need new power suppy

I needed a new power supply for my Dell Studio Slim 540s so I bought one off of ebay.

Dell Studio Slim 540s Replace Power Supply that came looked good but 2 of the connectors (see photo) did not mach up to my mother broad. That 2 connectors where 4 pins but my mine are I think are 8 or 9 .

I don't know a lot about computers but I have done this before on another PC a few years back and all was good. Or I just got lucky.

So can anyone tell that those 2 connectors are called so I can hunt a power supply down that would work.
From the seller of the Replace Power Supply said in the ad that it has
20+4 Pin Motherboard, 4-Pin CPU, 2x Molex, Floppy, 2x SATA

Not knowing what all that meant I thought it would work. Not so.
Any help would be a good thing.

I think you've probably summarized your predicament accurately.

I'd say your best choices are to take it to a shop or buy another one.

Something that has me scratching my head, is that I've owned something north of a dozen PCs over the years, I've never had a power supply go out. I know does happens occasionally, but not with great frequency. It's happened twice to you? Or has it?

Dell and most, if not all, of the other major computer manufacturers use proprietary power supply connectors. To make matters worse, they vary from model to model.

There should be a Dell part number on your original power supply or you can look up the part number on Dell's site. Then just find a matching one. Dell may have them but I suspect it would be expensive. There are also pulls from used machines.

There are probably several reasons. Surges are one. Increased electronic complexity is another -- increasing the number of parts increases the probability of failure. ROHS is a third. The European Greens have managed to ban lead solder from European manufactured or sold electronics and US industries wanting to sell to Europe have to comply. "If it's copper, that can be solder-sealed and not worried about." That depends on what type of fitting was used to tap into the larger supply line. If it is a 'saddle valve' that clamps to the copper line and then punches a hole for water it WILL eventually start to leak. Water, steel, and copper are NOT a good combination. Galvanic corrosion eventually starts. Even if you close a saddle valve it may not actually seal, and corrosion can continue. The damaged section of copper water pipe need to be cut out and a coupling installed. A saddle valve and plastic tubing is even worse.

Hey All - Holy cow! Sorry... I'm not usually so dismissive - in fact I'm surprised I "ignored" everyone's comments as it appeared I did (although I did read and appreciate them, honestly - I just must have gotten distracted and either fallen asleep at my laptop which is sadly common (Queen of TMI) or else run off in a hurry! Easy to do with 3 kids underfoot. It probably sounds like I'm just making excuses...). What I failed to mention is that I'm in freak-out mode over here with yes leaking pipes, and this is in fact a coincidence. Our bathroom's above our dining room (well sits above part of the kitchen and part of the dining room) and the beautiful old unpainted wood above the swinging dining room door (leading to kitchen) is dripping onto the floor slowly. It's causing the wood above the door to expand and now the door won't close without rubbing. I'm worried about the beautiful wood and the moisture underneath (don't want rotting). I wouldn't be as concerned if it were painted - though would still be concerned of course. So I've seen 4 plumbers and the most reputable of them have said - after examining closely (we even have a big hole in our bathroom floor from previous owner leaving it that way after a plumbing repair, so that's helped them see more - including the fact that that ring under the toilet is dry) - that it's time to replace it all. There's some question as to whether the drain pipes are necessary and a lot of testing has been done by them to evaluate what's going on. But because our tub and sink drain so terribly anyway and things look shoddy (lots of evidence of past repairs), we've been advised to put new stuff in. They can also start with the supply lines and see what they see when the get up in the walls to do that and possibly just do that. What's funny is that I asked him to do your flushing thing Bus Driver and he went up there to do a few things including that - and I heard the toilet flush even - but now I can't remember what he said (blush)! I get way spacey when I feel overwhelmed... I apologize for acting so ungrateful and inconsiderate. Damn. The cost of plumbing alone (various bids and options depending on what we want to do) isn't as bad as I thought it was - not that it's going to be easy - but the demo and patching is where I have no idea what to expect price-wise (am waiting to hear back from people - just left messages). And if we rip out our lovely old floors :( it'll cost a fortune. Hoping to just find close-enough matching hexagonal tile and patch in...but I digress. In situations similar to this, I have the contractor frame up a portion of the wall that the service is going to go on (say the garage). I then install the permanent meter base, and run into a 200 amp disconnect (for a standard house). From the disconnect I have a small rain tight panel I have rigged up with some outlets for construction. The power company can then do the permanent service install, energize it, and everyone has power for construction. When I come back to wire the house I take out the rain tight panel and install the permanent panel wherever the home owner wants usually. Since I have the disconnect in place, I can run to a convenient where they want it and treat the "main" panel as a sub panel. Done it many many times and it works out great. Other times, if the transformer (pad mount) is close to the project, I have several temporary's made up that have a meter main mounted to a rail road tie, with some outlets on it. Power company will land the wires in their transformer, pop in a meter and that's what everyone uses for construction until the building is up and I install the permanent service. I don't know the name of that particular connector, but googling for "dell power supply adapter proprietary" turns up all kinds of hits for adapters for sale.
I think if you hunt around for a while you'll figure it out and find the right adapter - perhaps just based on pin counts and what's available.
Most likely that route will be a lot cheaper than buying a Dell branded PS.

And btw, I've had a fair amount of power supplies go out - even supposedly high quality ones - so it does happen.
It's made me think they'll eventually bake themselves into oblivion at some point - one of the least reliable parts in a PC because of all the heat involved.

It's a little hard to tell from the photo what's going on, as they're both a bit out of focus, and the green one is already plugged in.

But, since you have a list of what's coming out of the power supply (PSU), what fit correctly and what's left over.
That should help figure out what the power connectors are by process of elimination.

For the pins on the motherboard, usually you can go to Dell's site, type in the service tag # and find a service manual.
In that will be a map of the motherboard.

If you have a hard time with that, what's the service tag # so we can look it up.

As best as I can tell one is 23 front audio connector
(F_AUDIO)
and the other is 18 front USB connector (F_USB3)
Do you think that is right?

Yes, that looks right to me.
They're just the connections from the motherboard to the connectors on the front of the computer - so you can have a front USB jack and audio jacks.

They shouldn't involve the power supply though.

What jacks were mismatched with the power supply ?

It looks like you only need :
#9 main power connector (ATX POWER)
#35 power for processor (ATX_CPU)

Then there should be some Power Supply (PSU) connectors for various devices, like hard drives, cd players, etc.

The photo is from the power supply that is not working. So it is not some thing mismatched.

What I mean is, what is not matching up with the the power supply you bought - basically what is the problem you're having in getting the right power supply to attach correctly.

If it's just that you have extra PSU connectors that don't seem to fit anywhere - that's quite common. Often extra ones are included so it they'll fit more computers.
Most likely you will have both extra PSU connectors, and as well, unused motherboard connectors that were never connected to anything.

So make sure you're actually plugging connectors from the PSU to connectors on the motherboard - that are actually expecting PSU power.

If you plug something in, just because the connector fits, you could wreck your motherboard - a particular mobo connector might not have anything to do with the power supply, as is the case so far with the USB and audio pin terminals.

The easiest way is just to see what's connected with the old broken PSU, and connect the new one up the same way.
