Battery vs wall outlet

I have an HP laptop about 4 yrs. old. Lately I've been getting messages saying "battery power is low, change to wall outlet to avoid losing what you are working on" (something like that). The issue is I rarely use the computer on battery. I keep it plugged into the wall all the time. When I do use it on battery power it only lasts less than an hour. Someone suggested I destroyed the battery by keeping the computer plugged into the wall outlet. ...now it cannot hold a charge for more than that. Sometimes the computer will turn off completely by itself when I leave it for some time. I rarely turn off the computer at the end of the day. It is constantly on.

Also I find that when booting up it is very slow (that is why I keep it on) but even loading web pages seems to take forever.

so the question is...should I buy a new battery and switch from wall power to battery power more often? What else could be the problem? Any suggestions?

Oh I do delete temp files and history routinely.
