canon printer

canon pixma mp500. blinking cartridge light means it is low or empty. i have 2 black inks. a 5 and 8. i got a new 5 but it will not print text. must be a clogged print head? has not been used for 2yrs so i would say yes?

Long unused inkjet printers (such as you describe) tend to not work, I think the cartridges dry out. I can't say whether it work with new cartridges or not, I personally stopped using inkjets a long time ago.

I have used Canons for many years. I would think the print head was clogged too but I have noticed that cartridges can fail too. I believe you said you had a new pigment black however so it is probably the head. There is a nice site that gives advise on repairing printers and a large section covers Canons.

I sometimes had good luck by removing the inks, removing the print head and simply running water over the print head from both the ink and paper sides until no more inks come out. I let it completely dry before reinstallation.

I assume that you remember about the print head cleaning routine in the maintainance tab and the following diagnosis from printing the colors and black grid? If not look it up. However, two years sitting dry might not be the best time to try the head cleaning routine.

I have iPhoto. From what I have found (and been able to understand on the internet), computer screens only have 72 dpi and so that is what Mac sends photos in. If this is the case, how do professional photographers send photos over the internet? And that to get a good quality print, you need to print at 300 to 600 dpi. But my printing program does not ask for dpi. It only asks for size of print and even then won't print that size. For instance, when I put in that I want a 5 x 7 print, it will print 4 x 7 and cut off a head in the picture as well! I have the Canon MX870 series printer. And the manual is talking about PNG files, and I don't know what that is. I thought my camera only worked with jpeg or RAW files. I have learned that working in RAW files won't degrade the image on storing it like jpeg files do, but I would need to get new software. And this book I have says the jpeg files should be good enough for ordinary pics. And the manual is also talking about the camera needing to be a Pictbridge compatible device and I have no idea if the Canon 480 D is. This is getting way too complicated for me. I wish I had brought my little Pentax with regular film on vacation with me. People on another forum are advising me to upload pics to a Walgreen site and have them print them. But if the Mac only sends pics at 72 dpi, what good does that do?

I've had this happen. Nuff to make a feller say durn. Cancelling several lined up print jobs isn't necessarily all that simple. The comp seems to grab on and not let go. Anyway try this; Controll Panel > Printers and Faxs The first column should have a list of names like your printer and maybe the Microsoft Doc Writer and will show the number of docs ready to print. If it is not zero you have to make it zero. Double click your printer and it will cough up a window where you can delete all your print jobs. As I recall when you do this it takes it own sweet time to go to completion. Couple minutes maybe. BTW all this is spelled out in the MS help menu under printing > Cancelling Printing of a Document. At least in my XP.

I have two suggested approaches, with no guarantee either would work. In order of preference: 1) plug the printer into the netbook. See if Windows on its own with the plug and play capability handles a driver download and install 2) Failing that, change the settings so that the printer is treated as a "network printer" and then try to add it as the default printer for the netbook. Absent that, you can share folders between the two PCs and when there's something on the netbook you want to print, save it to a folder on the desktop or on the laptop that the desktop is permitted access to and print from the desktop. There may be other approaches too.

My scratchpad - bolded measurements are the size of shelf/cubbyhole/drawer starting off at the bottom super rough outline of a cabinet on wheels still sketching. top of cabinet router 18 or 16 Wx22D 10" high - one shelf cubby - with doors External portable @7 or 5 = 6.5HX 5DX3W - these can be turned into a stacked block - using reusable double-sided sticky tape that I used for the external DVDs. flushed print head with hot water. no text. got fresh generic black 8 cartridge. still no text. and the cartridge light would not glow. went back to store and got a refilled canon cartridge. the light is now glowing. but still no text. i flushed print head again. and now it works. maybe 2 sessions of flushing did the trick.

Glad to hear that something worked. FYI, the black 8 cart almost certainly had nothing to do with anything except allowing the printer to work. The ink for text is the large pigment 5 cartridge.

I think all the cartridge lights were blinking initially. I got all new cartridges and all the lights are steady. I assume blinking means something is wrong. Is it low? Or empty?

Slow blink means nearly empty (time to reorder or whatever). Fast blink means essentially empty. Usually a fast blink will shut down printing after a little more use and will give an alert message that cartridge must be changed.
