Multiple websites openinng when turning on web browser

Hi, when I turn on my web browser (Mozilla Firefox), multiple sites start to come up. I must have done something when I first go this computer (Gateway). I'm running Vista. Also, when I try to do a backup I'm told that it failed every time. Anyone have an idea what is going on? Thanks, Nancy

Firefox, maybe look in its settings and Export Bookmarks. Then go download a new version at www.firefox.com before using control panel Add/Remove or Program & Features uninstall for FireFox including personal settings when it asks that question. Reboot !!! before installing your newly downloaded FireFox.

How much free space do you have on the drive you make your backups to? Or when the back up fails... does it give an error ? What's it say...

Is Firefox just reopening the same tabs you had open when you last closed it?

tig, the same thing I think was happening to me there for a while. I was having a whole lot of problems at the time though...no updated antivirus working 'all' of the time, no firewall, just lacking a lot of good protection and no way to stay on dial-up line long enough to get anything downloaded and working. I eventually got high speed, and protection and things ended up working themselves out. I like you had many pages open at once, and it would shut down...usually giving me a seconds counter counting down b4 it happened. I would just log off, well actually I usually had to press and hold the button on the tower to get away from things. Once I would turn it back on, and log on, it would ask me if I wanted to restore session, to which I replied 'yes' and all the tabs I had open previously would reopen...in time. ok, i know no one sympathizes with me on dialup but that's my life! Oh, but I can empathize...been there...done that...wanted to pull hair out and scream! There was just no other option available for an ISP at the time...so I do understand. " Are you actually reopening the browser for each site, rather than putting them on tabs? It will be quicker just opening a new tab. " Not sure what tabs means. I open a mozilla browser for 1 website and while reading there on that page I open 3 or 4 other websites. So as they load I read at the 1st then I read one of those others as I go to another site at the one I just read. follow that? Just how do you open another website? page? thread? Go to a favorite and right click on it and choose "Open in new window or open in new tab? Go to a forum, and see a message you are interested in reading and then right click on it and choose "Open in new window or open in new tab? Go to file (upper left corner) and left it to click on open new 'window' or open new tab? And then click on a favorite to open in that tab? When you have lots of pages open, does the brief header appear above or below the page you are looking at? If they are 'above' they are tabs. If they are below, they are windows. You can open several tabs in each window. Have I made any sense whatsoever? Sue...who sometimes has 5, 10, or20 'tabs' open or opening at once.

You have to keep in mind that many people with their new bigger, crisper monitors keep their settings at 1024x768. Not hard to figure what the result is when you have a table set to 800 pixels - blank space. If you use a percentage such as 100%, it will fill the screen correctly whether a person is using 800x600 or 1024x768. Without seeing the code, it's difficult to say why you were having a problem using the percentage. More than likely you had a "no break" somewhere in your text. If you are forcing the code and the computer to do something it naturally doesn't want to do, the result is a page that the text runs away on. When you started over and switched from the percentage to a pixel width, you probably inadvertingly got rid of the "no break" which solved your problem.

I've made this suggestion in the past, but I still think it's a valid one (although not to me at this point in my life). When we are on the main page of the cooking forum, there is a link for related forums. I think if "kitchens" was considered related and you could navigate back and forth with the two forums, that would make life easier for many people. Many people migrate from "kitchens" to "cooking" and still go back to give advice once their new kitchen is done. Also, I think it would be helpful if a thread indicated if anybody posted to it since you last visited. I know the new email notification helps that now, but there may be a thread that I am following but haven't added my two cents yet; however I would still like to know others' contributions. On the Pinterest/FB issue, I am totally addicted to Pinterest. I use it for many things, including recipes. However, I use a completely different identity because I don't want to connect it to FB. None of my friends or family need to know I just copy others' ideas and I'm really not that creative ;) I have posted so much personal information on here at a very difficult time in my life. I knew it would always be out there for the world, but it wasn't something my friends/family could easily stumble upon, so I was a little more free with my thoughts. I think of the conversation side of this as a place to b*tch out my sister when I'm mad at her or just cry with my cyber friends. I don't want that to link up to FB. Those are some of the people I'm b*tching about or am mad at. ;)

I use Chrome all the time, but also have FireFox as a backup. Of course IE, as well, but I never use it. Ditto! I'll share this story in case it ever happens to you or someone else: This past week I did a Windows 7 update (one of those routine updates requested by Microsoft), and when it was finished Chrome couldn't load pages for me. I learned that if I'd turned down the automatic offer to reload all my tabs, Chrome probably would have been fine. But I clicked "Restore," and then Chrome failed. I looked up the problem, and found lots of people asking about it on tech sites. Must be a common issue. I attempted several of their solutions, but couldn't figure out how to do them. Then I cam upon this easy one, and it worked! After my computer does a window's update, chrome almost never works. I can't get into settings or anything, nor can I load any web pages. I found a simple fix. Do a control-alt-delete and go into task manager. Close all chrome programs in all the tabs. Once you close all the processes, reopen chrome. It loads for me. Also, be careful NOT to restore previous tabs. Ignore the Ã¢ÂÂrestoreÃ¢ÂÂ request, and just start from scratch.

Firefox has the ability to open multiple home pages. Perhaps you added something? Is it always the same pages or do they differ?

We're going to need more information about your backup problems.

Is Firefox opening up to pages you've intentionally visited before? If not, this could be some form of virus. More info from you is needed.

My guess is that it is opening the previously open tabs from the last session, it does this by default unless you chose to de-select that option.

As to the backup failing what type of backup and where are you backing up to and what program are you using to do the backups?

sorry to take so long but have been away from the computer. Thank each of you for your thoughts.
Mikey-I went to options and changed my home page and now it only opens the one I set it to. Which is great. I thought I'd done something bad and it's been doing it awhile.

Chuggerguy- no, it's not the last ones I had open.

Kudzu-yes, it was the same ones every time.

The loading is doing fine now thanks to all of you.

-I'm just using the regular backup program that came on my computer and have never been able to get it to work from the git go. I get that the backup was not successful. could not backup for following reasons
System Restore Changed backup settings. Revised backup settings (0X810000ED) I was supposed to back up on C: Drive. Does this tell anything about what to do about the backup? I'll try to get more info if you need it but I may need you to tell me how.

have you tried to back up to an external hard drive?
you are trying to backup contents from your C drive to your C drive? is that correct?

Yes from C: to C:. I don't have an external drive. I'll do more research in couple days and come back. I'm having grandkids until Sunday.
