High-res capable scanner

12 years ago I completed first round of scanning/archiving old family photos. Good job but that equipment long-gone.

Ready for another round upon discovery of previously unknown photo-trove.

Seeking advice for purchase of new scanner capable of high quality/resolution scanning/preservation of these old photos. Not particularly price-sensitive. Just want high quality. Speed would be nice, too.

Computer is late-model iMac.

Take a look at Epson's V700 and V750 scanners, they're well regarded.

I have always assumed most scanners offer various settings for resolution. I generally scan to create a 3 to 5 megabyte file so that photo repairs or editing can be done with a reasonable chance of success.

My current scanner, an HP Scanjet 4890, accepts multiple photos and scans each individually as long as a quarter inch separation is maintained but again I think many modern scanners offer this neat feature.

Mark until my latest scanner I nave never owned an expensive one. I bought one for about $100 many years ago after I had a couple of scans done at a local store. At $10 for one scan and $8 for others done at the same time I reasoned I only needed to do 12 scans and I was in pocket. Others have commented here on scanning slides with success. When I did it the machine (borrowed) was quite old and the results were reasonable at best. Be sure to practise well before the final scans. I had 14 reels of 120 slides to scan so there was little enjoyment and each needed about 3 minutes to complete the input and scan. My current scanner is an HP Scanjet 4890 which at the time of purchase was about $300 Canadian but it was given to me by my daughter who decided she had no use for it :~) Previously I had a Canon and one other probably a Visioneer since they have been around seemingly forever.

When choosing a high resolution scanner, look for ones with the most robust drive for the scanning head. The scanning head often is driven by a stepper motor, thus the drive motion is not smooth, but a series of jerks. If the scanner head is not well supported, its induced vibration will reduce its capability to produce sharp pixels. A shaking scanner head can not produce fine detail. Over 10 years ago, I bought an HP flat bed scanner. Its scanner head slides on large polished rods and the drive belt was more robust than other offerings at that time. It has performed well and I still use it. I wish that updated software and drivers were available for it.

Hi, X Glad you are back. I played with your new graph a bit and still can't make it work for me with the DR at the top. Disadvantages: 1. Go through kitchen to reach dead end DR. 2. Not enough clearance around table. 3. I would find the room, even with the windows, enclosed feeling. I do still like Lavender Lass's sketch. But it seems to me that you would not often use the keeping room. Again, you have to walk through the kitchen to reach a dead end space. But it is charming. So I went back to my first plan and played a bit. Yes, I KNOW you don't want a prep sink. I just can't design this iteration of the kitchen without it. So convenient to the DR table and Fireplace sitting area for drinks. So nice for prepping on the island. But that's OK. Go ahead. Ignore me. No prep sink. See if I care. ;o( Considerations: 1. The island is wide--3 feet. Not needed for space, but it seemed to me to ''want'' to be that wide. I wish mine were! 2. I didn't put seating at the island because you have seating so handy at the corner window seat, DR table and the Fireplace seating. 3. This assumes you will eat all meals at the DR table. Not sure if that is your plan. 4. Not sure of your DR table size. This shows 4 x 6 feet, which is a bit tight in the area around it. Suggestion: Have the fireplace chairs on wheels so they can be slid around easily as needed. Anyway, a slightly different arrangement to add to your growing pile of considerations. Okay, a completely different approach that I should have thought of before.... Have you ever used the free software Team Viewer? It allows remote access to a PC and works as if the person in the remote location were sitting in front of the PC in another location being operated. Think of the old Client/Server model. The server portion of Team Viewer is installed on the PC to be manipulated remotely - call it the Mac. Client software is installed on the PC where the user is seated - call it the Windows machine. When the server software is first installed, there's a code presented. When the client software starts up on the Win PC, by entering the Mac's pass code, a connection is made from the Win PC to the Mac over the network or over the internet and the person at the Win PC can use the Mac as if they were in the same room. End the session and the connection is broken. It may be hard under the circumstances (you're not where the Mac is) to get this set up the first time if you think you need to be there but it's certainly possible. Get it set up next time you're home so that if another time when you're gone, should other issues befall the Mac or the Mac user, you could connect and try to fix them from wherever you are.

owbist, that model wasn't too well rated by PC Mag. It's an oldie too.

OP was asking for a high res one without price sensitivity, maybe my observation is higher than what was desired.

Ah, Snidely the beauty of this scanner was the fact it was free :~)

The sad part is HP refuse to allow it to be installed on my Windows 8 confuser. I have recently acquired (also free and a neat looking machine) a Shuttle computer with XP on. Slower than molasses but capable for the job as I have a few more photos needing scanning.

I have an older model Epson, the Perfection 3170, which has the capability of scanning negatives and slides. I bought it directly from Epson (refurbished) at a very good price. I still have not scanned the negatives and slides I bought it for, and now the latest drivers available are for Windows 7. I did find out that it can be installed in "compatibility mode" on Windows 8. I've been waffling about a new computer and finally had myself convinced to go ahead with Windows 8. Now, I'm not so sure of what to do. I should have done this job several years ago, and life is getting away from me. I'm sure I'll leave this life with lots of unfinished projects.

Can someone explain whether "compatibility mode" would limit any functions of the scanner if installed on Windows 8?

I've read some rumors of Windows 9 making an appearance by Christmas time this year. Anyone with any knowledge of this? This just adds to my confusion.

The Canon CanoScan 9000F works really well. Unfortunately, they have raised the price a lot. I got mine a year ago for $140, and now they are $400, but you can see that it gets excellent reviews. There is also a newer model called the CanoScan 9000F MKII, which is more reasonably priced at about $170; it gets good reviews, but I don't know how it compares to the original.
