Messed up my desktop...need help

| I just now tried to add a shortcut to my desktop and ended up with a white square in the left hand corner...for the life of me, I can't get rid of it. I tried a system restore, but the restore option had been turned of...maybe during an update. Could someplease help?

| What operating system? Can you turn System Restore back on. You need to that first. When you right click the Icon to delete it, what is the exact error message. Remember that's just a short cut the real program lives in the Program files folder. |

| XP Professional...sorry I forgot that....I turned system restore back on...I get no error message....I get this white square up in the left hand corner...the shortcut isn't the problem...it's this big white square underneath the first six of them |

it might have affected the picture you are using for your wallpaper try choosing a new wallpaper and see if that square goes away. also check your wallpaper settings to see how it is set to portray your wallpaper. It is better to get an actual wallpaper that is sized for your monitor resolution, this site will automatically determine your proper size, once you select a wallpaper click on it to go to the download page there you will see where it says your resolution is and has the number, for example mine is 1280x1024 where you see that click on that number and it will automatically size it for your screen then right click on the sized image and save it to your pc, then go to your wallpaper area and browse to that saved file and select it as your wallpaper. That way we can see just what is happening.

| I figured it out...had to go through a panic period first.... It was a setting on customizing the desktop At least I found out system restore was turned off...so that is back on again Thank you both for your help |

| As you had not knowingly turned off the system restore you might consider running a full scan with Malwarebytes or similar. One never knows these days and running a scan can offer peace of mind. |

| I agree with owbist several of the infections do turn off system restore upon infection so update your malwarebytes and run a full scan. |

| I scanned yesterday with Microsoft Security Essentials and just now with Malwarebytes and they both came up clean... |
