Wireless Printer

I'm in the process of buying a printer. I want a wireless printer. Someone told me that you must have a wireless connection to the internet to be able to use a wireless printer? I do not have wireless I hook to the internet with Cable Time Warner. Can I buy and use a wireless printer if I use a cable internet connection?

Do you have a wireless network in your house or don't you? That means having a modem which connects to a computer with a wire AND a router which creates a wireless network which allows other computers/devices to connect to your network and then to the Internet without a wire. If you have a wireless network in your home it makes sense to have a wireless printer. If you don't have a wireless network in your home then a wireless printer won't do you much good.

I disagree with Zep, there's no reason you couldn't use a wireless LAN to communicate with the printer but setting it up might not be easy. What is the manufacturer and model number of the printer? How many computers need to share this printer? What operating system does each have installed? Do each of these computer(s) have a wireless network adapter or have a wired network adapter? If the later, can the router be place in close enough proximity to the computer(s) to run a cable between the router and computer(s)? What manufacturer and model number of router? Usually that information is on a tag on the bottom. If you have multiple computers and a dial-up connection I'm guessing you take turns connecting to the Internet? I mention this because it is possible to share a dial-up connection. Obviously speeds are pretty slow but it's better than waiting.

Thanks for your help, pkponder. I installed the software on my laptop, and everything is up and running. This morning when I turned on my laptop, though, I got a message telling me that Windows Firewall had blocked the printer monitor that I installed. Of course, I read the dire results of allowing an exception... and I'm afraid to allow it, to be honest. I guess I have to, though, in order to use the printer? I used the printer fine (from my laptop) last night, after installing the software, so the Firewall blocking this morning surprised me.

Thank you so much for the input, but I finally gave up fighting this thing every time there's a power interruption and bought a USB cable...hooked it up...and I'm good to go. No more stressing out...and running to the other end of the house just to print something! The other computer is really slow and takes forever and a year to fire up to use it's wired printer. Thanks anyway. I really do appreciate so many suggestions! ~Sandy~

Do you have just one computer connected to the internet? If so, why would you want a wireless printer? If you have more than one computer you must have a router. Is the second computer connected to the router with a cable? If it's not connected with a cable you must have a wireless router. I have a wireless printer that's connected to my router with a cat 5 cable. Brother told me that it's a more stable connection that way and the printer is only about 3 feet from the router so I connected with a cable and can print from my laptop in a different room.

If you don't have a wireless network inside you're home, there's no point in having a wireless printer. If you have multiple computers connected via a wired LAN, then get a printer with a wired network connection or share it via whatever computer you connect it to.

Could use a usb wifi adapter on the computer and talk to the printer wirelessly in adhoc mode.
