Questions re Windows 8

I have my eye on a very nice desktop computer with Windows 8.1. I have checked my printer and flatbed scanner for compatibility. Seems the scanner is compatible if I download and install the driver for Windows 7 (64) and install it in "compatibility mode". Question: what is compatibility mode and does it limit any functions of the scanner? The second question makes the first one moot, if the answer is as simple as it seems. There are 3 hard drive bays in the computer. Could I remove the hard drive from my present XP and install it in one of the bays on the new computer? If so, could I then access it just as I would a USB drive, that is, via a drive letter assigned by Windows? If so, could I then use the scanner as installed on the XP drive?

Hope this makes sense, since this idea just occurred to me last night.
