Cannot move or delete file!!??

During the time I spent on the Analysis and Malware Removal forum over at LandsDown, posting back and forth to Corrine, I had a shortcut on the desktop to the Analysis and Malware Removal page.

When we cleared up the malware problem that I had, I decided to move the shortcut into a file where I keep a few other shortcuts to different sites that interest me or I visit regularly. No problem there, the shortcut I had to Analysis and Malware moved from the desktop into the file by clicking on it and sliding it into the file.

Today I decided just to delete the shortcut to the Analysis and Malware Removal site altogether.

This however proved not so easy to do!

When I try to move or delete the shortcut, a box appears on the screen and notifies me that :-

File access denied.

You need permission to perform this action.

You need permission from the owner-PC/owner to make changes to this file.

File: Analysis and removal.

Rating. Unrated.

Try Again Cancel.

Is there anyway that I can remove this shortcut?

It is not doing anything wrong or eating anything, it just bugs me that I cannot move it or delete it.

Try renaming it. I had something similar happen on a url I didn't rename when I saved it. Name it something shorter then try to delete it. Are you trying to delete directly from the browser or in documents & settings / your user name

If you can get Windows98 to start in the "safe" mode (pressing the F8 key as mentioned above), open the "recycle bin and look to see if the deleted files are there. They should be if these have not been removed from the recycle bin. If the files are there, merely highlight the file and click on "restore". This will put the file back from whence it came unless you have deleted certain part of the operating system. However, if you deleted files using the old DOS commands, I'm not sure what happens. They may be gone. In any event, you could re-install Windows. I've had to to do that a few times back when I had Win98 SE. Before reinstalling, copy down all of your browser settings. You may loose these on an re-install. It doesn't happen every time, but it is a good practice just in case. I'm not sure what happens to the Windows updates upon a re-install. If you are lucky, Windows will recognize the update copies on the drive and install these. If this does not happen, the next time you go in-line, the Windows updater may begin, or ask to begin downloading a bunch of updates, and this can be a lengthy process over a 'dail-up' connection. Of course, you are aware that MicroSoft stopped supporting Window98 and there will be no new updates save the ones already available. If your equipment is suitable for Windows XP, I recommend moving up to that operating system. It's much better that Win98. One caution, however: Make sure that you have plenty of disk space be you begin the upgrade. A big mess is created if XP fails to finish loading due to not enough disk space. Read the requirements carefully. Upgrading to XP requires a huge temporary file during the upgrade, much larger than one might imagine. Also, a large amount of space is neded to store the old system if the option to retain 'retore old system' is chosen. If your disks are formatted for FAT 16 bit, convert up to at least 32 bit FAT. BUT WAIT! If you need to run old DOS programs, find out how to set this up under XP before you convert. That may be more trouble than its worth. It would be best if you could move away from these if possible. I've had no problem with older software written for Win95/98 when run under XP. I do have an expensive old DOS based finite element analysis program that I can no longer run with XP. If I find that I really need to run this program (for consulting purposes), I'll refresh an old computer and install Win98 SE and this program on it.

If you are positive that is the offending file use Windows Explorer. Right click Start click Explore. Scroll down the left side and click the plus sign beside Windows. Now scroll down and click on the System32 folder. Your unwanted file should now show in the right pane on your screen. Personally I would rename at first rather than remove it. Just change the DLL to DDD so it cannot run or be recognised by the computer. Then later once you are convinced everything is normal you can return and remove the file.

The only thing I can think of is to run chdsk, on the drive here's how, Start-->Run-->cmd Type in the following: CHKDSK C: /F > C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT (note: substitute "CHKDSK C" for your drive letter) Hit your Enter key. Click YES on the popup to reboot. After CHKDSK has run type this in Start : Run... C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT Notepad will open to allow you to view the results of Check Disk

Right click run as admin you must have admin rights to make changes

DA, I don't log in, but as far as I know I'm "Owner/PC"

Ravencajun, there is no "Run as administrator" selection in the box that a right click brings up when I right click on the shortcut.

Justme4now, I downloaded that program and it goes into WinRAR but I have no idea where it goes or what to do with it after that?

I also should mention that this shortcut doesn't even act as a shortcut any more!
When I click on it as you would to operate a normal shortcut, a box comes up with another message:-

"The target** of this Internet shortcut is not valid.
Go to the Internet shortcut property sheet and make sure the target is correct"

Where or what is an Internet shortcut property sheet??
And how does one get there?

I don't know how I got myself into this one???

It is not a shortcut to a program but to a website which is why it says internet shortcut. Have you tried just dragging it and dropping it into the recycle bin?

Easiest way to rid of it is change security on it,, but for you maybe simplier to just start in safe mode. Then you can delete it.. it thinks its a system protected file.

Raven, it will not Drag....Open....Delete...or allow me to rename! Any action I attempt is answered by one of the messages I mentioned in my earlier posts.
It seems that it is an "Immovable Object".....!!!!

Mikie, I tried removing it in SAFE MODE and got the same results. The pop up boxes appear on the screen with the same messages!

If you have MalwareBytes, start it up.. go to tool, File Assassin .... browse to the desktop, browse to the shortcut.

Mikie, you are a prince among mere mortals!

Using your instructions, the stuck shortcut has gone into cyber-land.
That little bugger was bugging the "H" out of me, by defying every tactic I used to get rid of it and MalwareBytes File Assassin did the trick lickety split!
Your suggested method of removal, is something I will note down, just in case it maybe required again in the future.

Wow! Thanks for your post, Horton, and thanks, Mikie, for your solution. I had never studied Malwarebytes well enough to use the File Assassin. Good to know that this "kills" unwanted files.

Haven't heard that in at least 60 years. My father said that when he was young and he died 30 years ago age 92.
