internet security pick?

Am on an old machine running Windows XP which I understand is about to be retired so, alleeoops! time for a new machine! Planning to get a fairly basic low-end desktop PC (with Windows 7) which Im sure will feel like a Porsche to me, heh, compared to this poor old clunker.

So Im considering changing up my internet security software. Have had Norton and I kinda hate it b/c it seems to really bog things down with a lot of mysterious automated tasks, some of which I dont even know how to tell it to just knock it off! I prefer to do some things myself manually. No doubt a new better machine wont get bogged down so bad but still...

There are so many alternatives out there I have no idea what to choose, other than the obvious Norton or McAffee. Any thoughts on Kaspersky or that webroot one or any others? I dont own any other devices (not even a cell phone!) so I really just need sweet and simple. And low budget!

Im kinda leaning towards the Kaspersky at the moment.

If you want free...AVAST

Willing to consider paid...ESET or Kaspersky

I will never use McAfee again...but that's just me.

This is a reoccurring question without a definite answer. It's the same as asking, "What is the best pizza?" Many opinions and no finite answer.

In a free version a typical user cannot go wrong with the mainstays of Avast, Avira, or AVG. There are supporters of MSE, but reports have shown it lagging behind the 3 As.

Remember, since they are free, and dedicated removal tools are available making removal easy no decision is permanent.

Except for one year of Norton on a W98 system many years ago I haven't tried any commercial offerings. However, from my readings if I was going to I would consider Kaspersky also.

Thank you both for your replies to my problem. At the present time I am not that confident with my computer skills, to use the fix that you graciously supplied Owbist and will hold on to your linked information for now. I did post the problem into the LanzDownForum, as suggested by Ravencajun, along with the requested logs, Etc. As I stated before my computer skills are not great and because of my nervousness about screwing things up worse than they already are, I may have to call in an "expert" to assist me with all of this. I do however appreciate both of you taking the time to help me out with this problem and the advice that you kindly give. Onward and upward!

I use the Norton Internet Security Suite. I like the firewall and the Antivirus seems to work well. The AntiSpam feature never worked. They said it's because I used AdAware and Spybot. They said they are not compatible, therefore, I must get rid of them. I refused (I am very happy with them). As a result, I will not renew this subscription when it expires. I will probably use MS One Care as I have it on my older machine and it seems to do a good job and it's cheaper. Jane

I have been thinking a little more about this. As many know I live in rural America and still have to connect with an antique DUN. Because of this connection I have every application configured "not" to automatically update or check for updates. This protocol allows me to use the maximum connectiion speed available for my focused tasking. Of course, the down side is I have to do updates manually. Since the last AVG upgrade to the current version I have found that it will regularly update on its own while I am surfing even though its configured not to. I wonder if AVG is pinging home causing it to update. If I am correct this could be the answer to your concern. DA

My XP laptop used microsofts OneCare for two years and it was by far the most simple no brainer Firewall, Anti-Virus, active spyware. It's a $50 annual subscription or online can be found for about half that. I fiddled with the bunch of freewares and probably installed/uninstalled or tried all of the more popular ones. Myself and the xp laptop are now believers in simple fully functional stuff... that you dont have to fiddle with; AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender anti-spyware & maybe not for everybody, the old Sygate Personal Firewall. Which you have to search for probably at download.com . It was bought by one of the biggies but the old freeware version is still popular and quite a decent firewall.

The best Free one is AVG2014 bar none recommended by most techs. Do not pay for something you can get better for FREE

If you buy a computer with windows 8, you wont need a security program other than the default Windows Defender.
The newest browser and windows 8l is very much more secure than winxp or win7. Win 8 is already over a year old.. why buy a new computer with an old win 7 operating system ?

Intel owns and is discontinuing McAfee pretty soon.. they have announced its retirement.

Intel isn't discontinuing McAfee products, it's merely renaming the brand Intel Security. This security product line is a robust business that will continue and be enhanced as always. John McAfee (who left the company ages and ages and ages ago) is a lunatic - the association of his name with the products is a definite minus that Intel is correcting.

Microsoft recommends PC users use third party security software, not its own (which is ranked at or near the bottom in most testing).

Someone needs to read more carefully.

Maybe read the whole article rather than just the mindset gossip of one employee who was probably chastised. You made it clear in the past you are a genuine Norton Fan.

Update - 12 October Microsoft has issued the following statement in response to the publication of this article:

"We are committed to protecting our customers, and our Microsoft antimalware solutions provide strong, comprehensive defence against malicious code and attacks. We believe in these products and are proud of the protection capabilities we provide to well over 150 million computers worldwide."

If you select Kaspersky, make sure it can be deleted if/whenever you wish to do so. I tried it and had many promises that it can be removed by downloading this or that. I had to pick it apart a piece at a time because it was protected. If you expect that it will prevent adware/spyware,-- it will not.

I agree with fruitjarfla re Kaspersky. I've had it for years and had no problems. Then just this month I had a problem with a bad virus. I repeatedly asked for help from Kaspersky but got only a prerecorded email over and over. I had to end up buying a new computer. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND KASPERSKY!!!!

Free AVAST. Using it for many years on multiple computers. Never got viruses.
