Is the page COMPLETELY blank? Is there an address bar visible, perhaps with an address or error message or something in the normal address field?

Considering the popup for Google email...sounds like malware to me which means all bets are off trying to guess what your first problem is. If you have Malwarebytes I would do a full scan ASAP. If you don't have Malwarebytes...get it.

Have my home page back. Had to write it in as Xfinity. But, the hated popup from google mail is still here every few minutes.

I do have Malwarebytes and did a scan and nothing was found. I am now doing a scan with antispyware. I am wondering if the Firefox update and new blank sign in page was from a false site. The popup says it's from https: // mail.google.com and it won't stop , flashing now every minute. It has a blank and wants my name and email login. As I said, I do not use google mail.
I am writing this on my iPad to avoid the desktop and let the scan finish.

Are there two tabs open, maybe one from gmail? Has your computer been restarted since Firefox updated? When Firefox is closed, is the gmail authentication popup still appearing?

You're in Firefox (FF) and all of a sudden you get a login pop up from [ https: // mail.google.com ] ??

I'm assuming you mean w/o the spaces :
[ https://mail.google.com ]

There must be something triggering this.
Perhaps check your addons and extensions to see if one of them involves Gmail.
Also check your History to see what's been linked to.

and pkponder's questions :

We're trying to figure out if it's FF related and if so, how.

I stayed up half the night trying to get rid of the popup and think it did indeed come with the update ( maybe corrupted) from Firefox. I think it's is gone and yes, it only happened when using the Firefox browser. I used google help and they said that popup did not originate at Google. I use "Scotty" , use Malwarebytes and super antispyware, but most likely should run them more often. The desktop is not often on now since getting the iPad, so that is a problem too , with less frequent updating.

I updated Firefox yesterday too and it is all blank for me too. None of my settings/add ons etc. are working. Not a happy camper. I'm seeing pop up adds for the first time on Garden Web and none of my bookmarks work either.

Sounds like Mozilla broke things...I also had issues (improper rendering) with the last update.
I'm posting from Chrome.

I tried uninstalling and then installing the last version before the update. Firefox would not open. Tried using system restore and that didn't work either. Mozilla definitely broke things...

My Firefox broke some time last year - I moved to Safari, then that 'broke' too & now I'm on Chrome as well - just could not get FF or Safari to work @ all. Using an older OS, which I think may be the common denominator here.

I imported all my bookmarks to Chrome & that's about all I needed, tho Chrome does work differently & took a bit of getting used to.

I'm on Mac OS 10.7.5 - for whatever that's worth.....

do you have adblock or adblock plus? If so, it might be blocking something in the update....try checking your settings and disabling it on the mozilla home page and restarting. Or try telling it to block the pop-up.

It might be something incompatible until adblock does their own update.

My FF often freezes (firefox not responding). I use Chrome regularly and have also just installed Opera which I think I'm going to like quite well.

As I recall, I had to download/install a newer version of Adblock Plus following the last Firefox update. Sometimes the add ons are no longer compatible and need to be reinstalled using a compatible add on.

I'm sorry for those of you that struggle with the updates.

I don't even give it a thought, I just expect to need to reconfigure after updates and take it in stride.

Historically the upgrade version of FF will review the add-ons from the prior install for compatibility during install. When finding any not compliant it will then provide an opportunity to check for updated add-ons.

ABP released an upgrade v2.6.7 earlier this month, through the FF's add-on update utility.

I did have ad block plus, I've been messing with Firefox for hours now. Still don't have it where I want it. It is working at the moment though.

My last update with FF caused freezing and problems loading email, etc. I also switched to Chrome. I'd been a FF user for many years.

Is there a safe place to update firefox ? I really prefer this browser but am now afraid to update it.

Always get Firefox directly from Mozilla

Also, look into MozBackup and keep a current profile- I keep one in my Dropbox and one on a flash drive. I try and back up once a week when I do my banking backups.
If you somehow lose everything you can restore your profile to exactly the way you want it.
MozBackup has saved me several times over the years.

I support using author's websites. However, as an alternative Major Geeks and Filehippo are fine. Regardless where you download from be on your toes for piggy-backed applications.
