Can't download videos from camcorder to laptop

Hi there,

When I connected the USB cable from the camcorder to the pc, a "pop" up window was supposed to appear- it didn't. The DXG camera website said to look for a "removable" drive on my laptop. I looked and didn't see it under "my computer". Frustrated, any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

For some reason your computer is not seeing the camcorder. Did it work before? If so you might try a system restore, or even try another USB port on the laptop, also try rebooting the Laptop with the camcorder connected, that may reinstall any necessary driver.

Thanks, Zep. I did everything you said except the system restore with no luck. How do I do this? This is a brand new mini camcorder; my DVD drive is broken so I can't insert the CD that came with it. Anyway, the DXG website said I don't even have to do that. I'll try the system restore as a last resort.

Zep I had suggested downloading Avast to a thumb drive from the computer being used as I presumed it was a clean computer and not the one with corrupt files. Mlou seems unable to download onto the troubled computer. I have had to do that when trying to clean infected computers. I found Avast could clean a computer enough to allow running Superantispyware or Malwarebytes to take care of other things causing the troubles. Mlou, is your recovery program on CDs or DVDs? If it is on a partition on the hard drive you have no idea if that too is corrupt so you really would need to clean the computer first.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, Raven I want to avoid using the Norton trial and get Avast on the new laptop before I go online. I re-downloaded Avast again, to a flashdrive using my XP machine. I was able to move it onto the Vista hard drive Downloads folder. But as before, it would not install. First window shows the default language - english. Next window - There was an error while completing the setup process. View setup log. I googled the main error line from the setup log, didn't find my exact problem, but found a few posts - all Avast related and also relating to various internet connections. So maybe once I get my wireless router hooked up tomorrow (cross fingers) this will install. I don't understand why that would matter, but what do I know! My XP computer is ATT DSL wired, which I am making wireless since I now have the laptop. That in itself is/will be a real learning experience. And I will definitely check out some of the tutorials. I think I will like Vista, just feeling a little inept at the moment.

If this has just started and on 2 computers it is unlikely to be any error with your computers. Have you checked the file where the downloads get stored to see if they are coming in but the small box notifying you fails to appear? Assuming your downloaded files are in the Documents/Download file.... Right click Start, click Explore in the pop up Click the small plus sign beside Documents (My Documents?) on the left side Now look underneath Documents for Downloads Click on this to highlight and look on the right side to see if the latest downloads are listed.

Hi damccoy, Thanks so very much for responding! I was trying to download from: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_10.1_for_Windows_Internet_Explorer&p=Google_Toolbar_6.5&d=McAfee_Security_Scan_Plus&os=XP&browser=ie&type=activex I made sure it was a download for Windows XP. Made sure I had enough room to download it. I am using IE8. I only use my AOL for email because I've had it set up since 1997 and I am too lazy to go around changing my email addy with all that have it for social and business. So I wanted the flash player to load for IE8 as that's the browser I use for all my searches/internet activity. I did just recently add service pack 3 to my computer and the first time I tried to download it I had problems. That's the first time my friend told me about this site here at GW. I ended up being able to get the service pack 3 on my second try. I tried a second time with Adobe Flash 10 and then again a third time but even though I get the message box that says it's been downloaded, I see that it's nowhere in the Add/Remove section. An easy way to do this is (when the camera is off) pull out the SD card and then put it into the PC's card reader.

The card will appear as a logical drive that can be accessed from Windows Explorer. Copy the files from the card and paste them into the folder of your choice on the PC.

So the DXG camera never worked yet, if that's true there's little sense in doing a system restore, hard to believe windows would need a driver for it but it's possible and that would be located on the disk that came with it, now you may need to download software (Driver) from the site of the camcorder.

Connect the camera to the computer
Turn the camera on
Right click Start (assuming not Windows 8?)
Click Windows Explore
A new window appears, look on the left side scrolling down if necessary for the camcorder to be listed
If so click on it and the contents will appear in the right pane.
If there are folders rather than files in right pane go back to left pane and click the small arrow (or triangle) beside the camera to drop the sub folders down underneath
Click any of these to see contents in right pane.

Snidely- I did that last night and it downloaded my pictures (that I took with the camcorder) and the videos as well. I can't open the files though.

Zep- I went to the DXG's website but there's no driver for my camcorder; I chose the closest one- of course it didn't work. I'll call them tomorrow.

Owbist- I'm using 2007; I did as you suggested and nothing would come up. I've always used Windows Explorer for other stuff but somehow, this doesn't work.
Thanks again for all the help I've gotten. Great people here.

What file format is used for the video file, what kind of file is it (what are the three or four letters to the right of the ".")?

You probably have no file/program association set and you may need a program to open these files. No worries, answer the question and a solution should be possible (unless the file type is proprietary and program to run it isn't available for download). Associating a file type with a program is a 10 second operation.
