Excel/Word won't open

I have a 4-month old HP desktop running Windows 7. It came with Excel Starter 2010 and Word Starter 2010. When I imported some XP (with service Pak 3) Word and Excel files from Works 2000 into the new computer, it put them in the starter programs. Both the imported and new files have been working ok.

Today I got messages for both programs that they cannot be opened. I've run the trouble shooting programs, tried restore and cussed a little. Nothing helped.

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks for any help.

Take a look at this Microsoft link for your information re compatibility mode.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Owbist. I am familiar with the concept of compatibility. Most of that article dealt with checking your open document for its compatibility, etc. I can't even get the program open, never mind checking the documents inside.

I'm also puzzled why something would work for several months then develop a glitch suddenly.

Well this plant kept growing and blooming beautifully until 2-3 weeks ago I noticed I wasn't seeing any open blooms again, and a lot of yellowing leaves. Since it had recovered so nicely this spring after being inside all winter, it didn't get repotted. Sure enough, look what was going on in the pot! Usually I repot as soon as I bring a plant home, but didn't do this one, at all yet. It's the worst root-bound plant I've seen in a LONG TIME, and a clear reminder of why I stopped using peat. When I chopped the root ball in half with a shovel, there were no roots on the inside at all. Literally none. I'm not terribly squeamish about such things but pulling the plastic thing out of the mushy, rotting roots was unpleasant (but I don't think a tiny amount of peat will bother my veggie patch more than the rotted roots would help, so wanted to keep that.) My hands got too dirty to take any more pics but I wiggled and pulled all of that peat away from the middle, then removed most of the roots that were around the outside edge. It fit easily back into the same pot, the hardest part was getting the hanging thing off and back on. I'm so glad I didn't try fertilizing again or letting it go bone dry for longer periods. No more "it looks fine so I'm not going to repot that this year" for me. If it's been a year, out of the pot it comes. At least I know I'll find a pot FULL of roots next year, not a clot of empty peat. And Toni, I did end up developing an affection for that Amaryllis and have moved it to the front yard where it can be seen next year (and not laid on by a great dane!)

Melissa, Are you saying your columns don't normally have "headers," and that you would simply sort by "column A," "Column B," etc.? If so, just uncheck the box in the sort command that says to use column headers. If you do have column headers, are they just words in row 1? e.g., do the words "class," "name," etc. actually appear there?

Thanks for this really excellent advice, wildbirds! I did some research and am going to deadhead these seed pods. I hope I can get some more blooms! I followed your suggestion on a file saved to my system and the file did not have the "read only" box checked, but when I open it ... it defaults to "file viewer" mode. When I try the same action on a file sent to me, selection of properties does not show the check boxes for read only, etc.

Was it a trial version of Office? Is there a possibility that the trial expired?

@pkponder, some new computers come with a starter version of office which is what the op has. It does everything an average of word or excel would need but not all the bells and whistles. As far as I know it does not expire. My wife's computer came with it and it looked OK to me but I had a newer version of Office for her so installed it.

Office Starter 2010 is not a trial; it is pre-installed by computer manufacture and it will not expire. Office Starter consists of Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 only, reduced functionality versions of Microsoft Word and Excel with advertising.

The best option is to try a repair or reinstall of Office Starter 2010.

That is interesting that MS has now started giving away Word and Excel, so far I have heard no complaints over the advertising that is supposed to be there either.

I might suggest that those with Office 2010 starter go to Microsoft and download the free Powerpoint Viewer so they can enjoy some excellent Powerpoint shows that pass around in emails.

The uninstall did the trick, Zep. Thanks.

At one point I got a numerical error and Googled it. Turns out this is a known flaw with lots of complaints - saw some in French and German. One poster gave a phone number for Microsoft to have them fix it. Since the uninstall worked, I did not pursue that.
