Laptop won't hook up to wireless network

(Windows XP) (IE8) We have a Dell Laptop with NETGEAR wireless adapter. We're trying to hook it up to the desktop computer that has a Linksys Wireless Router. We had everything hooked up and it worked well for a while, but then we started having to unplug the router and plug it back it to get the connection. We removed the NETGEAR program from the laptop and reloaded it. Now we can't hook up to the wireless connection at all. When the NETGEAR program is trying to hook up we get "WPS prodecure timeout. Failed to Connect to Network." Our notebook hooks up just fine. Any suggestions?

The laptop is 9 years old, but the netbook is new. Could that be a problem?

The label says it has 512 MB of memory. I'm not sure which memory this is referring to, but if it is the RAM on the motherboard, it could use an upgrade. Windows XP likes to have 2 Gigabyte (2 GB) or more. You are using a wireless router on a DSL sevice. Make sure that your wireless router is secured so that someone else within range can't horn in and ride piggyback on your connection for free. The more computers using the connection, the slower it gets for any one computer. The next potential bottle neck is the DSL service. If this is over a phone line, it may not be a large jump in speed over a standard dial-up service. A good connection does have marked improvement in speed, but a troublesome connection looses much speed advantge. Consider taking the computer to a shop or friend and try on their lines. Another problem, if over a phone line, is a noisy line. Thw phone company can test your phone line for quality. Make sure that you tell the technicam that this line will be used for internet service. If over a phone line, another bottleneck can be the phone company. It may not have installed equipemnt capable of high speed data transfer. If you have a friend who has a high speed cable connection with a wireless router, you may want to try your computer on his connection. Have the computer checked out at a computer shop to discover if it is the computer or the DSL service to your house.

The desktop probably has a wired network card that is currently connected to the DSL Modem (GT701). Disconnect that. The GT701 hooks up to the phone line. The TEW-633GR connects to the GT701 by a network cable. Connect the WAN port on the TEW-633GR to the connection on the GT701 where the desktop used to connect. Connect the desktop to one of the LAN ports on the TEW-633GR. There should be some sort of setup for the TEW-633GR. I don't know the exact steps you'll need to take, but there's probably a setup routine in the manual you can follow. I would suggest that you do the following: Change the SSID on the TEW-633GR Change the admin password on the TEW-633GR (and make a note of it) Set up the TEW-633GR to use encryption, preferably WPA set up the wireless on the laptop to use the same WPA settings as the TEW-633GR I've done this a lot, so some of these things seem simple to me and I've probably skipped steps. Do you know the brand name of the router and model # in case we need it. If he had the router set up in his home the router should have retained the settings that he had. Unplugging it does not cause these settings to be lost. So go ahead a connect it. Also, can my aunt somehow still have her own laptop connected to the modem by the cable (i.e. "wired") while the other laptop outside uses the wireless router ? Yes that's how I do it here. Remember her connection will come from the router port, right now I would think she is connected directly to the Modem. You will need 1 cable to connect the Modem to the router any Ethernet cable will do.You will pull her cable out of the modem and plug it into 1 of the available router ports. You may have to go through a power down sequence of the modem an router, then verify she can connect by going to www.Google.com. Then see if he can connect too on the wireless signal.

The age might be a problem: networking can be a pain sometimes and some components don't always work reliably with others. I'm wondering, though if it's your router starting to go out. I've had several fail on me, and the result was erratic behavior and lots of re-boots.

try a full power down of everything I do mean everything. Power off the computers, the router, the modem etc. leave all power off for 5 mins or so, then power up in this order, power to modem only let it get fully lit up, then power on to router, let it get fully lit up, then power up your computers letting each get fully loaded. Then try to connect to your wireless, I assume you have put in your wireless network passphrase for the laptops that are trying to access the wifi network.

Powering down didn't do any good. Looks like we're getting a new router. Thanks for the help!

If one computer connects and the other doesn't why is it the router?

What I might suggest, is turn off the wireless security on the router. See if the laptop connects then. If it does, then there's something off in the security settings.

There's also the possibility that the combination of the Netgear adapter and the old laptop isn't entirely compatible with the router.

My experience has been that it's usually the security settings that cause the problem. At least it's a starting point for troubleshooting.

If the netbook is accessing the network, it seems to indicate the router is functioning. If there is a compatibility issue, I'm not sure that blindly buying a new router is the best course of action. Perhaps it's the Netgear adapter? How old is this thing?

To the original poster, what is model number of Netgear adapter?
