free email accounts seem to be the most vulnerable, with yahoo topping the list.

I received a request for money from a "cousin" that said he was in Houston and wanted me to send him money. I ignored it, and to this day, I don't know if it was real or not. LOL I had no contact with him from childhood, and only rarely then, until a few years ago after I made contact with his sister-in-law, the wife of his deceased twin. He mostly worked overseas, and he was obviously a heavy drinker and liked to call me to talk about family when he was three sheets to the wind. One day he called just to tell me he had found out I was Mormon (like that was a secret), and how he felt about that. Well, you can attack me on a lot of battlesfields, but if you're going to try that one you better bring a big gun and be armoured up. LOL He would call about once a month for a couple of years. The last conversation, he said he had cancer and asked me to prayer for him. (Who, me, a Mormon?) Of course I did. When the msg came, there was no explanation, nor anything to indicate that it was really him. My husband said, "Send it if you want to". I said, "Not in this lifetime". I still don't know. Was it him? Did he really need help? Did he die and some one got the info from an obit or on-line. It wasn't his normal way of contacting me and he wanted the money sent Western Union to an address I had never heard of. Although he lived in Texas, I don't think he lived in Houston at the time. Who can you believe? Maybe very few!!

This email looked like any other I would get from a friend. That's the problem, nothing suspicious at all about it and I'm always pretty alert having been trained by the very best in the business. It was not spam, it was much worse than that. The purpose was "phishing" to collect personal information and target us for fraud.

It's always possible that the person was just 'spoofing' your friend's address (i.e. using his/her own account to send an email as if from your friend. But to be on the safe side, in case it truly was a hacker -- or is it 'cracker' ? -- your friend needs to change her account's password and double-check other email settings (alternate email address, any changes in forwarding addresses, security question, etc.). Other things might be possible depending on what her email service is. Afterwards, it should be safe to open her emails. She could always take one other precaution: slightly change her 'from' name (and inform her contacts) so that from now on those receiving emails from her can be on their guard. E.g. if emails from her usually say, from "Mary Jones," she could change it to say "Mary R. Jones." That way anyone getting an email 'from' "Mary Jones" will know it's not genuine. :-)

Do you use Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com, AOL? Outlook 2010 may be the client you use to manage your email, but you can check and/or modify settings at your actual provider's site to help with things. You may, for example, be able to check past activity and see if/when an unfamiliar IP address was used to login to your account. You should also check to see if settings have changed (a new forwarding address added? a new filter added? an alternate email or cell phone number added/changed? Etc.).

But at the same time it's not necessarily the case that your account has been hacked. If all you're getting is 'email undeliverable' kinds of emails, it's possible that your email address was merely spoofed by some spammer, which doesn't require their having access to your account. When the emails couldn't reach their intended recipients for whatever reasons, they were returned to the spoofed/fake address used to send them: yours. If this is the case, it might just be a brief inundation of email which will quickly subside once all the undeliverables are 'returned' to you. In the meantime, you could create a temporary filter at your webmail site telling it to delete all emails with a return to sender type subject. Other than that, I don't think there's anything to do to stop the flood. :-(

Time to check for malware and viruses. The hijacking of an Outlook addressbook has been a reoccurring concern for as long as I can remember.
