Do We Need Windows 8

I have an email offering me to upgrade from my Vista to Windows 8Pro for $39.99. Do we need to upgrade? I have heard people that have upgraded there systems to the likes of Windows 7 say it isn't as compatible as when you buy a new laptop with Windows 7 installed. I don't know if this is correct and I don't know if I need to upgrade or if this is just a marketing deal. My email also said "Streaming" is free for 6 mo and after free for 10hr/mo or through subscription. I don't even know what streaming is. My laptop is 4 years old.

I just use my laptop for internet and visiting my cyber friends through blogs.
Just wondering what good advice you can give us small time computer users.

If the computer you are using NOW does what YOU NEED then no, you don't have to upgrade. Vista still has a few years of life left in it. If your needs do not change, probably better to wait until you NEED a new computer and then get one with the latest version of Windows.

I bought a new computer a few months ago and can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.95 if I upgrade by the end of the month. I don't plan on upgrading. I just don't want to spend that much time learning a new operating system, especially one as different as Windows 8.

At 8' by 8', the frame becomes less of a visibility issue give the expansiveness of the glass. At that size, most manufacturers are going to know where their windows/doors can live comfortably. I am not sure that you will find something with that minimalist frame that also meets the minimalist cost range. Here is an 8' by 8' sliding glass door in an Okna 8800 series slider frame. This SGD has what is considered a "French" rail on it so it runs on the thicker side of those that are out there.

What size shutters do we need for the two outer windows?

If you do the shutters they'll not be able to be the width of one of the windows (they would be so wide that they wouldn't look right). I would use some cardboard cut in different widths to find one that looks right. With larger columns, and more of them, and landscaping I don't know that the shutters add that much. I would go with plantings to cover the downspouts. If you try to paint them then you end up with two colors of guttering and I just don't think that would look good. To me guttering is more an extension of the trim and should be the same color as the trim (unless it is a different material, like copper). When you do the plantings, I would fill in the area inside the sidewalk with plants and mulch. In order I would do: 1) Columns. 2) Larger window trim. 3) Landscaping. You could also paint the front door a brighter color to make it more of a focal point. It's kind of lost being gray and in the shadows.

I wish it weren't so large, but being a brick house, I guess we're stuck with it. Is it possible to match the brick? If not, one idea (I've never done this) would be to install a smaller window and flank it with shutters to cover the fill-in. Add a flower box to the bottom if you want a shorter window. This would be totally acceptable to me IF the window in question faces the backyard. Would work streetside, too, if you have shutters on other windows. Another make-do approach might be to install a smaller window and add a Bahama shutter to cover the original window opening... Yes, I would get a different window. This one has failed & it would be reasonable to assume the next one will fail eventually, too. Plus, your stated wish to have an operating window for ventilation. ETA that this leaky window almost certainly doesn't match the rest of the windows in the house anyway. [That it doesn't match the other windows helps make the case for a make do (adding shutters, window boxes, etc.) or whatever else you can come up with regarding smaller window/ adding a shower...]

Its the same as win7. Added some candy for the touch screeners, tablets & pad & platter computers. But its one click to desktop.
Not a whole lot of difference from win7 after that one click. Has some new math I need to learn though,,,, (and Microsoft mouse has bad handwriting)

Thanks to Mickie's tip a few days ago about the price increased on Feb 1 I bought it. Downloaded and burned to DVD as an .iso ready to install. This will be a clean install rather than update or upgrade on my second computer.

I had played with the free trial version a year ago but really did not give it a fair testing so I removed it.

After reading these messages my cheapo gene kicked in. $14.95 now $200 later. So I bought it. I keep things backed up pretty good so I was ready to do a clean install. I burned the iso to disk, inserted it and got to the point of entering the product key. I didn't work so I backed up and entered it again same result. I opened the email thanking me for ordering it and copied it and pasted it in the installer. Still didn't work so I called MS support. They couldn't help but escalated my call to the next level. But they had closed for the day and I have to call back tomorrow.

Wow, that is a PIA Bob. I did wonder when downloading if I would be given the option to burn my own .iso and was pleasantly pleased when I found I could do it.

Installed the program today, ow the irritating part of learning the differences and trying to personalise it to my liking.
