XP Windows upgrade to 32-Bit Windows 7

RE: Dell Dimension DXP051, Intel(R), Pentium(R)D CPU 2.80GHz 2.79 GHz, 512 MB of RAM 3/25/2010 2.00 GB of RAM, Windows XP

I checked and found out that my Dell computer can be upgraded to Windows 7. It is compatible to Windows 7.
I've been very happy running Word 2002 in Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my Dell DXPO51. I am about to buy Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit to upgrade my Dell desktop before April 2014.
I have some styles and macros in Word 2002 that I'd like to be able to use on the new computer. I also want to avoid as much as possible any time on a learning curve with respect to commands, etc. So I'd like to install Word 2002 on the computer. I've looked in this forum and elsewhere, and can't find a definitive answer, so I thought I'd ask again:

Will Word 2002 work on my Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit computer?
Would it be advisable to install it in compatibility mode?
Will Word 2002 styles work in Windows 7?
Word 2002 Macros?
If I need to get a new version of Word, I'd like to avoid Word 10, since it apparently is very different from Word 2002 insofar as commands, etc. So my last question is:
Which version of Word is closest to Word 2002 in commands, etc that will still work ok in Windows 7?

I think you have insufficient RAM for Win 7. Also, I question the wisdom of spending money to upgrade a PC that's at least several years old.

You're using very old software and from your descriptions it's working fine for you. Why do you think a different approach is needed with the operating system?

I agree.

Up Grades can turn into an issue especially with an older machine. Up Grades copy files over, leaving old files, registry entries, drivers behind, These are the machines that come into the forums with issues that no one can quite figure out.

It is truly unfortunate that you or any member have concerns with their systems, particularly after upgrading the O/S. However, this happens time and time again where the euphoria of anticipation is doused by the rain of reality when a new O/S is released and user upgrades follow. Not all systems, all software or all peripherals will work as we know it, if at all, when an O/S upgrade is completed. For those who did the double jump from XP to W7 the trepidation is even greater. I personally have been recommending Vista users not to upgrade as I feel it is a waste of money due to the major duplicity of Vista and W7. If members are thinking that compatibility issues have been "fun" in the past wait until the release of W8. It will be a 128-bit O/S. DA

there are ways to make vista more like xp you need to search google for "make vista like xp" you will find lots of tips and tricks. There are some threads here on GW that have posted several links to many of those so you can try doing a search here too. More memory is good but at some point there is a diminishing return on the investment and that point is a function of what you are doing with your computer. Things like first person shooter games, video editing, photo editing (of very large files) all benefit from lots of memory. Writing an email to Aunt Betty doesn't require very much memory at all because the computer can process information far faster than you can type. Same thing for the Internet, your computer can render pages faster than your connection can supply the information. So if you have a slow internet connection, you're not likely to experience much, if any improvement. With that said, 4 gigs is probably a pretty good number. If you really want a WOW factor, get a solid state drive and use that for your O/S and critical applications. To try and answer some of your questions: - Windows doesn't care about the physical drive or any logical partitions. It does make good sense to install Windows 7 on the newer, faster drive. You'll get the best performance that way. When it comes time to get rid of XP, everything will be on one drive and that, if nothing else, should help you keep things mentally organized. - My understanding is that you have two physical drives, one with a functioning version of XP and the other blank. If that is not correct, say so NOW. - When you go to install Windows 7, it will recognize that there is another operating system (Windows XP) already installed. Windows 7 won't do anything to XP other than to set up the dual boot. Essentially it's computer language that says, "XP is there, Windows 7 is here, which one do you want to use?" - Logical partitions to a drive a largely a function of personal preference. Understand that it is more difficult (but not impossible) to non-destructively repartition a drive after you put data on it. If you, for example, have a partition for music, another for videos, and a third for pictures and find down the road that you have a lot more videos than music, it becomes more difficult to rearrange things. My suggestion is a single, large partition and use folders to organize your data.

Support has been, or will be dropped for all versions of XP except for service pack 3. However, XP remains my favorite windows version. My wife moved to Vista on her laptop and hated it. She now has Windows 7 and says it is an improvement over Vista. Some day, I plan to move to Windows 7 and skip Vista. This requires a complete clean out of the system - reformat of the disk. I dread that move, and expect some applications and hardware will no longer be compatible. If certain applications become incompatible, I'll resist the move as long as I can. These would be applications that are too expensive for me as a retiree to replace. I have an old finite element analysis program that is no longer compatible. To buy a new version is $16,000 the last time I priced it, so that will not be done unless I land a consulting job that needs it and can pay for it - not likely in my remaining life. If you are having difficulty in finding your pictures, use the "Find" command to search your hard drive. If your disk has been subdivided into logical drives, you may have to search each logical drive. The find comamnd does not need the entire name of the file to find it, just part of the name will do. It will, of course, list all files matching the same fragment. For example, if you searched for all occurences of *.jpg, you'll get every file having extension " jpg", not necessarily an efficent thing to do. Suppose you have the followiong files: 1998 Joey 1.tif 1998 Joey 2.jpg 2000 Joey 1.doc You could locate all these files by searching on "joey" and very likely would not get many extraenous hits. File names that contined the string, joey, would also appear such as jumpjoey.tif . Recommendation: In the future, create folders with meaningful names in which to store your images. That way, you'll know where they are. Folder names such as: Vacation Jun 2000 Year 2001 pic Year 2002 pic 110Canon 111Canon are examples. Tip: Its a good idea when you set up a new computer to set aside a data drive for documnets and images. If you have one hard drive, a logical drive could be created on it. You would have 2 logical drives: one for the system files and the other for your personal files. I have 2 physical hard drives in my computer which becomes a natural thing to do. This separates your data from the system and application disk, and makes for more efficient use fo the "Find" command. On first pass, you need to search only the data drive, and if not found there, search the other drives. System and application files are humungous these days and requires much needless search time.

When you speak of upgrading "my Dell computer", you're not speaking of installing an upgrade over top of XP are you? If so, I misunderstand, so disregard the rest of my post. :)

So I'm assuming you intend to purchase a retail version of Windows 7 and do a clean install. In the first line of your post you mention 512 MB of RAM, a date, and then 2.00 GB of RAM. Does that mean it now has 2.00 GB of RAM or maybe 2 1/2 GB of RAM? Either way, I'm no expert but I'd think 512 MB is less than enough, but either 2 or 2 1/2 GB would be fine.

I don't know much about Office, but wasn't Office 2003 was the last version that had the old style menu, before the newfangled ribbon came along.

According to this, your Office 2002 would not be compatible but according to this, Office 2003 would be.

Would your 2002 macros work in 2003? I don't know.

Would it be worth the expense of buying a retail version of Windows 7, as well as Office 2003(or at least Word)? To me, probably not, to you, only you can decide.

Personally, since it works, I'd probably just continue using it.

Continue running a good real-time AV, occasionally scanning with a couple on-demand malware tools(Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware come to mind), use Firefox or Chrome(lie detected), using the WOT add-on(trusting it somewhat less than fully), and being careful what I open(email) and what I install.

Just my opinion though.

Snidely...I have enough RAM...2.0 GB of RAM. Why? Thought I had to update it because it was XP and it was not going to be supported after 4/2014

I have a lap top with Windows Vista.....and a Desktop with Windows 7.0 Home, and Windows Desktop with XP...and my favorite computer to work on is my Windows XP.....so in the meantime I will be a sticking with XP and be a cautious user. Thank you all! You helped me make a decision.

If you're willing to consider a new OS, even XP to Windows 7 has some learning to undertake, consider a Linux update, Xubuntu is a candidate that would run even without upgrading your RAM, but upgrading RAM to 1 GB minimum 2 GB should be even better even with Xubuntu (I speculate based on the fact more RAM is always better in Windows),

I'm new on the subject but have dual boot loaded Ubuntu on a W7 Starter Netbook and it seems to work fine, one can even port over user information such as personal folders and bookmarks and the like from Thunderbird and Firefox, respectively. No not a typo, there are several versions of Ubuntu, the "X" version is a scaled down (my terminology) version for use on older machines.

My interest was driven by a totally crapped up XP on a Dell Desk Top which does have 1GB RAM. I haven't yet tried to put Xubuntu on the Dell yet, just haven't set aside the hour or so such an effort will likely lead too.. but I can trial by not installing Xubuntu, just running in trail mode from a DVD, and will make a priority if you are interested.

My expectations given the XP Media OS now on the Dell is very sick is the Xubuntu will be a lot better. Ubuntu is also active and updated on (different for different versions). The current version is 14.04 See:

Note this is an 18 month old thread.

When a PC is so overloaded with garbage that performance is hindered, and when top performance-improving software doesn't help, wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS (Windows in the instance you cite) will similarly give a fresh start.

On the other hand, if XP is the latest version you have, reinstalling it probably isn't worth the effort and indeed maybe a Linux conversion makes sense. The problem many find in doing that is that oftentimes their favorite programs are incompatible and unavailable for Linux machines. As mentioned in another recent thread, there can be driver problems sometimes too. When making a conversion, it's best to do a trial run first (a reversible way) as you describe with a Live CD.
