iCloud storage

This is similar to a previously posted message but is a little more pointed to a single problem.

I keep getting messages that my iCloud storage is nearly out of space. Today's message is that I have used 4.8 GB of the 5 GB available.

My only 2 Apple products are an iPhone 6+ and an iPad (don't know version, but it is old!)

I have signed on to iCloud/com from my PC but there is little or nothing there. The only thing with content is "Contacts." I have 250 contacts, hardly enough to use 4.8 GB.

I have moved all photos from my iPhone to Photobucket (that was a chore! Somehow there were 2 and 3 copies of most photos) and deleted the photos from my iPhone.

How do I see what is causing me to use so much space on iCloud? How do I clean it out?

Have you looked through all the categories when you are in iCloud? Is it possible you have had music or movies on one or both devices that got automatically stored in iCloud? Is there a lot on your phone or your iPad that is getting automatically re-stored in iCloud after you delete it from iCloud? Is it possible you have two iCloud accounts since you have two Apple devices that have quite different ages?

If you still can't figure this out, I am sure a call to Apple Customer Service or an appointment at an Apple Store will help resolve it.

kudzu, thanks for responding. My own personal tech guy, a/k/a DSIL, finally figured it out. Or at least figured out how to stop it. Most of the storage used was from my old iPhone, probably from when AT&T transferred stuff from old phone to new phone. We've deleted that and freed up TONS of space.

All along, I thought it was photos creating the problem. It wasn't.

I knew it wasn't music or movies since I have never downloaded either to the phone. I'm so tech-not-savvy, that I use my phone as a phone, a camera, and for a little online surfing.

Thank you all for the input. I can't really tell the difference between the iPad Air and the iPad Air 2 but I want 128GB and it's only available on the Air2. Marlene the global positioning causes the iPad to right itself. You can lock it so it doesn't turn by going into settings. Go to general on the left side and put a check behind lock rotation. This will enable you to use the slider switch on the edge of the right side to lock it so it doesn't do that. You can also turn the cellular data off in settings. Click on the left side where it says cellular. Then the top right will say cellular and if it's enabled the slide switch is green. If you slide the switch to the left it will turn off the cellular. You will still be able to use wifi but the cellular data (the data that you pay for) will be turned off. If you want to turn it back on just slide the switch to the right. Marlene, don't feel challenged as there is a definite learning curve. The fact that you have one is great. If you bought it from the Apple Store they have a great tech staff and I think they have classes. Another thing you can do if you can't figure something out is to go to google and type you question in i.e. what do I do if my iPad freezes? You will usually find a step by step process that will help you. I discovered this as I had an text that had a Christmas surprise that I didn't want anyone to see so I googled how do I delete a text message on my iPhone. I followed the directions and voila the text was gone!

The first 5GB is free. Once you fill it up you have to delete stuff to make room, or you need to pay for a larger storage capacity. Apple will not charge you for more storage unless you specifically choose to upgrade. iCloud holds your backups, your contacts, etc., but these are usually minor in size compared to your photos. You can go to iCloud to delete your photos or you can just do it on your device and the iCloud storage will mirror this as long as you have a wifi connection. How to manage iCloud

luis, here are a couple of options to think about: - At least for now, T-Mobile offers for tablets a data-only SIM and 200 MB of data free every month. That's not much data at all, but you could purchase more if you wanted to. The big caveat is if T-Mobile has adequate service at the assisted-living facility. Their network is getting better all the time, but coverage can be an issue outside of large metropolitan areas. - AT&T offers data-only pay-as-you-go plans. My wife uses a plan on her tablet that is something like $25 for 1 GB (or maybe 2 GB; the iPad isn't here at the moment). Use it all in a day? Buy another one. Otherwise you can refill up to 90 days after. - The T-Mobile option requires an unlocked tablet. So do some others. Nowadays, though, there's just no reason to buy a tablet locked to any carrier. - There are features on the tablet (whichever one you buy) which you can switch off to preserve data. Your mother probably will not need a Maps application polling periodically for updates. My wife and I each have smartphones and we've shut off "remote data" for hungry apps. For instance, we don't allow app-store purchases with cellular data; we wait till we're home on Wi-Fi for that. Both of us get by on less than 500 MB of cellular data per month. And that amount of data plus way more than enough talk and text for us costs us (together) $40 on Consumer Cellular. My wife's iPad is separate, but that's not much money per month for the times she wants to find something and she's not near Wi-Fi. Granted, that may not be an option for your mother, unless you visit once in a while and take her someplace with Wi-Fi. :-) But it is possible, with limitations. And some money.

Thanks once again. The app is not just a grocery app, it is a list app. I have multiple lists in the app. For example, itineraries, packing lists for various climates, wonderful, thorough lists for both spirits and wine, gifts, sizes of various people, makeup, books to read, movies to watch, wineries to visit, a variety of stores (both grocery and clothing), Thanksgiving timelines for getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner and one for Christmas and one for New Year's, to-do lists, over-the-counter medications, prescription medications and numbers info, recipes, etc. You get the picture. This is a wonderful resource and I have looked over the years trying to find one that is as productive as it, but to no avail. The company has just recently promised to update the app to the iOs 11. I hope the wait is not too long. And their faithful users have been begging them for months to please get this updated. The company has other apps that I guess are more profitable to them, so they have been concentrating on those. I think the outcry has been so genuine about this failure that the company has become embarrassed to the point of agreeing to update. I have used the app since the Palm was the thing. They used to update all the time, but then something changed. Hope they are getting back on the right, correct track now. I do appreciate the support of all of you.

k, that reminds me. I meant to include how I found the things that needed deleting. Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage. At that point, you will find the devices that are being backed up. Click on the device. The next screen will show the BackUp Options.

This is also the point where I'm not sure why certain things are being backed up, such as the flashlight app. If you want to turn off the backup. your only choice is "turnoff & delete". I don't want to delete my flashlight, but I don't think it needs to be backed up either. Opinions?

I went into the storage on my iPhone6 and have about 4.3 GB free. The things I have on are: Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Passbook, Backup, Keychain, and Find My iPhone; I have a Flashlight app, but it is not listed, nor are any other apps. I am guessing with your phone that it may simply be saving some settings for your Flashlight app and is not taking up any significant space; and, in any case, if it's backing up the whole app, it isn't taking up much space: my Flashlight app is separate from the one that is built in to the iPhone 6 and it only takes up 26 MB. If you "turnoff and delete," I doubt it will delete the app from the phone, it will just delete the backup. I can't guarantee that, but that's my guess. You could simply do the "turnoff and delete," and re-install the app if it disappeared. Or you could call Apple to see what the deal is. By the way, how much of your 5 GB is now available?

I now have 4.6 GB available. The storage hog was my old iPhone. As soon as I deleted it, the problem vanished.

I just looked on my iPad. "BackUp" is not on on the iPad. I have just turned it on. It'll be interesting to see how much storage it eats.
